Morning Jeff. I've checked out most of this "Seastones"-era of Lagin and Dead friends, somehow missed this particular show tho'. Funny how many 'heads *hated* the "Phil and Ned" segments in '74...
Avatar 5:06am
Jeff Conklin:

Yeah, this show doesnt seem to circulate much. I bet the weekend warriors HATED the 74 jams!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11am
the Canterbury wood-elf:

Weirdly conservative for a bunch of acidheads, i must say. The visceral hatred of Donna Godchaux is also quite troubling (ok, she got a bit carried away at times, but it's not as if the others could sing particularly great harmonies).
Avatar 5:13am
Jeff Conklin:

She was very often more terrible than everybody else.

Mark:

I know, Canterbury, but the other off-key singers were playing other instruments, and that's where the action was. If you're in a band strictly as a singer, you'd better be able to sing. She was pitchy a lot of the time. One could make the case that the real reason she was in the band because she was married to Keith.

Jeff Conklin:

I met her once and she was less than kind and that's all I'll say about that....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:18am
the Canterbury wood-elf:

Don't want to start a raging Donna debate here, but by '78 her harmonies were gorgeous to my ears, and it's been suggested that monitoring may have had a lot to do with the earlier pitchiness. Everyone's entitled to a Donna opinion, of course, but some of the hatred i've seen online seems to be more rooted in misogyny than pitch-related concerns.

I don't hate, I just tune out. Her maternity leave was the best!

"A Sailor's Life" - I recognised this from the first 1/4 second! One of the pinnacles in the history of recorded music!

(i think we can all agree about Sandy Denny's vocals)

What an amazing performance by Sandy.

the Canterbury wood-elf:

Thanks so much for this JC. i'm even loving the vinyl crackles. The convergence of Sandy D and Richard T's extraordinary talents for a brief window of time is enough to convince me that there's more to this reality thing than just subatomic particles and four fundamental forces.

My Favorite FC jam without question

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:47am

@JC "She Moved Through the Fair" comes close (did you notice the Brosselmachine lifting of that melody earlier?). And pre-Sandy, there's a mindblowing "Reno, Nevada" (that Richard Farina song) from French TV in '68, Richard T looking about 12 years old - check it out if you haven't already www.youtube.com...
