Only problem today same as every day: not enough time! Too many Derek Baileys. Hope we get the funk!

A tribute to and a schoolin' in the improvisation of Sr. Bailey et al. Wild, wacky and wonderful. Hiya, KG, and sundry miniatures.

Definitely a challenging musician; have heard some of him before, on WFMU and elsewhere, but don't know much.
Avatar 3:52pm
steve:

this is most excellent. 1971, wow!
Avatar 3:53pm
TDK60:

Yeah Steve, 1971. Is that a wah-wah? Or other? Either way, it sounds fresh still.
Avatar 3:54pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

i'd guess a phlanger, if they were even around back then.
Avatar 3:54pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

flanger? i've always thought it was a 'ph.' huh.
Avatar 3:55pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

les paul used a flanger in the 1950s

VCS3-- probably no guitar to be found on this track.

i bet there was a guitar plugged in! maybe not strummed but plugged.
Avatar 3:58pm
steve:

VCS3 has audio in, it can be used as a giant guitar pedal what with the filters and LFOs
Avatar 4:00pm
steve:

VCS3 has one of the best filter sounds ever (used in Pink Floyd's On The Run), guess its not surprising that piece so specifically ear tickling
  4:02pm
DG:

Yeah-- not able to distinguish from env follower guitar input or built in oscillators on these laptop speakers. Either way, makes me wish there would have been a Thomas Lehn/Derek Bailey session!
  4:07pm
JakeGould:

Hey there!
  4:07pm
DG:

Everyone should seek out the DB interview with Henry Kaiser on the OtherMinds archive.org page after this btw! Fun to hear him kind of just mucking around gentlemanly.
Avatar 4:08pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

thanks, dg
Avatar 4:12pm
TDK60:

Some guitar pedals were around in '71, wah-wahs, fuzz pedals. But I thought flangers weren't available to the general public til late in the '70s. Maybe I'm wrong? But, Les Paul used a flanger in the Fifties?! Must have been a special device, eh?
  4:16pm
tino:

Les Paul was using vari-speed tape machines for his flange..
Avatar 4:18pm
Cheri Pi:

Thanks for the Bailey KG! Perfect for today, I have a DB postcard signed by Brian Turner on my fridge.
Avatar 4:18pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

right - i meant to say a flange effect, not a flange pedal. thanks, tino.
Avatar 4:19pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

thanks for tuning in, cheri! i was wondering if you'd be around so i could wish you a HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
Avatar 4:20pm

Damn, I just had to go run an errand and miss almost half of the Derek Bailey special. I had a 7" version of Bailey/Gaines piece. I traded to a friend for a Bailey cd and just forgot to get back.
  4:26pm
Brendan:

In retrospect i can hear DB s influence in Beefheart
Avatar 4:26pm
northguineahills:

...or was it another dancer...?
Avatar 4:27pm
Cecile:

I hear a lot of Bailey in Nels Cline.
Avatar 4:27pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

the only other dancer i know of db working with was min tanaka, tho there were probably others.
Avatar 4:28pm
Cecile:

I don't know if Beefheart would have heard Bailey. Weren't those Incus recordings in small quantities in those days, and barely imported?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm

good call about the nels cline, cecile! thinkin' the same.
Avatar 4:30pm

and of course Eugene Chadbourne!
Avatar 4:31pm

I had a dream about Chadbourne the other night...weird.
Avatar 4:33pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

incus lps were mail order and people were certainly getting them here. in fact, oddly enough, we're gonna hear eugene chadbourne talking about just that in about a half hour.

I found and old Incus LP from the 70s at an indie record store in Tallahassee, FL, for about $10 in 1999. I don't think they new what they had. Oh, life before discogs.....

Didn't Derek Bailey do a Company week at Tonic before he died? I'm not sure if I'm conflating one of those shows w/ other times I saw him.
Avatar 4:47pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

oh yeah, more than once.

I once saw Eugene Chadbourne play an electric rake!
Avatar 4:51pm

the electric birdcage was another fave.
Avatar 4:52pm

I saw the rake, too!

And the guitarist for their opening band played slide guitar with a bust of Jackie Kennedy.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:01pm

maybe this has been covered but were there many/any Bailey / Sonny Sharrock collabs? i googled and found one all star improv group cd featuring both.
Avatar 5:05pm

wait, he just said Sonny Sharrock. what
Avatar 5:08pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

i'm no familiar with a db/ss collab but there were so many improv meetings it surely happened
Avatar 5:12pm

Avatar 5:18pm

Kurt, do you have any Steve Lacy with Derek Bailey? I do like the record they did together.
  5:19pm
Dean:

I wish those guys would quit talking so I can hear the guitars. Or, no, I wish those guitarists would quit futzing so I can hear the discussion. Or, no...or something.

  5:21pm
Dean:

Once I had lunch at an Indian restaurant in Cerritos, site of a large Southern California Indian community. I mentioned to the server that the music they were piping in sounded a lot like some of Kavi's discography. He told me that it was the new, yet unreleased record (at the time), given to them by Kavi the day before when he'd dropped in for lunch!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23pm

Oh man I'm in heaven. Bailey is certainly a personal hero for me as well.
