I've always liked this Disposable Heroes song even though I disagree w/a lot of it. Also, I saw them live opening for U2 in 1992 or so, in a stadium. They were OK.

how about "I fought the law" by the Clash. is "F--K the Police" too obvious?

ike i find it hard to believe you were at a u2 show. did you genuflect?

Hello there fellow rainy NYers!

Seeing U2 in 1992 is acceptable. That’s the cusp of them being what they be now.

olá Rich Hazelton and dirigibles.

...As many times as i've listened to this at home, i'm glad to hear it now. (not at home)

One of the best albums of all time.

Rich, did you hear about this “Do The Right Thing” script reading? Was just reading it she your show started. Timing. www.vulture.com...

is seeing u2 in 1983 acceptable? (or am i not as cool as my mom tells me i am?)
  12:26am
rich:

it's all acceptable coelcanth just that ike is someone who i have talked with about music before and u2 surprised me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28am
Ike:

Hey, I was still in high school then. I had just escaped the influence of top-40 music a year or two before that. I went w/friends. That said, U2 was great at that show.
  12:31am
JakeGould:

I believe that U2 in their “Unforgettable Fire” and “Joshua Tree” phase was fine. Then “Achtung Baby” came out and that was… It was bearable… Then “Zooropa” came out and that’s when I remember making a decision: Screw U2. Screw Bono for going down that dippy fork in the road.

i was just referring to the widespread disgust for u2 in general, which i don't understand.
Sure they're boring; and maybe bono is egocentric,i don't know- but surely not more than many famous people.

Yes. What Martha said. Grooving around the kitchen. Washing dishes is a Friday night (or Saturday morning) ritual around here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39am
coelacanth:

...i think zooropa was their best album since war. Achtung baby & unforgettable fire were pretty good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40am
Ike:

At the time, I loved "Achtung." Not sure what I'd think about it now. At the time, it fit in well w/other WHFS stuff (yr standard alt rock; hadn't heard anything like FMU yet). Maybe I have a weakness for that kind of anthemic bombastic stuff, since I like Arcade Fire (who are great live) much to the disgust of some commenters around here. Heh.
  12:41am
JakeGould:

Coelacanth, to me he transitioned from being a mildly egotistical indie star in U2’s formative years to an insufferable wad beginning in the early 1990s. “Achtung Baby” was tolerably different, but that is right when they started to really become more of an arena rock band. And now their connection with Apple—like who cares if Apple gives anyone a “free” U2 album—is just another part of the problem.

I think it's great Bono helps to alleviate aids in Africa. If you're going to do some notable unprecedented promotion - involving ending up on people's devices uninvited like a virus - my advise is have a notably remarkable album to do it w/. Also - there was a fine line between being an alternative to Rawk's typical Nietszchean nihilism w/ some fresh Kierkegardian faith - & being self-righteous pompous boors...

@Ike: I used to love WHFS back in the day. Then I moved away from B'more, and was in a wasteland of bad radio... Then I stumbled across WFMS when I was on a road trip in NJ.

Jake, I don't disbelieve that. A lot of people accuse him of being out of control in the self-exalting dept. I'm not up on commercial pop culture enough to say...But he couldn't be worse than the majority of pop stars. ...And i do believe he cares, which is more than most. I hate apple/itunes,so fuck them for that! -But a lot of people would be as bad if they could be,no?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01am
Ike:

Heh, "adult alternative." (Or "strollercore" as BT put it.) That used to mean folk and poppy stuff like XTC & R.E.M. & even Robyn Hitchcock. Now folk is mostly banished and they edge further and further into indie, even playing some loud guitars, to attract a younger audience, probably on the advice of consultants.
Avatar 1:06am
Eyepatch Fox (AKA Mister Vixen):

I've got this on CD somewhere. I've not listened to this in AGES! Thanks!
  1:07am
JakeGould:

FWIW, R.E.M. made a similar, “Screw it, we’re rock stars…” thing in the 1990s that alienated me as well. Still like that jangly 1980s and somewhat early 1990s indie stuff.

"pop":short for "popular music"; "new wave"...of what?;"alternative"...alternative to what?-everything that's not alternative?...If not for people with no musical talent (record companies;publishers;managers-etc) we wouldn't be trying to catagorise everything.

I listen to the Big Finish Audio productions (Doctor Who and so on), and they are beautifully produced.

Has anyone else had trouble trying to get into Welcome to Night Vale? It might be clever, but it doesn't SOUND good. I can't get into it.
  1:37am
JakeGould:

I am not 100% familiar with “Big Finish Audio” stuff, but audio production and voice actor choice means a lot to me when getting audio programs. I feel the classic radio shows always—and I mean always—got it right. Because radio production was in such high gear there was no room for nonsense. But a lot of audiobooks and even podcasts nowadays grate on me when it just sounds like some puffed up local theater troupe actor or someone else who should not have gotten a gig. This sounds greta. SO THANK YOU RICH TYPING IN UPPERCASE TO MAKE SURE THAT MESSAGE COMES THROUGH!
