I can see that Kate's music is too English for most US tastes
Avatar 🦇 4:13am

what makes it English?

Climate, history, understatement, the particular beauty of the English countryside, small scale, detail, spaces between things .. maybe
Avatar 🦇 4:16am
Julie:

not sure I've picked up on climate in that much of Kate's work
Avatar 4:17am

The good thing about Kate's music is that it completely distorts my view of time. Like now, the show's been on for an hour & 15 minutes, but I feel like I've been floating along with the songs for hours and hours

Okay, Julie's Kate Bush impersonation is now one of my all-time great WFMU moments.
Avatar 4:35am

re. climate, Kate must have spent many a rainy Sunday afternoon indoors at the piano as a child. Rain does mould the British personality I think.
Avatar 🦇 4:35am
Julie:

I think that was probably Zohra. I did do one but I think I cut it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36am

@fred: a major undertaking! Joyce is famously quoted re: the book's depth and insistent obscurity:"It took me nineteen years to write, it should take 19 years to read."

"Ulysses" is fine. "Finnegan's Wake" on the other hand? Oy.

I was going to write this while you were discussing it on air, but I actually think that "Running Up That Hill" is a very catchy, poppy song in many ways, so I'm not surprised it was such a big hit.

Possibly doesn't make very much sense if you've never watched Alan Partridge (Steve Coogan's greatest creation), but as a big fan of both Alan and Kate, it's something I find myself watching a lot even if I'm not sure it treats the material with the respect it deserves ;-)
Avatar 🦇 4:51am
Julie:

Love Coogan but have yet to check it out actually
Avatar 4:53am

Coogan doing a Kate Bush medley for Comic Relief, Noel Fielding doing the "Wuthering Heights" dance for Sports Relief... Kate seems to be the go-to for a lot of great British comedians.
Avatar 4:53am

Did you see AP in the BBC Kate documentary, telling how Kate came up to him afterwards and said "it was nice to hear all those old songs again Alan". Later in the doc he also made a wry face about the line in "Wow" - "We'd give you a part, my love, But you'd have to play the fool".

Morning everyone else! Listeningcat, Caryn!

Caryn: I also like the video; I pointed out the ambiguity whether Kate's character makes it through. We think she does, as the nurse talks to the husband and a look of relief, but the last shot is Kate the performer closing the "fold" of the piano, like closing a coffin lid? Anyway I like that unclear effect!

"Kashka"! THAT is a progressive song - prob the first major Western release to detail a gay Arab couple, and positively!
Avatar 5:37am

Funny packaging the same music in different ways for different cultures, suggests they won't hear the same thing, which of course is true for all of us #deep

Avatar 5:45am
Matt from Springfield:

Thanks Caryn!

Speaking of the "progressiveness" of "Kashka", I'm also reminded of Van Morrison's epic "Madame George" from '68 - very forward thinking to have a deeply sympathetic portrayal of a cross-dressing Irish drug dealer! :)
Avatar 🦇 5:46am
Julie:

I would assume that is Paddy
Avatar 5:46am
listeningcat:

There's definitely a "way in" to music, that's what covers try to offer simplistically I guess. Once through the door, the complexity of the scene opens up for you to explore.

@Matt: And Rod Stewart had his "The Killing of Georgie (part I &II)" in 1976.

@Caryn: You're right - that was another great statement, and great song.

I've learnt a bit of Polish for my trip - is that one of your many familiar languages? It's interesting for being the most like Russian of the West Slavic langs. And a Roman alphabet that was not applied very well to their words! ;)
Avatar 5:52am
Caryn:

@Matt: only a bit. I was friends with a Polish mathematician's daughter in jr high. Occasionally the Polish/Russian closeness confuses me. Like the word "street" is "ulika" in one, "ulitsa" in the other, and I occasionally forget which is which.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:52am

Typically, I avoid cliché like the plague, but I am Bushed big time.
I missed KB the first time around but now have had a glimpse of what I have missed. Thanks, Julie, for a flying overview of an artist for whom I will make much more time. ahead. Much appreciated.

Jak jest twój polski, @Matt?
Avatar 5:53am
Matt from Springfield:

Ha, Sia's choreographer looks like that as well? That look just might be coming back! ;)
Avatar 5:55am
Matt from Springfield:

@Caryn: The good thing about Slavics is many words are the same across all the langs, but our familiar "tr" sound going into "tshe" but still spelled tr is confusing! And I know what you mean about those little diffs. My *guess* would be "ulitsa" Russki and "ulika" Polski, but I could be wrong!

@the Sem: Cool. Hungarian is it's own breed of lang, not familiar with it but would like to be if I visit - many great Central Euro areas to see!

Buda AND Pest, see both of them!
@listeningcat: Ah, you reminded me of that! :)

My grandma was one of the heads of the Finnish-Hungarian Society. She speaks fluent Hungarian. I haven't picked up any of it from her, though. Apart from some food terminology. :(

Kate Bush remixed in live sound collage on WFMU EXACTLY one year earlier:

and in the mix almost exactly two years ago:
