Hi Rob,
Could you play some Cantonese music for our beleaguered friends in Hong Kong? I'm very worried about them.. and I'll be there in about three weeks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:24pm Rob W:

True, guess I'm kinda on the wrong side there. Probably won't have a chance top play anything along those lines today but will try next week!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07pm davex:

Good evening Rob and all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:16pm Rob W:

Good evening davex! And thanks Bas in NL and Dave in MI for your generous pledges to our fall fund drive!

Nice Fela cut! Hi everybody!
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 7:22pm Bas NL:

Just saw Bombino third time round last week; great show again! ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:23pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Fela - never fails.

Bas, I was just in Amsterdam for the first time. Really liked a Surinamese restaurant called Lalla Rookh.
  7:36pm Dave:

Love this classic cumbia sound! (in reference to the Cumbia All Stars song)
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 7:36pm Bas NL:

Hi Ike; you should have! Surinamese cooking is awesome! It was a terrible blow when my favorite close by Surinam takeaway closed some years back.. ;(
Avatar 7:40pm Ĩkє:

Plus, I was surprised to learn that using apostrophes to make things plural is completely legal and acceptable in Dutch. And I really like the trams in Amsterdam. Nice city.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:47pm Rob W:

I love the multi-cultural flavor of Amsterdam (and other Dutch cities) because it's quite different from NY. Didn't know about the apostrophe thing though... how could I not notice that?
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 7:49pm Bas NL:

Nah, not plural; it's the possessive form. (Bas' banter.. ) Amsterdam is awesome and i go there frequently for live music. I think last count was some 152 nationalities living in Amsterdam, close to what can be found in NYC.
Tram, subway, train.. public transport is all really good here ;)
Avatar 7:54pm I k e:

Nah, Bas, I'm talking about actual plurals in Dutch -- I saw them on many signs in Dutch across the city and asked a hotel clerk about it, then looked it up online. Within the rules acc. to both!
www.dutchgrammar.com...
That's more shocking than legal red light windows to me! :) I HATE it when people do that in English -- where it's totally against the rules but widely done anyway.
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 8:01pm Bas NL:

Just bought a ticket for BKO Quintet from Mali for October 31st in Utrecht; don't know them but they were recommended by a couple of people now..
@Ike: It's like the link shows: 'des' as in possessive but indeed there is a use in contractions like in A'dam for Amsterdam.
Avatar 8:08pm íkє:

I'm talking about the bit under "To keep a vowel long when adding -s to a noun" on that page: "If a noun ends in an unstressed vowel, its plural gets -s at the end." So peculiar to my eyes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:11pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Chemirocha = "Jimmie Rodgers" - who the villagers believed must be a spirit because of the other-worldly sound of the yodels on his records

... : ))) ...much as more than a few of us have felt about Robert Johnson & Skip James...
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 8:24pm Bas NL:

@Ike: Ahh, see what you mean! He, he.. actually loads of Dutch have trouble with that as well; it's not a well know rule. (In a way i did not catch what you pointed too ;)
Avatar 8:27pm I k e:

You mean a lot of Dutch have trouble knowing when they SHOULD use the apostrophe to make things plural, or when NOT to use it, or both? I saw the apostrophes used in plurals in Dutch ALL OVER Amsterdam. And a few times in English, which is wrong but sort of forgivable under the circumstances.
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 8:35pm Bas NL:

Technically it's not to generate a plural; that's the 's'. It's just to keep the elongated ending vowels long. In Auto's or autos the 'o' sounds different.
Avatar 8:35pm Ĩkє:

Oh right, good point.
Avatar 8:39pm íkє:

Also I wonder why almost everything tastes better in Europe. Chocolate, cheese, bread, potatoes, radishes... all great. Even some tourist traps. Even Autobahn rest stop food from steam tables! OTOH paying to use a public restroom is completely baffling to us Americans... but there are a lot more of them in some places, so that's good.
  8:41pm Dave:

Would love to hear something from Irka Mateo, Domincan singer, who will be at SOBs this Wed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:43pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...seems to me that European wines have a 'mineral' element (not an implied negative)...
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 8:45pm Bas NL:

Especially the food in southern europe is incredible. Dutch dishes are generally rather bland ;) Payed restrooms are a pain in the.. can't figure out that one either; even at times in places serving drinks.
Avatar 8:47pm Andy:

This playlist is going excellent with our fish tacos. Thanks Rob!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:47pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...I think the obvious answer is that in the U.S. - it's Food Inc. : Quantity over Quality...
Avatar 8:52pm I.K.E. (Ice King Enterprises):

I imagined Dutch food would be bland, but it was pretty darn good at Haesje Claes. Not that I would eat that too often compared to Indonesian or Surinamese though.
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 8:54pm Bas NL:

I just had dinner at a very good Greek restaurant tonight! ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56pm davex:

Lots of apostrophe abuse in Germany as well - not to mention bland food!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:
