anyone ever notice the difference between the FM signal and the App sound quality? My tuner picks up a way fuller sound.. is it because my iphone does not have substantial audio output? or just the nature of digital streaming? is it too late to be asking such questions? ... perhaps.

Sorry, bobdoesthings, I haven't had my antenna hooked up to my hi-fi in a decade, as the signal is inconsistent here in Brooklyn. The stream sounds full.

@northguineahills - all good. whereabouts in BK? I'm in flatbush.. just a tad southeast of the South part of prospect park and my fm signal is fairly clear most nights.. just curious.
  12:34am
rw:

bobdoesthings, I have an ipod dock that sounds considerably better than pulling the signal out of the headphone jack. Also, I'm not an expert, but I suspect a computer with a decent sound card might have better sound quality than the phone.
Avatar 12:39am
northguineahills:

I'm in north Bushwick. I did notice in my friends' cars in the last five years that the signal is stronger, but so as long as I have internet access, I might as well stream.
Avatar 12:40am
bobdoesthings:

@rw - yeah, I'd be curious what my desktop (with decent sound card) plugged into my stereo versus the FM signal from my tuner would be like. I figured the difference is so huge b/c the phone's output is intended for headphone usage and not outputing to a stereo setup. Although.. the phone does get plugged into my stereo which has an pre-amp and amp.. the same my tuner gets plugged through.. so you'd think it'd be a fair compariosn and would be more about the difference between a digital stream and the FM signal.. but I do not know what I'm talking about.. and several beers in... so... there's that.
Avatar 12:45am

a fun thing to do if you have a computer, a smartphone, and a FM radio.. put WFMU on all at once and experience three different delays!!

My house has at least two streams going most of the time. If I miss something in the office I run to the living room to catch it.
Avatar 12:50am
bobdoesthings:

@rw -- I have my fm in the living room and my stream on computer with desktop speaker system in my bedroom.. it's totally cool to go from living room to bedroom because the digital stream is later.. but man.. going back the other way.. sometimes I miss a valuable zinger from Andy Breckman or what have you..

@bobdoesthings, I routinely have multiple streams on, and my phone on w/ WFMU to get the ultimate phase shifting effect.

@p-90 it's true!!
@northguineahills - being disoriented listening to the radio is fun!

"Dogs Hot" is always fun to play with a cat in the room
Avatar 1:12am
northguineahills:

Some of the different streams can be as much as 45 seconds off (especially the pop up) of each other, the phone app can be can far off as well
  1:13am
rw:

P-90, Yeah. Fender Guitars. The Fullerton Museum did a guitar show many years ago. I was peripherally involved and got to see the guitar nerds geek out over a prototype... Strat? They were pulling the thing apart to check out the wiring and such. I think the museum has a small permanent exhibit, but nothing worth going out of your way for. The gift shop may have t-shirts that say Fullerton with that backwards Fender F.
Avatar 1:17am
bobdoesthings:

backwards F in fender reminds me how the "F" in fabulous is a different font from the rest of the word in the "Welcome to Las Vegas" sign.. www.google.com...
Avatar 1:18am
bobdoesthings:

@NGH - yeah I'm amazed that my phone and two different computers each get different amounts of delay.. despite all being the digital stream from the same WI-FI hookup in my place..
  1:20am
P-90:

I didn't know the pop-up delay could be that long. I've noticed going from the phone app to the stream that both the IOS and Android apps have been a as much as 2+ minutes behind...!
Any one have an observation about the sound quality of the MP3 stream vs. Pop-Up? I've been curious, but never bothered trying to A/B them extensively.
  1:23am
P-90:

Wow! That Vegas sign is so iconic. And a perfect snapshot of where design was in 1959. That "F" does look a little funny.
Avatar 1:25am
bobdoesthings:

@p-90 wow 2 mins?! I thought the worst was like 20-30 seconds.. and yeah I had a free lance small job once which referenced the iconic sign and was baffled when trying to match the typefaces.. it looks bizarre the more you look at it.. Kind of like how the "n" in the 7-eleven logo is lower case and the rest is upper... upload.wikimedia.org...
  1:26am
rw:

Holy crap. That lower case n is genius!
Avatar 1:26am
bobdoesthings:

sorry if I blew too many minds with that 7-eleven drop...
Avatar 1:27am
bobdoesthings:

@rw - genius or ... just odd? a capital N would look just as neat..
  1:28am
P-90:

@Bob: it looks "right", though, the designer really knew what he was doing
  1:29am
rw:

I don't know... Subtly subversive. I think it makes the image stick in your mind without your really knowing why.
Avatar 1:30am
bobdoesthings:

yeah. it's funny how subtle good design choices are... like the arrow in the fedex logo, in the negative space between the 'e' and 'ex' (which some people go their whole lives not noticing) - nationalharbor.com...
Avatar 1:31am
bobdoesthings:

*and 'x'
  1:31am
P-90:

Yeah, the change isn't obvious. maybe the "small" n looks kinda friendlier there or something
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31am
Fuzzy:

@P90: The pop-up and 128k stream sound pretty much the same to my ears, though I can tweak the winamp eq to my liking, so there's that advantage. The 2 sources seem pretty well synced up tonight, only a very slight delay effect. Last night on Nick Name's show it was about a quarter second delay -- Nice slow slapback effect.
  1:34am
P-90:

@Fuzzy: that was my impression too, I can't hear any difference between Pop-Up and 128k on iTunes on a Mac desktop. Or the iPad for that matter.
Avatar 1:36am
bobdoesthings:

for anyone curious.. I got about 3.9 seconds between the FM signal and the pop-up on my wifi. haha. not like it matters.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37am
Fuzzy:

Now I can hear the delay while Thomas speaks -- I'm guessing it's around 1/8 second or less.
Avatar 1:41am
bobdoesthings:

All I'm sayin' is... when I hook up my iphone to my AUX input into my stereo.. then switch to my radio tuner component.. both of which go into a pre-amp/amp stereo setup.. the FM signal is wayyy more full sounding.. tons more base and a lot more range.. while the iphone app has a cleaner sound it is far more thin sounding... hollow and thin. as mentioned before.. I bet it has something to do with the iphone's audio-output level being meant for headphones and not having the range/volume that something like a computer has with a soundcard meant to output to possibly a stereo setup..
Avatar 1:41am
bobdoesthings:

*bass (not base.. ugh.. )
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:43am
Fuzzy:

@bob: makes sense: mp3 is a lossy compression algorithm; the FM signal actually IS fuller.

- yeah: if it were an Analog-recorded&mastered piece of Vinyl (rekkid)
...or a Live performance, come to think of it
- & you was listening via 'terrestrial' FM
- that would be Analog all the way.
- Not an option here in NewHampshuh...
- the EQ from a leetle phone - I have no experience w/ - but yes - engineers know people are listening w/ earbuds & Mastering for that - which some regard as a disaster...(early 1960s stuff was sometimes Mastered for leetle transistor radios - w/ truly crummy speaker tech of the time)...
- For me - adjusting EQ manually in iTunes (it remembers them) for the dif. speakers in each dif. room is crucial !...

- Hullo Thomas ! Yer quite excellent & I wish I was generally awake in yer timeslot...
