I never heard of this and did a little googling and found this: A superstition about magpies, as the old rhyme goes One for sorrow, two for joy, three for a girl, 4 for a boy, five for silver, six for gold, seven for a secret never to be told. So if you see one magpie (sorrow) you salute it to get rid of the sorrow.

	11:50am robyn: i had to take a break from online media this past month. i started reading real magazines again. i learned more from one 7 page article in the new yorker about russia than i did from 7 separate sources online. but print holds one's attention better and offers less distractions on top of everything...its not just the online media's fault (though it mostly is)
