Quraishi - Master of the Afghan Rubab

Hear this show now: Pop-up listen Pop-up player! | Add or read comments

Decades of war and cultural repression have taken a huge toll on Afghanistan's once thriving music scene. Many musicians have left the country.

One of the best, Quraishi, lives right here in New York. Quraishi is a master of the traditional Afghan short-necked lute, the rubab. He has a great new CD out on the Evergreene label, Mountain Melodies.

Quraishi is one of several outstanding artists from Persian and Turkic cultures who performed at the annual CTMD Heritage Sunday free concert on Sunday afternoon August 2 at Lincoln Center Out-of-Doors, Hearst Plaza. The concert, Echoes of the Divine: Arts of the Turko-Persian Diaspora, featured Ahmet Erdogdular, Shashmaqam, Quraishi, and The New York Crimean Tatar Ensemble.

On today's show Quarishi performs two instrumentals live on rubab plus two short pieces on the dutar, a long-neck lute he's recently begun playing as well. He's accompanied by Hewad, a fine young tabla player.

Hi Cory, I don't know actually - I will try to remember to ask! I do know it has 3 melody strings and 20 sympathetic strings.
