I've also read that nearly all of that version of "The Maltese Falcon" was verbatim from Hammet's novel, and that the earlier & later films of it were more loosely adapted. The interesting thing everybody notes is that there's never been a movie adapt'n of "Red Harvest" by that name.

We just watched Rip Torn in "Payday" on Sunday. While watching I realized how there is such an immediate recognition of films in that era. Something about the cinematography, dialogue and, of course, always a couple of scenes of bared female breasts.
