Caryn:

That whole head discussion reminded me of how Richard E. Grant once wrote about film stars having unusually big heads. Not as in conceited, but big in size. He theorized that the big head, and consequently big face, lured viewers in and in some cases made emoting easier to put across, thus helping the big-headed achieve star status.

Avatar 12:27pm
Caryn:

@Cecile: well, the lollipop thing is exacerbated by the need to be more and more thin.

But I wonder if the "big head leads to stardom" thing is not so much about a large face luring viewers in, but evolution. Baby animals of pretty much all species have the same characteristics: large head, large eyes, etc. (large head mainly because of how developed the brain needs to be for the young to survive), and it's thought that through evolution, those characteristics have become universally appealing to all animal species to elicit a mothering, protective instinct and thus keep more young from dying. If we have evolved into a species that is instinctively drawn to big heads, it might account for why people with big heads often rise to stardom. People are drawn to them without even understanding why.
Avatar 12:28pm

so, what you're saying is cute overload is evolutionary adaption. :D

Avatar 12:34pm

Hmm, considering how an issue with environmentalism is how people are more willing to donate to protect cute, furry or smiley animals as opposed to insects, fungi, etc., I wonder if some species will learn to adapt quickly enough to try and survive by getting cuter, thus eliciting more protection from humans? (Logically, I doubt it, because I think such trends are not detected by animals, but it would make for an interesting story idea.)

@Mike: I find it interesting that just as "Empire Strikes Back" is the best of the SW movies, its special edition is also the least sucky one. I suppose mainly because the digital additions were mostly adding in background windows and cleaning up dodgy shadows, whereas in the other two there were constant "comedy" aliens pratfalling in the background or dumb CGI bands ruining things.

@Andrew: agreed. Also, I think the choice of Irvin Kershner as director made all the difference. It wasn't until I saw the making of -documentaries that I realised how many little character tics and details he added into the film through his character direction. Like Chewbacca wailing when Han and Luke were left out on the surface of Hoth when the doors were locked.

@tomasz@1:13, there is no list! That's what's so insane! See Coe's link far above -- ALL the FCC says is that you can't be "indecent" 6 a.m.-10 p.m. After 10 you can be "indecent" but not "obscene." But what the fuck does that mean? WHO KNOWS? Carlin was mostly just making that shit up, I think.

I don't think the first hour of Dune is so bad (Lynch's directors cut; characters have no internal monologue and some other changes; and i think it leaves out the introductory scenes). I like it better than SW, although it's a different kind of scifi and I was probably too old when I first saw SW. Of course Lynch's Dune doesn't hold a candle to Alien; Alien got the art team that was slated for Jodorowski's Dune.

Caryn: that's a complex situation, from what I hear. There's that awful extended TV cut on the new DVD of DUNE....but we know what that's like...and I'm not sure the original Lynch 5 hr. cut exists in any form now. Maybe. I hope it turns up and they can restore that and release it at some point. But Universal was not interested in any 5 hr. film.....then or now. That was just one problem with it

@caryn my understanding is some of the footage is actually lost.
Anybody see the Sci Fi channel's Frank Herbert's Dune. I actually own it but have not hunkered down to watch it.
Looking forward to Jodorowsky's Dune.

I still have a soft spot for Dune. I always watch it when it's on tv, it's just entertaining. The new tv series version was just boring and disappointing. I remember the people making it talking about how they wanted to fix some of the problems the Lynch one had, like Kyle MacLachlan being way too old to play a 15-year-old, and then their Paul Atreides looked like a 30-year-old gym buff. WTH!?!

Another alternative version I'd like to see is "Breakfast Club". John Hughes kept the original cut in his safe at home, and didn't want it released, so it probably never will be, but I'm just curious. Apparently a way worse movie, but some of the cut music stuff sounds brilliant, and some of the cut stuff (like an entire subplot including fantasy musical sequences) just sounds interesting, if odd. And I'd like to see some of the behind-the-scenes stuff. I mean, John Cusack narrowly lost the role of Bender. I want to see those audition tapes, if they exist.
Avatar 2:08pm
Caryn:

@Mike East: I appreciated that they tried to convey more of the complex political and religious plotting that are so central to the books, and some of the production design was decent, but otherwise the tv series was... lacking. With all its faults, the Lynch version has an off-kilter charm and I think some genius casting choices.

ha a director's cut Breakfast Club...hadn't heard of that. As for the DUNE miniseries'....didn't like the main one at all...Dune Messiah was ok in spots. I was just getting seriously into Herbert when the movie came along....caught up with his other novels then too. Still a huge fan of the DUNE film but of course it's not great, a mess but a fun mess.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10pm
mariano:

I like Dune, but I'm a big Lynch fan, so I tend to be favorably impressed by what he does. It's such a mess in a lot of ways: like, seriously, Toto for the soundtrack? But it has some real art film elements from some of Lynch's early work. The scene where the guild navigator is folding space is visually very much like some of his early shorts.

I hope the original cut of Dune turns up miraculously, like the original cut of The Wicker Man did. That's a brilliant film. The less said about the Nicolas Cage version, the better. (Although that freakout bee scene is hilarious.)

It's funny Dune came up, because right before, I was reading the wiki for guild navigators. All because I saw a picture of Rush Limbaugh, and couldn't decide if he was more of a Baron Harkonnen or the guild navigator in the tank.

@Caryn and @LD888: Thing is, Rabban was a warrior, and Rush is a draft dodger who probably couldn't fight his way out of a paper bag (and I love Paul Smith, the actor who played Rabban, and wouldn't want to insult him). Rabban would be like that Staten Island congressman who threatened to throw the reporter off the balcony. Except Rabban would have done it, of course.
