Uncle Tupelo Live on The Music Faucet July 29, 1990 (Host: Nichaolas Hill / Brian Redman)

Way back in the summer of 1990 a midwestern trio named Uncle Tupelo played live on Nicholas Hill's Music Faucet program on WFMU. As many know, bandmates Jay Farrar, Mike Heidorn and Jeff Tweedy later split into the bands Son Volt and Wilco. The session predated WFMU's online archives, so on the eve of a new reissue Uncle Tupelo's influential album "No Depression" featuring a couple of these performances, Irene thought it might be time to revisit and air the original session in its entirety.

This is the first Seeger tribute I've heard, on FMU or anywhere. Colbert had a nice performance of Pete doing "If I Had a Hammer," but that was all I managed to see all last week.

Hi Everybody! Hope you're staying warm and snug, and away from teh snow in the NYC area. Yeah, another Pete Seeger Tribute. I'm hoping not to copy the other ones. Later I'm airing a vintage show with Uncle Tupelo from The Music Faucet.

Kat, Dave the Spazz did what I thought was a perfect little one-set tribute last Thursday night, about halfway through the first hour of his show.

Pete certainly could work an audience. Even did so at age 93-4 w/ Colbert's cynical and hip city audience. If he asked you to sing, it's an offer you couldn't refuse.

Yeah kat, Saw him twice on LI in the mid-70s doing a round-robin with Harry Chapin & Steve Goodman. Despite being the "0ld Guy", he certainly held up his end. 0f course, now they're all gone.

Harry Chapin played at my high school in 1975 for a ticket price of ten cents. (It's a hobby of mine to date myself)

Listener Schned:

Anybody recall what time of day The Music Faucet came on back then ? Pretty sure it was a Sunday show...
Avatar 1:24pm
kat330:

@ Fuzzy: Sorry, was away from the list for a bit. Not exactly C&W -- a genre usually not my cup of tea -- but purely Americana. City of New Orleans is such a perfect song, IMO.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm
Irene Trudel:

@Listener Schned, the Music Faucet definitely aired on Sunday evenings. I was thinking it was kind of on the early side--either 6pm or 8pm. It varied over several schedules. I was the engineer for a good many of them but not for Uncle Tupelo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm
Fuzzy:

@kat: Ah, yes -- City of New Orleans is awesome too! I thought you might be referring to "You Never Even Called Me By My Name," another Goodman gem.

@Fuzzy: Since you're a guitar player, did you notice a certain guitar chord sequence + rhythm in Seeger's "Oh Freedom" that was the same as in "Walk Right in / Sit Right Down"?

@risky@1:47, I always thought so too! I didn't want to be first to say it but I could NEVER stand him! I heard a rumor that he had an annoying entourage as well. I was so glad when the Stork Club replaced this, despite this cool Uncle Tupelo set.
