...I've always thot you could hear the 'accent' of a Symphony - or string ensemble in this case - like these folks are Berliners - but a violinist I knew didn't agree, saying Symphonies too often have players from all over in them for such an effect...

I've got one of those here...the neighbors love it haha

There's a proper Clavecin Wikipedia page, but only in French! fr.wikipedia.org...

"during a performance in a dark room the listener's "eyes are agreeably surprised by the brilliant sparks" that were produced by the instrument. The press and the public admired the innovative machine, but it wasn't developed further. The model Delaborde himself built survives and is kept at the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris." Wow, that's pretty radical for 1759! I'd like to see the actual one if I'm in Paris.

LovecraftDude888:

bagpipe practice at 3 am yeahhh.
  8:34pm
P-9Ø:

@Matt: I'd like to see the actual sparks
  8:34pm
LovecraftDude888:

how about that guy Nancarrow? still haven't heard much of his stuff but hear it's pretty wacky
  8:36pm
P-9Ø:

@LCD888: I know that guy, he was like the Zamfir of the player piano
Avatar 8:36pm
Matt from Springfield:

@P-9Ø: I'm sure they won't let you spark *that* machine! ;) But it's probably easy enough to build one--and demonstrate the sparks at a science museum!
Avatar 8:37pm
Bethany Ryker:

Sparks fly! I love it! A completely new scene for me to add to my already curious and overactive imagination about what it was like to be a concert-goer in the 18th century...

Now, the National Cryptologic Museum outside of Fort Meade in MD (the NSA's public museum) is in my Top 5 museums of the world--primarily because it's free AND they let you play with a REAL Enigma machine!

@Matt: if you follow fleep's link you can see the gorgeous carving on the cabinet--soundholes etc

C, C, C, C, C… That’s a lot of C’s! ”Chiffres de Clavecin I. Contrepoints, IV. Colonnes, V. Cadences (1967)”
  8:39pm
LovecraftDude888:

right re: Nancarrow. ha, he split for Mexico after the Spanish Civil War and told the USA to eat him and in 85 they said you can come back if you sign a repentent statement against Communism and he told them to eat his shorts once again heehee!! I love it

Matt from Springfield:

@Bethany: Yes, I just hope it doesn't set the Armonica on fire, that would lead to a tragedy! As well as startled nerves of a Mysterious Nature...
  8:40pm
P-9Ø:

They SAY the one they let you play with is a "real" one. Never believe a spook...
Don't you listen to good ol' Dave Emory?

@Bethany: most common translation is "cyphers"
Avatar 8:41pm

@P-9Ø: And I'm sure he would approve--it's a functional *anti-fascist* machine! He should keep one in his basement for emergencies, along with his Woody Guthrie guitar replica..

If WFMU existed 100 years ago, it'd probably play music similar to this. Music not well known to the mainstream audience.

@Ken HP: I can see that -- DJ Irwin de Chuside, playing all the pop that's fit to rock. Live guests including Debussy, and Stravinsky, just to piss people off!
  8:48pm
P-9Ø:

@Bethany: In modern French-to-English, "chffres" most often refers to "cyphers" or "codes". In this context, it's probably safe to assume it means "files" or more literally, just "scores."

@RRN63: Well P-9Ø did have a reaction...I guess it's pretty true, unless perhaps each conductor creates their own 'accent' regardless of where their performers come from??

Y'now, as "played-out" as it is, there's STILL always room for The Planets. Or a Planet. I never get tired of it/them. You can really hear how HUGEly they influenced the orchestral music that has come since, regrdless of style, even 12-tone and what-have-you
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- yeah Matt - the Conductor - but then the back & forth of Conductor & Players...& the amount of current passing thru the Conductor relative to its' impedance & how well it's grounded - as far as the sparks you get...

The Planets are almost like the Rosetta Stone to the entire Classical-Romantic tradition as it has proceeded since then, right up to John Corigliano, John Williams, everyone named John
