The whole reason why astronauts went to the moon was because public demand wanted them to go to find out for sure the moon was not made of cheese. Popular belief at the time. Imagine harvesting all of that cheese if the moon was really made of cheese. When the astronauts arrived they dug into the moon only to find dirt and rock. No cheese. But yet again they were not on the dark side of the moon.

@Bloopy, Willie Nelson often has that blank look lately. He had it on Bill Maher's show the other night, too. Hmm. I say legalize it, but it's not 100% harmless. Don't totally smoke your brains out!

@Matt - thanks, I guess.

Matt: I was introduced to the CAN comp. CANNIBALISM at about age 11, and went straight for the track AUMGN, and obsessed like a beast over it for months. At that age, or any age, how could one NOT obsess like a beast over it?

@Scott: Haven't seen Ariana's acting, she might be great, but her song material looks pretty scary.

And YES: Taylor Swift feat. Bryan Ferry must happen! And John Cale could even organize 1D's VU tribute concert...

@RTD: Young minds are still in development, there's plenty of masterful classics that I wouldn't have (or even didn't at the time) like around 11-13. It takes many years to find greatness on your own, and then to make the mental connections to other things that are great for the same reasons.

@Matt - Now that I see the pic, I recognize her from what I believe is a spinoff of iCarly, the thought of which makes me ill.

and, no, her acting is terrible...par for nickelodeon. What's the deal with the laugh track after literally every two lines of dialogue?

Alvaro sounded like David Thomas from Pere Ubu for just a second there

When you have the time, google the Turtles' whiteboard review of their career, complete with arrows and circles. It was one of the funnier rock-related stories this side of Spinal Tap.

Oh yeah, and last week...I took the "Frankie Teardrop" Challenge!

That is a masterful classic, but OH GAWD the sing-whisper-SCREAMING!! That track leaves physical effects, even without infrasound!

Mike: Lets the kids know what's supposed to be funny. Don't you remember Get Smart or The Ropers? Same deal

OTOH, those who haven't listened to the whole track should take their first listen under Challenge circumstances, to appreciate the true terror of the production :)

@P90 - I remember those, but I don't remember the laugh track going off nearly as much as on these shows.

Remember the Banana Splits? Really overdone laugh tracks, especially when the material was funny enought o stand on its own. Lance Link: Secret Chimp same deal

Parq:

The flip side of nowadays is that there are some shows -- Parks and Rec comes to mind right off the bat -- that get along with no laugh track or studio audience at all. Kind of gratifying to those of us who remember when Tony Randall and Jack Klugman had to plead with ABC to let them do one episode that way.

"Raising Hope" did a true-to-life parody of a Dis/Nick style "kidcom"--they really did their research on that.

And it's understandable that we need to be told when the lines on these other shows are supposed to be funny, since virtually none of them actually is.

Overall, too much toilet humor on "Hope" for my taste, but yes, they've done some very clever conceptual episodes.

Sadly, @Parq, Parks & Rec (and Community) gets very dismal ratings and has somehow nonetheless survived anyway, perhaps due to demographics or the political power of Lorne Michaels within NBC, or more likely because NBC is pathetic and simply didn't have anything else. Great show, though it suffered severe growing pains. (Y'all should Netflix it, but skip straight to season 2!)
