What sound do you hear when you drop a piano down a shaft? A-flat minor!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 5:35pm Artie:

Never pegged you for a string man, Doug. Those guys are always wound a little tight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39pm Doug Schulkind:

Ladies and gentlemans, we will be this evening's performance with a rendition of the ancient and hallowed Asian folksong: Tu Ning

Avatar 5:49pm Matt from Springfield:

Jimi provided great guitar and voice. But, mostly guitar.

Hey Doug and early Drummers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:50pm Doug Schulkind:

Haha Aurélie! For a moment there I thought you said, "I can't wait for snow!!!!!" Now THAT would be a neat trick.

Welcome Matt! (I know, I use that joke every time.)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:03pm Doug Schulkind:

Sir ndbob, I bow low to you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05pm Doug Schulkind:

Searching Google Images for Nouméa, here is the first photo that popped up: upload.wikimedia.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05pm Doug Schulkind:

Probably a cliché, Aurélie, but still. Nice.
Avatar 6:08pm Matt from Springfield:

Groovy geetarin' - kind of a Shrunken Planet vibe...
Avatar 6:08pm ndbob:

@Aurelie - looking at lotsof images of Noumea now - looks lovely:)
Avatar 6:09pm hyde:

I feel like we might get some Don Bikoff today...(I hope!)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14pm Doug Schulkind:

Good evening northguineahills!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14pm Gary:

Well, this is lovely, too. Just sat down with a quesadilla
Avatar 6:15pm hyde:

if Don Bikoff doesn't make it, people should just go watch this after signoff (Don Bikoff on the Ted Mack Amateur Hour) www.youtube.com...
Avatar 6:16pm Matt from Springfield:

This is a LOVELY soundtrack to watching snow still falling!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:18pm Doug Schulkind:

@Matt from Springfield
Your comment makes me think of the amazing "death in the snowfall" scene at the end of Altman's "McCabe and Mrs. Miller." One of the greatest scenes in cinema history.
  6:19pm Dean:

Trying to remember the name of the picker who played Covina's Fret House in the (guessing: early) '90s following an appearance on KPFK's Folk Scene. He was a Kottke acolyte of sorts. Male, white, youthful at the time. Help?
Avatar 6:20pm Aurélie E:

@Doug I love Robert Altman, The Criterion Collection just released a new edition of Nashville x
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 6:20pm listener james from westwood:

been digging the strumming since the 6 o'clock hour, but just got free to comment now. 'lo, all! hope those coping with snow are home safe or able to use mass transit!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:21pm Doug Schulkind:

Heya Dean and LJFW!
  6:21pm Dean:

@Aurélie E: Your comment reminds me of *another* show, this one at Al's Bar, the downtown LA punk haven. The performer was Ronee Blakeley.
Avatar 6:24pm ndbob:

Actually (relatively) nicer here then in the mid-Atlantic today - less then an inch of snow - just cold - temps in the mid-teens wind chill around zero
Avatar 6:25pm Matt from Springfield:

@Doug: "McCabe and Mrs. Miller"--heard of that, but haven't seen! Oughta see that.

So many references of Jack London's "To Build A Fire" lately, what with the Vortex and all.
Avatar 6:26pm ndbob:

@Matt - it's great
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27pm Doug Schulkind:

Here's a piece about soundtrack music, with special mention of McCabe & Mrs. Miller, I wrote ages ago: wfmu.org...
Avatar 6:29pm Aurélie E:

@Dean I just found out that al's bar turned into a yoga studio, geez new age bullshit x la.curbed.com...
Avatar 6:30pm glenn:

here's a GREAT guitarist who's a big fan of kottke's .

Avatar 6:32pm ndbob:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:32pm Doug Schulkind:

Grab a pick and start jamming.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm Doug Schulkind:

Tampa Red does a nice rendition, ndbob.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm Jeff Golick:

Ice pick, AMIRITE?
Avatar 6:34pm ndbob:

@Doug will check it out
Avatar 6:34pm Matt from Springfield:

@Jeff G: The IRA's favorite way to "jam"!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35pm Konin:

Far east, far west, far out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36pm Gary:

I'm embarrassed to admit I've never seen McCabe & Mrs. Miller. I definitely didn't know Leonard Cohen supplied some of the soundtrack. I think I had a similar association as you, Doug, to Ghost & Mrs. Muir or something. If it's Criterion I can watch it on Hulu, maybe, yes?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:37pm Doug Schulkind:

@Gary
I believe ALL of the music for M&MM is Leonard Cohen!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:37pm Jeff Golick:

WHAT GARY JUST SAID, TO THE LETTER. !!!
(Hi, Gary.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:37pm Doug Schulkind:

@Konin
Welcome aboard!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38pm Gary:

Howdy, Jeff!
Avatar 6:38pm Aurélie E:

@doug: got to go!! thanks!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38pm Doug Schulkind:

Next up, the man who makes me weep...
Avatar 6:38pm hyde:

you people who haven't watched MCCABE AND MRS MILLER need to rectify this oversight, asap!
  6:38pm Dean:

@Aurélie E: I moved out of LA on August 15, 2001. Al's closed one day later on August 16. The scars are permanent, I'm afraid. I loved that place. Used to do homework there during grad school. One year prior to our departure, on August 15, 2000, my wife and I were married. We went to Al's that night, go figure. Drunk Horse played. But the Curbed piece cites bands that came late to the scene, by my lights. In addition to Ronee Blakely, I heard a ton of first wave LA punk at Al's, not to mention SPK, the bizarre rockabilly of Keith Joe Dick, the Mentors with Fear's Lee Ving joining in...

@glenn: She's terrific, and the guitar is beautiful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:39pm Konin:

Glad to be so, Doug, always enjoy your show. Especially after having enjoyed some of the native beers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:39pm Doug Schulkind:

Bye Aurélie! Great you could drop by.
Avatar 6:39pm ndbob:

Heya Gary!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm Doug Schulkind:

The second guitar here with JCF is played by Al Stewart.
Avatar 6:41pm Aurélie E:

@Dean: amazing x
@Doug: gonna be there 4 ur next show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41pm Doug Schulkind:

@Konin
Be careful, the natives might want their beers back. (OK, that was awful and vaguely racist.)
Avatar 6:41pm Matt from Springfield:

Al, always a great classical guitarist.

Take care, Aurélie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:42pm Gary:

Hi ndbob! And, hyde, I'm gonna check on Hulu this weekend ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:42pm Konin:

Oh, I was referring to MY native beers, Doug, which makes your remark totally OK!
Avatar 6:43pm northguineahills:

I love snowy days :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:43pm Konin:

I always want those beers back. I'm a native too!
Avatar 6:46pm hyde:

@Gary it really is great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:47pm Jeff Golick:

I too am looking forward. (Believe it or not, am a big Altman fan.)
  6:47pm earrie:

Gorgeous listening. Thanks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:47pm Jeff Golick:

(Belated "heh" to Matt from Springfield.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm Doug Schulkind:

That's a relief, Konin! Just as long as you aren't Konin the Barbarian. (Shit, now I feel bad again.)

e.a.r.r.i.e.!.!.
  6:48pm earrie:

(Dinner dîner.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm Konin:

totally fine, I get the confusion,D. I'm actually Konin the Barber. But don't take me serious on that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm Gary:

This is pretty awesome
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm Konin:

It's a world of reference these days
Avatar 6:52pm Matt from Springfield:

Speaking of instrumental guitaring, I was pleased that a recent commercial featured the tune of Fleetwood Mac/Lindsey Buckingham's "Never Going Back Again". Also because (Gratuitous Knowledge Memo: ) that song started out as an instro acoustic demo titled "Brushes".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:52pm Doug Schulkind:

I just learned, via Facebook, that there is something called the New York Guitar Festival taking place. Right now.

Avatar 6:54pm ndbob:

excellent show Doug!
Avatar 6:54pm Matt from Springfield:

@Doug: BUT, can we listen to it worldwide, right now, like the Pittsburgh Guitar Festival? Don't even have to put up for hotel rooms for *these* musicians!
Avatar 6:54pm northguineahills:

T'was grand, Doug! Thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm Doug Schulkind:

My cat, Minerva, has been warming herself behind my computer throughout the show. She keeps getting up as if to hop down, causing me to lunge in case she steps on a button that knocks me off the air. So far, so good. She's just washing now. Should be OK for the next 6 minutes.

THANKS ndbob & NGH and Matt and everysingleperson!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm Jeff Golick:

A beauty, Doug. Tugging at the heart- and other-strings.
Avatar 6:55pm hyde:

@Doug there's also a cool looking early american guitars show (the instruments of C.F. Martin) up at the Met: www.metmuseum.org...

  5:08pm Listener Gregory:

Doug, you seem to say that Jackson C. Frank's album "Blues Run the Game" was the only one released in his lifetime. But my vast experience (i.e., Allmusic.com) tells me that his only album was self-titled ("Jackson C. Frank"), and that BRtG was the name of the much later reissue. No?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15pm Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Gregory
Yah, I misspoke! Thanks for catching that. (I will now double your pay.)
