Live Performance by Doug Wieselman

On his new album, "From Water," Clarinetist Doug Wieselman creates melodies that he "hears" in bodies of water – ocean beaches, streams, hot springs as well as wind. Doug is a notable sideman, who has played with the likes of Lou Reed, Yoko Ono, Martha Wainwright, Sam Amidon, Iron & Wine, Bettye Lavette, Marianne Faithful, Antony and The Johnsons, and tons others. He also was a founding member of the Kamikaze Ground Crew. For this album, Wieselman played vintage clarinets looped live through a vintage 1960 Vibrolux amplifier and used lots of room mics to build this lush landscape. Doug says, "Each melody is specific to the place. If I return to a beach, even after many years, I hear the same song." Doug Wieselman played some of these melodies live on Irene's show and talked about the project.

The caption says El Cerrito, so I think you're looking west across the upper part of San Francisco Bay, towards Sausalito and Tiburon, one of my favorite places on the planet.

Hi everybody!! Sorry, I've been setting up and soundchecking our live guest today, Doug Wieselman. @fleep, you are correct. One of my favorite places in Earth too.

the glowing one:

Pareidolia is a psychological phenomenon involving a vague and random stimulus (often an image or sound) being perceived as significant, a form of apophenia. Common examples include seeing images of animals or faces in clouds, the man in the moon or the Moon rabbit, and hearing hidden messages on records when played in reverse.

This reminds me a bit of Sheila Chandra's album ABoneCroneDrone...in the liner notes she talks about hearing specific melodies within the harmonics of drone sounds.
