Avatar 9:02am ndbob:

morning Doug and everyone!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:03am listener james from westwood:

man, mention of fire and seeing this snow makes me want to move my bucket-list item of renting a cabin or other dwelling somewhere up north with a fireplace up to slot #1.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03am Doug Schulkind:

We're still in the single digits here in Iceburgh. How about your necks of the wood?

Morning ndbob!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:04am listener james from westwood:

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:04am Brian in UK:

Hello folks. I will get Greenpeas onto to you james and mushypeas too. Having a whale of a time here.
Avatar 9:05am glenn:

seals and crofts are pretty oily. they'd burn very hot, for a brief period of time. wait, that was their musical career.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05am Doug Schulkind:

Handsome hellos to you, Brian in UK!
Avatar 9:07am glenn:

it's -25 celsius here, with windchill. take that, suckahs.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Hugo:

@Doug: I'm planning to put on the blog three Lateef concerts on three consecutive nights in Europe in October 1971 with this line-up:

Yusef Lateef - tenor sax, flute, oboe
Kenny Barron - piano
Bob Cunningham - bass
Albert 'Tootie' Heath - drums

Sounds interesting, no?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:49am Brian in UK:

Nigeria through Burundi & onwards
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Doug Schulkind:

..except this one was recorded in Africa. In Zaria, Nigeria.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am Doug Schulkind:

Sounds great, Hugo!! A little later, i will be playing something from that quartet live at Montreux in 1970.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am Gary:

This is an awesome track
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:51am Brian in UK:

@Hugo ever been to Montreux?
Avatar 9:54am still b/p:

A minus 2 good morning.
Temperature in the bedroom reads 45. I had the thermometer at floor level in there yesterday out of curiosity and it said 40. Got bundled in the big-guns sort of cold protection layers to walk somewhere last evening when it was minus 4. I was HOT within minutes. For a longer walk today, what, just a smoking jacket and earmuffs?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:58am listener james from westwood:

i'm exceptionally lucky. my windows suck (single-pane casement), but i am on the 2nd floor of a 3-floor building occupied mostly by seniors who crank their heat starting in october. consequently it's 68 in here and i'm not paying for the platinum coke spoon for the CEO of the local power combine.
Avatar 🥁 10:00am duke:

We lost power for about 8 hours last night. Ran the generator to power important stuff: heat, internet so I could listen to Sinner's Crossroads
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:00am Artie:

Ahhhh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am Hugo:

@Brian: Yes, in 2000, I think, but unfortunately not during the jazz festival. As this was in summer, we went all the way up to the St. Bernhard pass from where you can cross over into italy. Had a lunch meal, went to look at the dogs and brought with me a couple of souvenir bottles of strong stuff, which, would you believe, are still unopened!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am Doug Schulkind:

still b/p and Artie, grab a blanket and a dive in!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:03am Brian in UK:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am Doug Schulkind:

Bassist Ernie Farrow is playing here a rabat or, sometimes called a rebob.

  10:11am Mark:

I'm a different Mark than the other Mark btw.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am Doug Schulkind:

A little later in the show, I will play Yusef's "I Be Cold." One of my all-time all-time favorites. It will sound extra extra wonderful today.

I figured that Mark. Besides, you don't look markish.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am Doug Schulkind:

You can hear the influence on Yusef of Dizzy Gillespie's forays intro Afro-Cuban sounds big-time in this number.
Avatar 10:21am ndbob:

Just walked out to get my mail from yesterday - about a one block walk - this would be considered a nice winter day in North Dakota even though it's two degrees - sunny and no wind
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am Doug Schulkind:

You traded up in the weather department, ndbob!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:22am listener james from westwood:

it's all relative. we're creeping toward double digits at 9 right now in bergen county. average that out w/ the near-70-degree december day we had last year.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am Doug Schulkind:

Folks, you might want to have a defibrillator handy to get you through the oboe solo coming up next...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am Jeff Golick:

To Bro Doug and all other bros (& bras?):

Just quickly popping in to say that the snow day for NYC schools has rendered my listening choices quite moot this fine morning.

Looking forward to enjoying this one via the magic of the archive.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am Hugo:

@Brian: You can purchase a box of Miles Davis concerts in Montreux. Yusef Lateef played at the Kongsberg Jazz Festival and I have a download of excerpts of concerts once shown on tv here. He's in there somewhere.

Avatar 10:33am ndbob:

@Doug yep - though Monday and Tuesday will be bad even by ND standards - could hit minus 15 here - the difference is that by next weekend - and hopefully for the next couple weeks - highs in the 40s - Jamestown was minus 28 the other day

@kat about two inches - the problem is, that while the path to the parking lot here has been cleared off, the sidewalk to the mailbox - a bit of a walk - is iced over - there's enough crunchy snow behind the cars to go there though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am Doug Schulkind:

Cannonball -alto

Joe Zawinul - piano
Sam Jones - bass
Louis Hayes - drums

Yusef Lateef - oboe (and tenor and flute)

When my friend was just starting to play drums, he'd been in his band for about a month, he wasn't very good yet, and they got a gig playing a PRISON! They're doing the gig, playing along, and an inmate stands up and yells, "Give the drummer some!" So what choice did he have? He did, as he put it, his best "kick the drum set down the stairs" drum solo, and that was a wrap! (The name of your show always reminds me of this story.) GREAT GREAT show today, and very classy to pay tribute to the very under-exposed Yusef Lateef.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am Doug Schulkind:

@Mark
I have long contemplated doing a show of all music recorded in prison! Thanks for the nudge.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am Parq:

Just signing in now, but caught most of the first hour at home. One more hour to go, and looking very much forward to it. Hope you are coping successfully with your interconnect glitches.

Avatar 11:38am Holly in NC:

Morning everyone! I'm almost hesitant to share that it's a relatively balmy 28°F here in Durham, and very sunny. Still windy as heck though.

What a super song this is!. I am shaking my ash. :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am Doug Schulkind:

From a picture of Yusef appearing on the cover of this record 10 Years Hence, I made this watch: blogfiles.wfmu.org...

Glad you're warm, Holly. You had some hellish hot days last summer. You deserve a break.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am Doug Schulkind:

Yusef preferred not revealing what "instrument" he was using to create the croaking sound on this cut. Sealhorn is the usual guess.
Avatar 11:41am kat330:

Hey, Holly, and Happy New Year! We had mid-40's on NYE and NY day, so not too shabby here either.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:41am Brian in UK:

@kat330 - Happy New Year backatcha! Glad you're taking care of your birds.

I am currently caring for chickens, who surprisingly(to me) seem quite weather-impervious/oblivious. Their human parents assured me they'd be fine through this weather, and that summer is more dangerous. Huh!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am Uncle Michael:

Lunch today w/b a classic French omelette w. a splash of homemade chix stock added while beating the eggs, rolled around a light dusting of gruyere. To be eaten with a dandelion green & mache salad dressed w. a few drops of red wine vinegar & olive oil, and maybe a small slice of homemade chix liver mousse.

Took me longer to type that than it will to make, that's the beauty of it all! :-)
