Joe Frank was interviewed briefly and answered phone questions as part of WFMU's spring fundraising marathon some time during the aughts IIRC. @Tome, 30 hrs. battery life is about right for MP3s on that, but as w/most MP3 players, it declines a bit if you press buttons a lot or switch it on and off a lot, as I do. (They used to claim 40 or 50 hours, def. a stretch.) Oddly, FM listening eats more power than playing MP3s.

The Coen Brothers used two details from Van Ronk's life - he was a merchant marine, and he was offered one of the roles in Peter, Paul and Mary by Albert Grossman. But I agree, the character in that movie had no resemblance to Van Ronk.

“ Two wonderful scenes do relate specifically to David, though. In one, Llewyn Davis asks Mel, the owner of the record company that released his first album, for royalties, telling the man he doesn't even own an overcoat.”
  5:08pm
JakeGould:

“In another scene, Davis says (perhaps sarcastically) to someone in the seaman's union, "You won't give me my papers because I'm a communist?" The man mutters, "Shachtmanite." That's a political reference that almost no one in the world will get -- but to me, who hung around but didn't join a small socialist sect known as the Shachtmanites, it's very, very funny.”

I haven't seen the flik or read the book, but that's my favorite version of "Both Sides Now" too. You should check into his version of "That Song About the Midway" from the "Sunday Street" album, all of which is wonderful.

yeah got Joe to sign one of those. It does seem a bit breezy his book...maybe he'll write some more? But the live thing I saw him do reading with Robyn H. doing the music was sick!

I didn't like "Inside Llewyn Davis" at all, and I love the Coen Brothers. I felt like it was a squandered opportunity to explore a vibrant musical scene. Almost every character in the movie came off as a complete loser.
Avatar 5:12pm
glenn:

they ARE complete losers.

LovecraftDude888:

Yikes, Ken. I loved No Country F. Old Men but my mom hated it! Too violent and "pointless" for her. I thought it rocked! "Put it in your pocket...it's your lucky quarter"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm

Ken: Yes, every character screamed LOSER. But it was an entertaining portrait of losers. Didn't you at least like the cat?

The ultimate Union Democrat was Daley, a stone right winger on every issue except unions. Most of his constituents were the same way -- I know my dad was. Jimmy Cagney was, too, or so it seems from his autobio.

So you liked “The Ladykillers” and “The Man Who Wasn't There?” I can’t think that “Inside Llewyn Davis” is worse than those turds.

- okay - reading Van Ronk's ex's opinion @ that Link puts Ken's opinion in context...Then again, the Coen's did Ulysses in Old Weird America in 'O Brother'...

i love the coen brothers too, but i hate a couple of their movies, notably barton fink, which everybody loves, and i love miller's crossing, which nobody even seems to know exists.

LovecraftDude888:

I love Big Liebowski even though it's like, a good "bad" movie. in a sense. It's a goof.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:14pm
Ken:

Jake, those are two Coen movies I missed! I guess I was lucky.
  5:15pm
JakeGould:

“Big Liebowski” is the best. I hate the frat-boy/dude-bro culture that has grown up around that film, but remember just loving it right when it came out.
  5:15pm

Miller's Crossing is really good. Barton Fink..used to hate it, now kinda dig it. Sort of.

Well, Ken… If you think all of the characters in “Inside Llewyn Davis” are losers, then what about Scorsese films like “Raging Bull” or “Taxi Driver?” I mean those are films about mental cases & the mental cases around them.

maybe it's that i just don't like john turturro.

aye, Blood Simple rawks. I need to rescreen that soon a candidate for the new Idiot Box I got.

Also, yes, “The Ladykillers” and “The Man Who Wasn't There” are utter shit.

I've seen Scarecrow a few times the past few years, that's a great great film!! Hackman and Pacino. total loserdom.

Hackman goes "I can tear the ass out of an elephant." Thank you, Gene!

True Jake, but the difference is that I CARED about the characters in Scorcese films. Speaking of which, The Wolf of Wall Street has the GREATEST DRUG SCENE ever in the history of cinema.

Yep, the Quaaludes scene! wow.
  5:22pm

Okay, fair enough on the Scorsese assessment. But I can’t get myself to see “Wolf of Wall Street” because I just hat dealing with movies that are nearly 3 hours in length.

Never saw "Hudsucker" and I confess that the chicken in me is reluctant to see "Miller". I liked looking at "Wasn't There", anyway, and thought "Ladykillers" was just mediocre -- which, in its own way is even worse than a movie that outright sucks.
  5:24pm

But will see if I can do an early showing of it so I can leave the theater & do something else afterwards. 90 minute movies. That’s what I like.

not a Brad Pitt fan but saw "Snatch" other day first time was freaking funny as hell! as long as we're now talking movies? and NOT audio snob or what we should be music I am guessing for f sake !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:26pm
Ken:

Yeah, WAY better than anything in Scarface. But then again, I had a friend in High School whose nickname was "Quay," so maybe Im biased. Wold of Wall Street was worth three hours - I loved it. My daughter hated it though.
  5:30pm
LovecraftDude888:

nevermind that, if you can't deal with Millers Crossing don't see Only God Forgives...I did 2 weeks ago...not a good film really but it's over the top in a major way. Pretty violent.

A man comes home from a long day at work, plops down on the couch in front of the television and turns on the game. Without hesitation he tells his wife, “Get me a beer before it starts.” The wife sighs and gets him a beer.
Fifteen minutes later he says, “Get me another beer before it starts.” She looks cross, but fetches another beer and slams it down next to him. He quickly finishes that beer and a few minutes later says, “Quick, get me another beer, it’s going to start any minute.” The wife is furious. She yells at him “Is that all you’re going to do tonight? Drink beer and sit in front of that TV? You’re nothing but a lazy, drunken, fat slob, and furthermore …”

The man sighs and says, “It's started …”

Howdy Irwin,

I'm so glad I came back for the last hour so I could re-enjoy "Slap me with your punishing rod" over 100 Buffalo Bills. Are you _sure_ those Joe Frank episodes aren't real? That scene sounds amazingly real to me. "LOUDER!"

I hope you are enjoying your snow and went sledding or skitching or something fun!
