Saw Dennis W. sing "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away" in late 60s Kansas City.

Some Tech problems this morning eh? Great to hear the Beach Boys and Dennis..

Great to hear the Brainen/Diken power-duo! Good stuff fellas!
Avatar 🥁 9:34am duke:

www.youtube.com... Dennis Wilson drums and shakes his head on the T.A.M.I show. Some great performances on that show. It's like a snapshot of popular music in the mid 60's
Avatar 9:38am kat330:

Thanks for the link!

Afternöön all. Good show.
Avatar 9:49am kat330:

It's the saturday of äöäöäöäös here.

Lauantai, ei? [Philo's not home to verify at the moment]
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am dale:

i hate to say i never cared for the beach boys although i like brian and van dyke parks work together. BUT --- i appreciate that only a station like fmu would do a show like this.
Avatar 9:58am kat330:

This is lush and lovely forever!
Avatar 🥁 9:58am duke:

Yes, this is beautiful
Avatar 9:59am kat330:

Love these tracks, just beautiful. Thank you

Wow, what an ending yelp!

re: folk sounding - i always heard a barbershop influence
Avatar 10:01am mauri:

That's correct kat!
Maybe I hit the city tonight.
these songs make me feel like summer tho the weather is dreadful.
Avatar 10:01am kat330:

Their coordinated stripes would support that.
Avatar 🥁 10:02am duke:

@dale like you I was never a beach boys fan, but over the last couple of years I have really begun to appreciate them lately after re-listening to stuff like Pet Sounds.
  10:02am David Greenberger:

Dennis, i also got B.B. Today right when it came out. I remember buying it at J.C. Penney's (everyone had a record dept. then!), when I was at the store with my mother (I was 11). Listening to it continuously,it was like some hard to fathom glimpse into an adult world, and a world out beyond the confines of Erie, PA. And I'm glad to say that that album still holds much of its original mystery for me. Happy new year Bob and Dennis! (further delighted to be listening whilst visiting in Brooklyn.)
Avatar 10:05am beavoux:

Yes it was This Car
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am dale:

duke, i'm liking what i'm hearing. it's just that you never heard this stuff on the radiola.

david - been to the peninsula MANY times when living in wny
Avatar 10:07am kat330:

My minimal star-clicking suggests I'm also not a huge BB fan, but God Only Knows there are more than a handful of their songs / sounds right up there in my fave songs of all time.
Avatar 10:12am beavoux:

How about Pacific Ocean Blue?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am Dominick:

Celebrate the News - the great b side of Breakaway
Avatar 10:15am kat330:

I suppose, in general, my sonic tastes lean to Brian over Dennis.
  10:15am Sd:

Laurie bird is also great in cockfighter, another monte hellman flick
Avatar 10:18am kat330:

@Sd: Yes! Philo and I published some Charles Willeford works and through that got to know his widow, Betsy. Have you seen Woman Chaser?(she can be seen in one scene of the film)
  10:22am David Greenberger:

Dale - yes, Presque Isle State PArk -grew up with regular visits to that place (in summers with family -then, as a teenager, in winters too, taking in the existential bleakness of the frozen lake - and also getting stoned, circa 1970-71).
Avatar 10:24am Jeezy:

Wow, can we please get link to the live Little Honda, if it was from youtube...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am dale:

you meet the nicest people on a little honda
Avatar 10:26am Jeezy:

I did some nice things AND not so nice things in my Little Honda... Well, until it was stolen in Queens. Haha...
Avatar 10:27am kat330:

Here's one of the nicest people on Google Earth on his little Honda Twinstar: goo.gl...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am Sem Chumbo:

@kat: Charles Willeford? Very envious; love, love those books. The voice: singular in that genre, to my reading ear.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am dale:

kat, that is just downright creepy - and cool! is that a 200 or 400?
  10:31am Sd:

@kat never heard of it. I thought she was only in those two movies and annie hall
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am dale:

i had to google who rumbo was - the captain! i DO really like this solo stuff.
Avatar 10:32am kat330:

@Sem: Just about exactly this date in 2009, we were staying overnight with Betsy in Miami. Here's a couple links: tinyurl.com... and
tinyurl.com...
Avatar 10:34am kat330:

@dale: Isn't it?? Philo said he noticed the Google Earth vehicle behind him, even waved at it, and then periodically checked the area to see if the new "footage" showed up -- and it did.

@Sd: Realized I was unclear. Betsy, not Laurie, in The Woman Chaser (common link being Willeford work).
  10:34am LL:

Great show - perfect timing! Best wishes for a great New Year!
Avatar 10:34am kat330:

@dale: Philo just walked in the door: "a 250"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am Sem Chumbo:

@kat: very grateful for these. What a serendipitous connection.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am dale:

i have a ct90, cb200, cm400 and my wife has a hondamatic 400. you can't kill an old honda.
Avatar 10:37am glenn:

hoke moseley is one of the great anti-heroes.
Avatar 10:38am kat330:

@dale: I know nothing of bikes myself. He got it a couple years ago to commute to his nearby office and allowing us to get by with just one car (NOT a Honda ;).

@Sem: Those book covers are Philo's handiwork, too.
Avatar 10:39am kat330:

[yelling off-screen PHILO, get in here and read the comments! I'm out of my depth!]
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am Sem Chumbo:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am dale:

you meet the nicest people on an fmu comments board
Avatar 10:42am Philo Gristle:

Willeford and classic Hondas? Damn. I need to start from the beginning. Hello, all!
Avatar 10:46am Philo Gristle:

Dale, that's a 1982 CM250C. I'd rather be on a 1970 CL350, but I wanted something slightly newer I can learn basic mechanics on, without the need to wrench every single day.
Avatar 10:47am glenn:

this is a great blog for folks who like books and book design.
www.casualoptimist.com
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am dale:

you wouldn't need to wrench either very much. just run some seafoam or techron and marvel mystery oil in your gas to keep carbs clean and top end lubed. stators and regulators are easy to find which is the only issue an old honda may have
Avatar 10:49am kat330:

I can tie Beach Boys and Philo's Twinstar in a neat bow: tinyurl.com...

Hey, Bob and Dennis, this has been a special morning with you and the BB's! Thanks and HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Avatar 10:49am Philo Gristle:

Interesting and creepy about Laurie Bird is that she was Art Garfunkel's girlfriend and when he was the lead in Nicolas Roeg's BAD TIMING, Theresa Russell played his girlfriend and her fate mirrored Bird's. I think it was an accident that it turned out that way, but creepy nevertheless...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am dale:

that same basic motor lives on in the rebel. don't think it's ANY different except for the frame and rake and trail
Avatar 10:52am Philo Gristle:

@Glenn Interestingly synchronous link! First thing I see is Luc Sante writing about Llewyn Davis, and he not only is a big Willeford fan, but was married to Melissa Pierson who wrote one of the best motorcycle books of recent vintage, The Perfect vehicle. Not Hondas so much, but Guzzis'.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am dale:

i have a 72 bmw airhead too. wasn't gonna spoil the bonding moment. you want a guzzi/honda get a cx500
Avatar 10:55am Philo Gristle:

@Dale Yeah, that engine started with the Twinstar, CM250 is the mid-period (and not quite as ugly as the Rebel), and still chugging along in Rebel. There's something about those early 70s Japanese bikes that appeals... and I'd never want anything bigger than a 500.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am dale:

i had an st1300 for a while. great on the highway. a monster for the driveway
Avatar 🥁 10:56am duke:

Great show Bob and Dennis. Thanks!
Avatar 10:56am kat330:

One of their better covers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am Dominick:

Do You Wanna Dance - one of the most insane mixes ever. Verses are pulled back then the chorus hits and BOOM!
Avatar 10:58am kat330:

Hoping 2014 is better in all ways for us all -- Happy New Year, Friends!
Avatar 10:58am Philo Gristle:

I like the light weight and overall nimbleness of smaller bikes. T500 Suzuki or Guzzi V5 monza outside pre-76 Honda Scramblers....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am dale:

if you never get passed by a semi i prefer little as well.
Avatar 11:00am Philo Gristle:

Been a great soundtrack to a fun conversation! Did anyone mention Two-Lane Blacktop??
Avatar 11:00am Jeezy:

INCREDIBLE show... reminds one how worthwhile our donations are!
