Am thankful you are doing this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:47pm Jeff Golick:

And, while we're mourning...RIP Jim Hall. www.chicagoreader.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:48pm Doug Schulkind:

Only one hour? Really? What was I thinking?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:49pm Doug Schulkind:

Mourning becomes dyspeptic.
Avatar 5:49pm Matt from Springfield:

Hey Doug and Jeff! How's it going?

Is this another tribute? So many at the year's end.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:50pm Doug Schulkind:

Hiya Matt. Too many damn tributes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:52pm Doug Schulkind:

How about some Thelonious while you're waiting for the show to start?
Avatar 5:52pm Matt from Springfield:

Sounds bout right!
Avatar 5:53pm Matt from Springfield:

Always Easy Street, in the WFMUniverse...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:54pm Jeff Golick:

And now, if you'll excuse me, I gotta go watch some Snooki gifs for the next ten minutes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:54pm Jeff Golick:

Ok I'm back.
Avatar 5:56pm Matt from Springfield:

Twisting space-time, those gifs are.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm Jeff Golick:

Any of y'all seen/heard that "new" Monk 1969 perf just released?

Also: hi Matt!
Avatar 5:59pm hyde:

I don't like seeing all of this shuffling off the mortal coil, but damn if I aint a sucker for a good tribute show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:59pm Doug Schulkind:

I just bought some Snookigifs at Duane Reade. Nothing else removes toe pus as effectively.
Avatar 6:00pm glenn:

toe. pus. blergggggghhhhh.
Avatar 6:01pm ndbob:

evening Doug and everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:01pm Doug Schulkind:

Hey hyde and ndbob and glenn!
Avatar 6:01pm Matt from Springfield:

Hi Jeff! And hyde, glenn, NDBob and all Drummers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:02pm pacific standard simon:

ACK! Yez started widdout me!
Avatar 6:03pm glenn:

tardiness is not permitted at gtdr.
Avatar 6:04pm glenn:

okay, it's permitted, but it's frowned upon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:04pm pacific standard simon:

Tarty-ness, however...
Avatar 6:04pm Matt from Springfield:

Hi PSS. Now you must catch up on the online tutorial, once the Archive's posted.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05pm Jeff Golick:

Howsabout tartan-ness?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05pm Doug Schulkind:

Hallo there pacificSS!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:06pm Hugo:

Klunkiness, though, is encouraged ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:06pm pacific standard simon:

I am (wuz) lizzening to Grateful Dead boots and folding psychedelic origami Christmas trees.

HI Doug -- no workee today!
Avatar 6:07pm Matt from Springfield:

Tartans are fine and artistic.
Kilts are as well, provided they aren't the under-most of your underwear...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:08pm Doug Schulkind:

Brother Hugo en la casa!
Avatar 6:08pm glenn:

grateful dead bootlegs are kinda the musical version of coals to newcastle.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:08pm pacific standard simon:

Kluginess is guaranteed. Matt, Jeff, glenn, Hugo, bob, hyde... did I fergets anyone?
Avatar 6:09pm Matt from Springfield:

"Over the Rainbow" seems to be an instrumental jazz standard. I guess every player wants to show their take on it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:10pm pacific standard simon:

I'm typing this in my underwear, Matt -- LOOONG underwear. It's chilly, for the Northwest!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:10pm Jeff Golick:

BEN WEBSTER. Like buttah.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:11pm Doug Schulkind:

Almost certainly Rick Laird on bass and Jackie Dougan on drums here with Stan and Ben.
Avatar 6:11pm hyde:

hi to everyone i didn't say hi back to
Avatar 6:11pm Matt from Springfield:

Chilly here too PSS! There was snow earlier today, though not nearly as nasty as the rainy/slushy/freezy night last night! Voted worst weather of the year here, unanimously (1/1)!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12pm pacific standard simon:

I like that you can hear the bass as well as any of the instruments. THAT Rick Laird, Doug?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12pm Doug Schulkind:

@Jeff Golick
DJ Monica has a dog named Butter. Maybe I'll name my next dog Ben Webster.

@hyde
Are you sitting in a hi-back chair?
Avatar 6:12pm ndbob:

about two inches of snow here
Avatar 6:13pm Matt from Springfield:

"Blanket" HIs then, to keep everyone warm!

@Jeff: Substituting Ben Webster for butter saves you 300 calories a meal!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm pacific standard simon:

Webstered English muffin... yum.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14pm Doug Schulkind:

@pacific standard simon
Yes, THAT Rick Laird.
Avatar 6:14pm hyde:

that Over the Rainbow was FANTASTIC
Avatar 6:14pm Luna:

Next dog......Fine. i know when I'm not wanted.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:15pm Jeff Golick:

Matt: and I've been using Mike Webster all this time...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:15pm Doug Schulkind:

@Luna
I thought maybe you could use a friend. (gulp)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:16pm pacific standard simon:

There have been rumors of snow here, but mostly it's too cold and dry.
Avatar 6:16pm Luna:

I can't even look at you right now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:17pm Doug Schulkind:

@Jeff
Mike Webster was a Hall of Fame center (and tragic brain-injury recipient) of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Avatar 6:17pm Matt from Springfield:

@Jeff: Heh! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:17pm Doug Schulkind:

@Luna
Well would you mind not smelling me, too?
Avatar 6:18pm Luna:

However, if my food bowl was filled, we could probably move on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:18pm Jeff Golick:

@Doug: Yeah, that was a little Pittsburgh for ya there. Also good on a bagel: Jack Ham.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:18pm Jeff Golick:

Ok thanks you've been great....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:19pm pacific standard simon:

Bad on a bagel: jack Mormon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:20pm Hugo:

I knew Mike Osborne would be in here!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:21pm Doug Schulkind:

@Hugo
Wish I could've fit in the amazing studio duet sessions Stan & Mike did, but with only an hour. Sigh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:22pm Doug Schulkind:

Here, from 2007, was my Mike Osborne memorial broadcast: wfmu.org...
Avatar 6:22pm glenn:

good on a bagel (toasted) - honey and parmigiano.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:23pm Doug Schulkind:

Here, our friends from Destination Out chat about the Stan Tracey/Mike Osborne recording "Original" destination-out.com...
Avatar 6:24pm Matt from Springfield:

@glenn: Mmmm, interessant.
Avatar 6:25pm Carmichael:

Hiya, Doug.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:25pm Doug Schulkind:

Hello and welcome, Carmichael.
Avatar 6:26pm hyde:

I am cracking up reading the comments from the Mike Osborne show where it gets to the part noting a DO comment about how Marion Brown loves to receive calls from fans, but please call before 6 PM.
Avatar 6:26pm ndbob:

hello Carmichael!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27pm Doug Schulkind:

@hyde
Marion B was in a nursing home by that point.
Avatar 6:28pm hyde:

@Doug makes sense. I took a class with MB in the 80's, he really was a super sweet guy.
Avatar 6:29pm Matt from Springfield:

You mean: "Just *one* of a few"
Avatar 6:29pm hyde:

also, have I mentioned this show is blowing my mind? I have apparently been way too woefully ignoramus about Stan Tracey to this point in my listenin' life.
Avatar 6:29pm Matt from Springfield:

Thank you, welcome again, Carm!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm Jeff Golick:

I regret that I never called that number for Marion Brown.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:32pm pacific standard simon:

I, too, share hyde's woeful ignorance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm Doug Schulkind:

Me too, Jeff. Me too.
  6:36pm earrie:

I didn't know, either. Lovely music.
And makes me feel lament these missing mountains in the airwaves.
Avatar 6:36pm hyde:

@pss my British jazz iq is about 62
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36pm pacific standard simon:

Not to be confused with The Crimson Jazz Trio.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36pm Doug Schulkind:

@hyde
Wow! Marion taught at a school in Connecticut, no?
  6:37pm earrie:

Er, feel lament for or just lament.
It's a woeful lack of presence across the public airspace.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:37pm Doug Schulkind:

Another brilliant live recording from Stan. This one is from the legendary 100 Club in London.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38pm Doug Schulkind:

Welcome back dearrie earrie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:39pm Hugo:

Yes, the one tune that just has to be included! But there was a second version of Under Milk Wood with Art Themen on tenor and with recitation by Donald Houston. Not so well known.
Avatar 6:39pm Matt from Springfield:

Brilliant indeed!
Avatar 6:39pm hyde:

@Doug my class with him was at Umass. During the time I was there, they had Max Roach, Archie Shepp and Marion Brown all teaching.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41pm Doug Schulkind:

@Hugo
Tracey recorded Milk Wood three different times, I believe. Art Themen is on Soprano sax on this cut.

@hyde
A UMass. That's right. My hero Yusef Lateef was also (and still is, I believe) there.
Avatar 6:41pm Matt from Springfield:

@hyde: With weekly professorial jam sessions?!! (To dream :)
Avatar 6:42pm Matt from Springfield:

Really Doug? Sounds more like UJazz with that impressive record.
Avatar 6:44pm hyde:

@Doug yeah, I just missed the Lateef era. I think he came the year after I graduated.

@Matt I wish! I got to see them all play, but separate-like.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:45pm Doug Schulkind:

One of my great regrets is that I didn't go to Wesleyan. If I had, I would have studied with Ed Blackwell. But I didn't because my sister was there and I needed to go stake out my own turf. At least I got to study with Candy Johnson and Hugh Ragin at Oberlin. (And, for one brief shining weekend, with visiting artist Anthony Braxton, who, of course, is now at Wesleyan.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46pm Jeff Golick:

jazz headz: is the second, smaller photo in this article, in fact, Keith Jarrett? www.nytimes.com...
  6:46pm earrie:

Heya. Half my eyes are here and the other on the stove.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:47pm Doug Schulkind:

@earrie
Do what you gotta do. Listen safely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:47pm Jeff Golick:

@Doug: per Braxton's Tri-Centric Foundation newsletter, "this is Anthony's last semester at Wesleyan University."
Avatar 6:47pm hyde:

@Jeff i think that's Chick Corea
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm Hugo:

I'd say Chick Corea
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm Jeff Golick:

@hyde: that's what I thought too!
Avatar 6:49pm Matt from Springfield:

Give the Drummer Some!! :D
Avatar 6:49pm hyde:

@Jeff sadly, my fusion iq is higher than my British jazz IQ
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm Jeff Golick:

Alerted Nate Chinen via twitter, then started to doubt myself.
Hard to tell who's behind all that hair...
Avatar 6:50pm Matt from Springfield:

Sadly I can only Favorite this track once!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm Doug Schulkind:

@jeff Golick
WTF! Let me say that again. WTF! He better be going to Harvard. I remember when he was playing chess in Washington Square Park for $$$. Well, maybe just $.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm Doug Schulkind:

WKCR-FM at Columbia University is doing its Jim Hall memorial broadcast right now. I know that if I spent just a little more time listening to Jim Hall, I would adore him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm Jeff Golick:

@Doug: I think he's going to try and make his Tri-Centric Foundation into a full-fledged cultural operation, devote all of his energies there.
Avatar 6:54pm hyde:

@Doug are you listening to another jazz tribute radio show while doing your jazz tribute radio show??? if so, I'm impressed
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm Hugo:

Just saw some Youtube videos of Hall with Jimmy Giuffre. Splendissimo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm Jeff Golick:

This duo is really good, too. A great great show & tribute. Thanks, Doug! And Stan!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm Doug Schulkind:

Put me in the "definitely Chick Corea" camp. Can't you see the "I ♥ Scientology" t-shirt on underneath?!

OK, cheap shot. I admit it.
Avatar 6:56pm hyde:

@Hugo I've said it before, I'll say it again: Jimmy Giuffre is soooo underrated
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:56pm Doug Schulkind:

What hyde said (again).
Avatar 6:57pm ndbob:

excellent show Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm Hugo:

Yes, we have given Doug a good reason for playing Hall and Giuffre next time around
Avatar 6:58pm hyde:

fantastic show. ear opening. thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm pacific standard simon:

3/5 of a mile in 60 minutes...
Avatar 6:59pm Matt from Springfield:

Drummer given more than sufficiently some today!!
Stan Tracey, Always Remembered...

Have a good evening Doug and all you Drummers!
  7:00pm earrie:

Again! (archives)
Thanks, Doug.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:01pm Doug Schulkind:
