Honduran multi-instrumentalist Rolando "Chichi" Sosa has quietly played a crltical role in the development of Afro-Caribbean Garifuna music over the past two decades. He's composed and performed with Garifuna music's greatest star, the late Andy Palacio, as well as current stars Aurelio Martinez, Danny Michel and many others. He helped put together the all-star band Garifuna Collective which worked with many artists including the grondbreaking Umalali Garifuna Women's Project.

Recently Chichi extended his musical scope to work with the well-regarded retro Caribbean band Kobo Town. But he's rarely taken center stage himself - until now, as he leads his own band in NYC.

Chichi drops by tonight to share his music live and on cd and share the story of this rich music and culture from Central America and the Caribbean.

Be sure to give Chi Chi a facebook "Like" via https://www.facebook.com/chichi.eci!

Special thanks to Pablo Blanco of Elite Carib International for bringing Chichi to WFMU and the world.

The Nile Project curates collaborations among musicians from the 11 Nile countries to expose audiences to the cultures of their river neighbors. These musical experiences foster cross-cultural empathy and inspire environmental curiosity to shift the Nile from a divisive geopolitical argument to a uniting East-African conversation. The Velvet Underground were an amazing band in this World. Václav Havel would've backed me up on that...
  6:16pm mistercaz:

yep
Avatar 6:16pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...they even had an International line-up, w/ John Cale being Welsh, & Nico (sort of a member) East European - Warhol even being of East European descent...& just New York City being a World City to such an extent...
Avatar 6:23pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...naturally, the implications set in more & more since Lou's passing...; in a very real way, the Velvets invented the very idea of an Alternative in the first place - & who here hasn't been swept up in that titanic influence ??...

Good evening. I was able to come out to Barbes last week, and man I'm glad I did. Couldn't stay the whole time but wow Uri Sharlin and Mariachi Flor de Toloache were really something.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm KevinfromBayRidge:

Hello all..Just wanted to thank you Rob (& Irene) for a wonderfu Barbesl shew last week of course I scored my usual, a vintage FMU TShirt. Nice to be a local yokel sometimesl!
Avatar 6:50pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- great 1st set.
Avatar 6:52pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- yeah - a few different flavors last week & all great ! ; where I live it ain't no City, so I especially appreciate you bringing me the Live culture like that...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm KevinfromBayRidge:

@RevRab... Happy 50 tomorrow, hope you're off!!
Avatar 7:01pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- no, but I've been unemployed enuff in life I don't mind, really - unless I want to get all Marxist about the whole rotten deal
...We astrology enthusiasts consider the birthday the 'solar return' - & I actually took off my shirt & sunned myself on my lunch break today! The sun came out just long & warm enuff for it - in NorthNewEngland!: that doesn't happen often in early Nov. !...People have been generous enuff, I can @ least have a drink or something...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:02pm Rob W:

Kristina, glad you could make it to Barbes and glad you liked it! Everybody loved Mariachi Flor de Toloache - I'll have them on again sometime.
Avatar 7:08pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...on Underwater Theme Park early Thur. A.M.s - Meghan has been doing her travelog of the entire African continent! I brought up this week that a lot of Latin percussion is virtually unaltered from West African Vodoun ceremonial drumming. The original meaning of 'Mambo' is a Vodoun Priestess. Fascinating to me...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:15pm Kristina Koffee:

@RR that's really fascinating. Didn't know that about Latin percussion. I studied a bit of Haitian history back in school and that spurred my interest in the incredibly rich and interesting world of Voudoun. Thx for sharing :)
Avatar 7:17pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- yeah - he has some music for us guys alright!...
...yeah - for a while I got fascinated w/ the connections from Rock to Blues to West African Ceremonial practices - & they are surprisingly many & direct.
Avatar 7:18pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...by way of the Caribbean - btw...
Avatar 7:24pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- 22 instruments!
Avatar 7:31pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I often say it - but I hope it bears repeating; I have a special admiration for people who can just pick up an acoustic instrument & deliver the goods by their lonesome like this. Also a pleasure to hear something other than typical American Blues-Rock rhythms & patterns (as much as they are imprinted on my deepest core)...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34pm Kristina Koffee:

@RR definitely. Not always as simple as just being curious and open but I'd say often that's all it takes! One's perception of "I'm just not suited for this" is the biggest obstacle in delivering the goods :D
Avatar 7:38pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I think of Dylan in the 'No Direction Home' documentary saying he could hear a song once or twice & learn it; 'I had an agile mind.' Yeah - no kidding !
Avatar 7:42pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...this music is really impressively rhythmically accomplished - & emotionally affecting too !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:48pm Kristina Koffee:

Already like this song based solely on what just transpired here. :D
Avatar 7:50pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

This just in from the BBC about the Pussy Riot protestor :

Avatar 7:53pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...I admit that her being a lovely young & vulnerable looking woman prejudices my feelings about it...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:55pm Rob W:

Happy 50th RR, welcome to the club!
Avatar 7:57pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- Thx Rob! ; They tell me that the fear of the big round # is worse than the reality : / ...
Avatar 7:58pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- Thx Mr. Sosa ! Such a strong performance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:00pm Kristina Koffee:

Yes, thanks to Rolando chichi sosa :D @RR Troubling news. With or without a hunger strike...2 years in the that prison system is more like 10... Unrelated: Happy birthday!
Avatar 8:04pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Thx KK!
...Russia's adjustment after the fall of the USSR is understandable - but Bad Economy too often leads to fascistic Nationalism, almost anywhere (as WWII followed the Depression) - & whatever Putin's accomplishments for his country - he's an ex-KGB turd (if I may so boldly editorialize)...
Avatar 8:10pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- & as an American, I'm not saying the U.S. government is beyond critique. I'm just sayin'.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:12pm Kristina Koffee:

"That's the way it's done in the US and that's the way it's done in Russia" sums it all up for me. Not defending him in any way whatsoever but his cavalier attitude is entertaining to say the least.
Avatar 8:14pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- I wouldn't say I'm 'entertained' by it - any more than Duhbya 'entertained' me - but forgive me for getting Political in a Cultural zone here...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:20pm Kristina Koffee:

@RR Speaking as someone from the Eastern Bloc... culture amounts for a lot but not everything. Some things are universal. It's all good, brother. I'm just here for the ride.
Avatar 8:22pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- Blessings, KK ; you're the one brings the insight that one year in those conditions is really like 10...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:29pm Kristina Koffee:

Take five, but five or what?
Avatar 8:32pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- altho' the U.S.A. has kept people who may not be dangerous for much more than one year in Guantanamo - & other places - w/out due process...just to be fair, & @ risk of prolonging political theme...
- I love hearing tabla & sitar & Indian music & influences; almost think that's too cliche/post-hippie for World Music aficionados - oh well !...
...w/ Indian music, could be 'Take Sixteen' maybe : ) ...
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 8:33pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Gosh, another TSP almost done. How time flies!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:43pm Kristina Koffee:

@Ken really, how the time flies. a mere 3 hours. :(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45pm Rob W:

How time flies... how did Revolution Rabbit and I get to be 50 - ? Ah well...
Avatar 8:48pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I was born almost exactly when the term 'Beatlemania' was coined. I always say I wasn't coming out until they arrived !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49pm Kristina Koffee:

@RobW Truly believe that your attitude is all that counts. Lots of friends younger than me and you scared to death every birthday. No way to live. Thanks again for a great show.
Avatar 8:49pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

..as a birth-order baby, I've always felt mentally five - so perhaps a simple decimal error - ?!?!...
Avatar 8:51pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- Rob - a flawless three hours. As Ever - Thanks for bringing us the World. Really.
Avatar 8:54pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...as Billy Bragg says - we're Badder than we used to be !
