"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot." (Visit homepage.)

Everybody used to love to bash Lou's solo work, especially in the early years, but it's a lot of fun to hear all this early stuff... the studio tracks John has played are a lot of the same ones I would pick, and while it ain't the VU, it's fun to hear his '74 band, a real period piece, kinda easy listening compared to the intensity of the early-mid period Velvets...
  8:29am
sara:

thank you john and lou rip
Avatar 8:30am
northguineahills:

Rob hit the nail right there.
  8:34am
Nick:

Yeah, it's funny how funky the band sounds.
Avatar 8:38am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I'm certainly enjoying it. Hey - the 70s were the 70s.
...While well-steeped in my VU boxed set & stuff - to be embarrassingly honest - I still don't know a lot of Lou solo things - they remain 'legendary' to me in that they're often referenced but not played...

Rob W:

Woke up too late to hear it live, but Katie and I DEFINITELY will be going to the archives later to check Nachum's John Allen Radio Theatre performance as Barbara - egads!
  8:45am
Jack:

Actully heard the solo stuff first, prompted me to go back to the Velvets, always thought it was great stuff!

Jack:

Just got in for the end of the live set, good set sounded like, have to go back to the archive as well.

Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

..I know some of the later solo stuff - 'New York' & such were pretty widely distributed, & I got 'Street Hassle' - but I still never heard 'Berlin' fergawdsake!...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:50am
George of Troy:

Thanks for this, John. You did it up right.

kind of you, george. so much lou to go around

Mike East:

Exploring Lou reed solo work is always so exciting cuz I never know what I'm getting. Could be awful could be great, but always a unique voice. I've always given him the benefit of the doubt because of the vu (much like solo Beatles album's). I'm glad there's still so much for me to explore.
