Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:36pm Jeff Golick:

Headed there this weekend...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:38pm Doug Schulkind:

For the past 50 years, I thought I was there. Learned just yesterday that, apparently, I wasn't. Story to come...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39pm Jeff Golick:

That's not you in the photo, Doug, 35th from the left, 461st row?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40pm Doug Schulkind:

No, that's the OTHER 2-year-old Doug.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:43pm Doug Schulkind:

He was a real jerk.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46pm Jeff Golick:

I can tell. He seems unimpressed by the proceedings.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:47pm Jeff Golick:

In fact: is he...NAPPING?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:47pm Jeff Golick:

(Speaking of, guess who's bored at work.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:49pm Doug Schulkind:

I am not bored at not work.
Avatar 5:50pm glenn:

ooh ooh. i can guess. is it noam chomsky?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51pm Jeff Golick:

Probably so, glenn, probably so.
Avatar 5:51pm glenn:

or maybe bud selig.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:52pm Jeff Golick:

Steve Ballmer.
Avatar 5:52pm glenn:

i gotta confess, roy buchanan's version of hey good lookin' is my fave by far.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:55pm Gary:

That's a lotta ppl
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:56pm Jeff Golick:

Great reggae cover lead-in!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:56pm Jeff Golick:

(Don't make me spell it.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm Doug Schulkind:

Party ppl in the house!

@Jeff Golick
What?! This isn't the original?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:58pm Jeff Golick:

I think the original is by Blondie.
Avatar 6:00pm northguineahills:

I'm mildly annoyed at work, but not too annoyed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:04pm Jeff Golick:

Gotta be honest: if given the same choice, there's a 99% chance I AM YOUR FATHER.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05pm Doug Schulkind:

Why did you lie to me, Poppa Jeff?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:06pm Jeff Golick:

Join the dark side and I'll tell you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:06pm Doug Schulkind:

The "FEPC" you may hear referenced in several of these speeches is referring to the Fair Employment Practices Commission: en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar 6:07pm glenn:

also, the dark side has cookies.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:07pm Parq:

Sigh. I know the feeling. My parents also claimed to have been there. Turns out they were actually at a Slappy White gig at the Royal Theater in Baltimore. Their confusion is understandable, I suppose.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:08pm Doug Schulkind:

Lewis said "Eastland" there (as in racist Mississippi U.S. Senator James Eastland), not "Islam."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm Jeff Golick:

John Lewis is such a freakin stud. Then, as now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm Gary:

Ha, I totally heard "Islam"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm Doug Schulkind:

@Parq
It's like the person I met here in Pittsburgh who said, "I was in New York during 9/11, too." It turns out she was in White Plains.
Avatar 6:10pm northguineahills:

My parents would have been in HS in WV in 1963. My mother's school district had no minority students, my father's had 1.
Avatar 6:10pm glenn:

hey, is that where jim morrison got the "we want our freedom and we want it now" line?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:11pm Gary:

"All of the forces of Islam will not stop this revolution" :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:11pm Doug Schulkind:

@NGH
In West Virginia, I thought a minority was someone with a high school education. OH I KID!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:11pm Doug Schulkind:

Avatar 6:11pm Matt from Springfield:

Here's to True Freedom, Congressman Lewis (toast).

Evenin' Doug and Drummers! Let's fulfill the Dream in every way we can!
Avatar 6:12pm Matt from Springfield:

I surprised to hear on the news that Mr. Lewis is actually the last surviving speaker of the March on Washington [for Jobs and Freedom]. Though I guess even he is up in years now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm Doug Schulkind:

I read that, too, Matt. Many of the participants dies in the early '90s I just learned.
Avatar 6:14pm northguineahills:

That's not far from the truth, Doug.
Avatar 6:19pm Matt from Springfield:

A CORE speech of this march.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:19pm Doug Schulkind:

Pittsburgh is scarily close to WV.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:20pm Doug Schulkind:

Seeing what happened to C.O.R.E. in the hands of Roy Innis was so utterly depressing and revolting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:20pm Jeff Golick:

Birmingham, 1963: www.wnyc.org...
Avatar 6:21pm northguineahills:

Pittsburgh was where we would fly to when visiting relatives in WV. Then, a long ass drive.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:21pm Doug Schulkind:

Robert Zimmerman next.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:24pm Doug Schulkind:

Nice to hear James Farmer namecheck William L. Moore, the white postal carrier from Baltimore who went on a one-person march through the South carrying a sandwich-board sign reading "Equal rights for all" & "Mississippi or Bust." Moore was shot dead on his solo march just 70 miles in.

Moore was assassinated just a few months before the march, in April.
  6:25pm ?:

Never found Joan's harmony worked with Zimmy's voice.
Avatar 6:26pm Matt from Springfield:

Woooo! Old school Rob Zimm with Miss Baez!
I just saw Joan this summer at Wolf Trap--she doesn't hit high notes as high as she used to, but she's still GOT IT! Great singer and performer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27pm Doug Schulkind:

"Pawn in the Game" was a controversial choice because it largely absolves Medgar Evers' murderer (Brian De La Beckwith) as a poor white ignorant being using by the elite power structure.
Avatar 6:27pm Matt from Springfield:

@Doug: "Innis was elected National Chairman of CORE in 1968, and has held the position ever since." That in itself is an "Ick!", horrified even more to learn he's turned their good name into a right-wing lobby...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm Doug Schulkind:

@Matt
Back in the '80s, Innis was lobbying FOR the apartheid regime in South Africa. I feel dirty just typing that sentence.
Avatar 6:29pm Matt from Springfield:

"Only A Pawn In Their Game", still rings true to this day.

You aren't forgotten, Mr. Moore. "Even if you are a minority of one, the truth is the truth."
Avatar 6:30pm Matt from Springfield:

@Doug: Purell bottle held up to my monitor for ya!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36pm Gary:

Whoa, seriously, Doug? Where can I read about the rights issues around the MLK speech?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36pm Parq:

Turning it up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:37pm Doug Schulkind:

Just start Googling, Gary. Here is something I found: motherboard.vice.com...
Avatar 6:37pm Matt from Springfield:

Rev Dr, the floor is yours.
May the future also be yours.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:37pm Doug Schulkind:

Up to 11, Parq.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:39pm Doug Schulkind:

What happens to a Promissory Note deferred? Does it dry up like democracy in the dark?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:39pm Gary:

EM motherf*cking I?
Avatar 6:40pm northguineahills:

No Mahalia Jackson?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm Jeff Golick:

Ew: "In 2009, EMI Publishing became the administrator of the King copyright, after a deal the music publishing giant struck with the King family for an undisclosed sum."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41pm Doug Schulkind:

Max Roach named a song and later a political movement "Now Is the Time."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41pm Doug Schulkind:

@NGH
Keep your seat belt fastened.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:42pm Parq:

I can't adequately express the banality of the document I am working on while listening to this. The contrast is jarring.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:47pm Doug Schulkind:

That Facebook message alert tone you just heard WAS ON THE ORIGINAL RECORDING!
Avatar 6:48pm Matt from Springfield:

Maybe John Lewis was posting a live tweet of the speech!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm Jeff Golick:

I just thought it was someone checking in on Foursquare.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm Jeff Golick:

"even...Mississippi"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm Doug Schulkind:

"...Every hill and molehill of Mississippi..." Amazing.
Avatar 6:52pm Matt from Springfield:

Actual Bic lighter here. Lit. For these most illuminating words.

Boys and girls, THAT is how it's done.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:52pm Jeff Golick:

**mic drop**
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm Doug Schulkind:

Next up is the brilliant architect of the March and the much of the Movement. Unsung hero.
Avatar 6:55pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Methinks this shall be a Spiro Agnew-free show?
Avatar 6:56pm Matt from Springfield:

Bayard Rustin! And A. Philip Randolph!
Everyone knows about MLK, fewer know about these men. They should.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm Jeff Golick:

What's astonishing to me is how the request is for America to merely live up to its own promises and stated ideals/rights. Nothing beyond what is clearly already granted, if our founding documents are to be taken at face value.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm Doug Schulkind:

This is an all-nattering nabobs zone, Kenzo. But you knew that.
Avatar 6:58pm kat330:

Just saying to Philo here what a truly amazing orator King was.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:59pm Doug Schulkind:

The FBI released a photo of Rustin meeting with King while the latter was taking a bath. Trying to smear the men as homosexuals, which, of course, Rustin was openly.

Something J. Edgar had intimate knowledge of, of course.
Avatar 6:59pm Matt from Springfield:

@Jeff: The Haitian Revolution shortly after the Constitution actually sapped much of America's revolutionary vigor. When whitey gets scurred, the shit always hits the fan (observe...)
Avatar 7:00pm Matt from Springfield:

Indeed, Kat! Indeed no other words to describe! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:01pm Doug Schulkind:

The very best of evenings to you, kat330 and Philo, too!
Avatar 7:01pm kat330:

Beautiful language delivered powerfully and beautifully—the very definition of a masterful orator.
Avatar 7:02pm kat330:

Howdy, Doug and all! Thanks for this program!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:03pm Doug Schulkind:

My sublime pleasure, kat and all.
Avatar 7:03pm jk:

evening Doug, play as long as you like of course! Roque hasn't arrived yet, or so I'm telling everyone

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:05pm Jeff Golick:

Past...isn't even past.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:05pm Parq:

Wonderful. Inspiring. Okay, enough of that, back to skronk, hillbilly and mambo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:06pm Parq:

Firefox's spellcheck dictionary includes "hillbilly". The wonder of it all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:06pm Jeff Golick:

Thanks, Doug! And all Marchers, then and now, there and not.
Avatar 7:06pm Matt from Springfield:

Thanks Doug!
The Dream goes as far, as you will take it! Take it far, people!
Avatar 7:07pm northguineahills:

Thanks Doug! Awesome!
