Tongue salad is just one of the many
culinary treasures that await Edward
Snowden in Mother Russia (and our DJ
in Brighton Beach).

Programming of music from Russia and ex-USSR countries and regions during this program does not suggest we agree with the Russian government's policies on same-sex relationships (which of course we despise) and many, many, other issues. Snowden's ironic exile to a land of limited free speech is simply a good excuse to play a lot of ex-Soviet stuff that's been sitting around, and share some new discoveries from our most recent pilgrimage to Brighton Beach!

My current favorite shop for finding music from Russia and the former USSR in Brighton Beach is RBC Video, a large two-floor book, video and cd shop at 269 Brighton Beach Avenue. There are dollar bins outside the shop and on the ground floor, plus popular selections downstairs. If you walk up the spiral staircase and through the large Russian book selection to the back of the second floor, you'll find more esoteric Russian cds - indie rock, electronic, experimental, vintage pop, folk music, some regional sounds, etc. RBC's English language site for mail-order (or for a little research ahead of your visit) is http://bukinist.com/NewPop.asp.

Avatar 6:15pm Ike:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:17pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...I have to be reminded of PBS' SoundTracks: Music Without Borders episode 'A MAn Like Putin'... :
www.pbs.org...
Avatar 6:21pm fleep:

Got a Latvian in the next room (conceived there, born here), busy playing Bejeweled Twist. Any Riga rock in your sack?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:24pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...& the excellent & fun 'How the Beatles Rocked the Kremlin' :

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm Rob Weisberg:

Good evening dear listeners, thanks for tuning in. Ike, the tongue salad is from the buffet at Brighton Bazaar, 1007 Brighton Beach Ave (between Coney Island Ave & Brighton 11th St)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- any PussyRiot on the schedule - ? : P
...I think Ken played them & I was surprised how tight they were - thot they might be all political & no chops
...that's not 'Folk' tho'
...☆ing 'Mother Earth! Father Sky!' puts a little ☆ inside the big one: a metaphor for something??...
  6:36pm Mark K:

Great show so far Rob!
  6:38pm Barba Yiorgi's Overseer:

Huun Huur is the perfect music for supervising 2 crazy Greek musicians moving a massive vinyl collection up 2 flights of stairs!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41pm Rob W:

Vinyl? Did somebody say vinyl?
  6:42pm Barba Yiorgi's Overseer:

Yes, we're that old. And close enough to Williamsburg to hang up a record store sign and make some money!
Avatar 6:45pm Ike:

Never been to Brighton Bazaar, how is it? The so-called "Korean" carrot salad at Nargis Cafe is excellent. That's a great Uzbek place on Coney Island Ave. but it gets really packed with Russians.
Avatar 6:47pm Ike:

(Or at least I presume they're Russian. Not actually sure. I think Uzbek food is popular in Russia these days.)
Avatar 7:00pm Chris M.:

sounding great, Rob! would love to hear this band with Andy Breckman singing about being a tooth fairy!
  7:01pm Steve-O:

Hey Rob.....our very own Andy actually OWNS a record label? I didn't know that.....how very interesting. =)
  7:02pm Steve-O:

Hey guys, wanna hear a joke?

In America, you sing song.....But in Soviet Russia, song sings YOU. =p
  7:04pm Steve-O:

Rob, let us sing more melodies for Mother Russia! =)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...this Ukrainian knockout informed me today she just returned from there, & there are 'too many apricots' there right now...
  7:34pm Robert:

Is Mahwah the midpoint of the weighted vectors of your radiator sites? It's plausible that it would be.
  8:03pm Robert:

test
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:08pm Rob W:

Mahwah - pretty random choice geographically speaking... it's on the north side of the range...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- delightful as ever Rob!
  9:00pm Steve-O:

Great show today, as usual, Rob.....Long live the Rodina! LOL. =D
Avatar 9:18pm Ike:

Very late response, but I presume Robert meant all 3 signals. Indeed, in spots around there, you can pick up all three. 91.1, 90.1, 91.9.

Anyhows, nifty show, Rob!
