It's an Afro-Brazilian Drum assault, New York Style!

Maracatu is super-high-powered parade drumming from Northeast Brazil with deep African roots. Maracatu has caught on outside Brazil too. Maracatu NY leader Scott Kettner was mentored by Maracatu Nação Estrela Brilhante - a famous group from Recife, Brazil. Estrela Brilhante tours the US for the first time this summer (with another Scott Kettner band, Nation Beat).

The tour includes free Lincoln Center Out of Doors events Thursday August 1st (open rehearsal on the plaza, 6 pm) and Friday August 2nd (Damrosch Bandshell concert, joined by Big Chief Monk Boudreaux & the Golden Eagles from New Orleans, 7 pm); plus workshops in New York August 3rd and 4th.

Maracatu NY is raising financial support for its musical mentors with a Kickstarter campaign.

Maracatu NY has its own big plans for this summer - a new cd called "Baque do Brooklyn" comes out in July. The record release party is at Littlefield, 622 DeGraw Street in Brooklyn on July 26.

Maracatu NY is also a teaching ensemble: Maracatu drumming classes (twenty dollar fee per session) are held Saturdays 3-5 pm at Gowanus Arts Building, 295 Douglass St, Brooklyn. You can join a class whether or not you have any previous drumming experience.

Info on the cd, classes, Maracatu history and more at - see http://www.maracatuny.com/.

Massive thanks to our Illustrious Engineers Rob Christiansen and Glenn Luttman!
