good evening, folks. did you know that there's a gull in scotland which projectile vomits acid to keep predators at bay? that's quite an asset...

Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- yes - one week on Ken's program the subject came up of birds that vomit on you as a defense when they feel threatened. Just the thot I wanted to wake up to - after noting the pleasure of the morning birdsong out my window...

Maybe don't stick your head out of the window. Or, maybe do, and report back.

It would be fun to be able to vomit at will. I suppose you'd need to eat constantly to make sure you have the food available in your stomach.

struck me as one of those "isn't nature wonderful" moments. there are some nicer things in the doco i'm watching, i suppose. although i won't even start on the "guga hunt"...

- inevitable in High School bands they got that slightly out of tune w/ each other sound
- but pretty damned together for a *Junior* High band!
...you can just picture the instructor's moves when conducting the quiet bit w/ just beats & flute...

A column of women
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:10am
fred:

The country was Mongolia, and there's no throat singing involved, as most of these are in the long song style (urtiin duu). Byambajargal was a student of Norovbanzad, who you played in a past show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:10am
maestroso:

Yes! I had to order one of Sa's cds. Hasn't arrived yet (from Hong Kong).
Avatar 8:19am
Jason Elbogen:

Thanks Fred. A column of women? Wow... I'm getting everything wrong this morning.

But I like 'Column of Women' better.

I always get confused about the origin/locales of throat singing, because the first one I heard was Sainkho Namtchlak--and I had pretty much no idea where 'Tuva' was. (this was before the internet, ya know)
Avatar 8:23am
ausmanx:

you were right to be confused about Tuva, it doesn't really exist, it's a Western construct devised for the purpose of marketing throat singers...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24am
fred:

There is a lot of throat singing in Mongolia (it's called khoomii there), but I just like the long song better. It's not common outside Mongolia, the only thing close to it I could find was Tibetan
