Like that Max Headroom pirate broadcast?

Somebody on FMU, maybe Jesse, played the original real IBM talking computer tape upon which HAL is based.

BadGuyZero:

"The Max Headroom broadcast signal intrusion was a television signal hijacking in Chicago, Illinois, on the evening of November 22, 1987. It is an example of what is known in the television business as broadcast signal intrusion. The intruder was successful in interrupting two television stations within three hours. Neither the hijacker nor the accomplices have ever been found or identified."

Here's a clip of it: www.youtube.com...

www.youtube.com... this is his first intrusion, not so interesting, but to think about it, he should've been hanged by the balls just for doing this one... I wish that guy would reveal his identity someday

What would you need to do that?

I was talking to someone within the past few months - it might have been another volunteer during the marathon - who saw the Doctor Who intrusion when it happened. They said it freaked him out then and still freaks him out when he's reminded of the incident.

@amEdeo: First you devote a good portion of your programme to an unbridled attack on the new "Star Trek"offering, which is doing very well lat the box office despite your colleague's "anger," and now you seem to have neglected to illustrate your playlist page with a well chosen GIF as per....Oh wait. I see them now, I apologise for accusing you of neglect. But you really should not form opinions about theatrical works that you have as yet not experienced for yourself. Many people missed the original release of 2001: A Space Odyssey because they "heard it was stupid." I'm surprised that a gentleman of your discriminating taste would form such an opinion from second-hand "criticisms." But that Joe Strummer number is a sentimental old favourite of mine, and a very pleasing start to the musical (i.e. not critical) section of this morning's proceedings. Rock on!

Cumberbatch, my old rival... how long must this cat and mouse, Moriarty and Holmes, Tango and Cash, routine continue? You must know that by now I would never make it that easy on any project of yours. Only once we have concluded this ballet dance of devilish deceptions will the sandwiches be made and the Kubricks removed from the kitchen. Rock all the casbahs!

@amEdeo: I confess I'm confused. May I inquire as to who or what are "Tango" and "Cash"?
Avatar 3:53am

Walker was an Alex Cock film. Strummer also did stuff for the soundtracks to other Cox films, most notably "Sid & Nancy" and "Straight To Hell" [a film in which he also starred].

When I was in high school there was a pirate radio station in the neighborhood run by someone who called themselves "Hard Harry." He used a Leonard Cohen song as his theme song and played a bunch of college/modern rock tunes.

It's on Netflix streaming, if you have access to that. I think you can probably find it on YouTube as well.
Avatar 4:29am
BadGuyZero:

Ooh...it's streaming on Netflix. The movie that showed up beneath it in the search results is called "Dead Heat" and stars Treat Williams and Joe Piscopo. Vincent Price is in it too. Eighty-three minute running time. I guess I'll be live tweeting that one in the near future.

Is there a strong chance that I'll become totally obsessed with Toynbee tiles? I was obsessed with numbers stations for a couple of years after I found out about them.
Avatar 5:12am
amEdeo:

Yes, it is already happening to me and I am fairly certain I know all there really is to know about them.
Avatar 5:16am

"Timecop" was better than I expected it to be.

I'll let you know whether or not I'll be going down a rabbit hole after watching that Toynbee doc.
Avatar 5:16am
amEdeo:

What are Numbers Stations?
Avatar 5:20am
BadGuyZero:

Numbers stations are shortwave radio transmissions that generally contain an automated voice reading a series of numbers. They're believed to have been used during the Cold War to send messages to spies. There are several secretive online groups devoted to finding and studying them.

I got into them because I love cryptography and some of the transmissions are extremely creepy-sounding.
