"ft." Mala Rodríguez--i.e., "featuring," as in Prof. Elemental entry?

Irwin sounds so smoove today, doesn't he? Irwin, you sound so smoove!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:22pm

Yes, Laura, that's my take on "ft.".

Hey, whattya think, it should be "Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers", not "Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers", right?

An unintentional click on the comments page popped up this for me (and now, for you):

Smoove
Smoove is a French company that designs, manufactures and markets products related to bike-sharing. The company produces lightweight bike stands that require virtually no civil engineering and no electricity. The lock is on the bicycle, situated in the fork. It secures the bike in the stations and outside the stations with an auto-winding cable.
Avatar 3:26pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:27pm
Irwin:

LL: I consistentized the "ft."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:28pm
Alison Porchnik:

rrg - what a coincidence. The city just annexed about 50 feet of parking space on my street to install a bike-sharing station. Since I am a fan of bicycling and don't own a car I shouldn't mind, but visiting friends have to park, and parking is already at such a premium here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:28pm
rrg:

Well...okay. At least it's consistent now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm
rrg:

The band name "Peter Bjorn & John" bugs me. That's what they call themselves but there should be some commas in there.
Avatar 3:30pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Martin Newell!
  3:30pm
Laura L:

@rrg, do they ever play on their own as "The Jazz Messengers"? I think even if they do I would keep it lowercase, as it's a definite article that is part of a band title. Thank heavens for the consistentization that just occurred!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:33pm
rrg:

Yeah, I think that just about everyone (except Mr. Bloomberg and a few bikers) is pissed off at the appropriation of already-scarce car parking space for bicycles.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm
rrg:

We had this discussion before, Laura, and you more or less agreed with me. This flip-flopping hurts.

I'm sticking with upper-casing the definite (and indefinite) articles in band names for now.
Avatar 3:36pm
Michael:

If the bike program there works as ours does in Boston, the bike racks will be gone in the winter and spaces will be back for a while at least. And howdy to Irwin.

Laura - what's your feeling about The Bronx vs. the Bronx? Working in T/the Bronx, I have occasion to write borough's name often was taken to task by some Bronxites for not capitalizing the article, which is traditionally how the name was written. So I went back to The Bronx, even though it wasn't being written that way much at Lehman. But recently I've seen so many inconsistencies, and now it seems even some official Bronx websites and signage have made the switch, either intentionally or unofficially. Being a fan of consistency I've switched back. But I'm also a fan of tradition like the serial comma. What would you do?
  3:41pm
Laura L:

@rrg--I'm being inconsistent, it's awful, isn't it! Must be the dreary weather. I still read "ft." as "feet," and so I want to know how tall S. Jemmett and M. Rodríguez are.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm
rrg:

Yeah, in my own library I usually abbreviate it as "feat." rather than "ft.".

Laura L - how do I explain this to angry Bronxites who insist that because the article is part of the name it should be capitalized (and they have the weight of tradition behind them)? They do have a point. But I like it better with a l/c L.
  3:59pm
Laura L:

@ AP, well, I guess you don't even try, because Bronxites sound like a stubborn lot! Just let them do what they do--the Live and Let Live policy has to go into effect sometimes.

Interesting read.
