Unfortunately, recent changes to my work make it difficult to hang out here and comment often but I can still listen with limited interruptions, so there's that.

@ Doug: PS: "Douggles" rhymes with "Snuggles."

MrFab:

Howdy, Tony, and fellow Coulter-ites. I hear ya, Rich: sometimes I can't even listen to this show. Wish TapeHiss was archived, that Residents-y weirdo pop special from a couple weeks ago looks great.
Avatar 12:13pm
Carmichael:

Sick Dick & the Volkswagens were a fictional band in Thomas Pynchon's The Crying of Lot 49.

Hi Hissers
Avatar 12:14pm

Hey MrFab! I too wish "Tape Hiss" could be archived....

Hey there, Duke!

@ Carmichael: Didn't know about the Pynchon connection!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm

Re: Pynchon: me neither. I just know Sick Dick (...) was a band name friends and I used to joke about all the time. It just stuck.

That book was required reading for my undergraduate degree. Lots of other hippie/music references, as it was written in the late 60s/early 70s.
Avatar 12:25pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Sid: And a bit of the Residents too -- like so many of my fave '80s bands.
Avatar 12:25pm
SID TUBBY:

read some of his Gravity' s Rainbow a few weeks back!
Good stuff and in the DFWallace Infinite Jest kind of category!

Talking of the Residents, can anyone suggest additions to this list of Residents-influenced acts I put up on Rate Your Music: rateyourmusic.com...

@Tony: Steve Reich? Don Van Vliet?

MrFab:

Just checked my blog for old reviews in which I compare bands to the Residents:
- The Chewers
- Philip Stranger
- Potato aka Jerome Van Dinkle
- The Invented Thing Quartet
- X Black Sheep
- Ralph Carney
- Thiaz Itch
- Už Jsme Doma
- The Hathaway Family Plot
- Duo Inmortales
Avatar 1:13pm

Thanks, Fab!! Don't know most of those -- I'll have to look 'em up....

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm
Rich in Washington:

@MrFab: I remember getting lots of label catalogs in the early/mid 80s and tons of bands had press blurbs comparing them to The Residents.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm
Rich in Washington:

Cool lists, both of youse.
I recently picked up that Cromagnon reissue on Jackpot. AT Jackpot, actually.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm
Rich in Washington:

(going through your Sounds Residential list).
Say Tony. Is it true that Freshly Wrapped Candies contains an ex-Resident? Seems like I read it somewhere.
Avatar 1:31pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Rich: Jackpot is kind of a weird reissue label, as they mostly reissue things that have already been reissued and are barely out of print. Not sure about the Freshly Wrapped Resident -- I've heard that too, but....
Avatar 1:32pm
Tony Coulter:

With somewhat better vocals, Sick Dick could have been big, I think (subculturally speaking, of course).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm
Rich in Washington:

I have this weird, maybe not entirely rational dislike for Jackpot. I think that's the one time I've ever bought anything in their store.
Avatar 1:36pm
Tony Coulter:

They're OK, but they feel a bit like a fake record store -- kind of boutique-y.
  1:39pm
MrFab:

Don't know how old Jackpot is, but all the new record stores seem boutique-y. May be the way they have to do it now in this vinyl-as-cool-fashion-object age we're a-livin' in.
Avatar 1:47pm
Tony Coulter:

Not sure how old Jackpot is, but they frequently get name-dropped as Portland's best record store -- which is ridiculous.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm
Rich in Washington:

There are so many incredible record stores in Portland. Jackpot is the most over-rated and overpriced.
Predictably, it was the only Portland store mentioned in Rolling Stone's article on the best record stores in the US.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm
Rich in Washington:

It's sort of a store for dudes that just got into vinyl records and want a 40 dollar reissue to play on their 1,000 turntable.
Avatar 1:49pm
Tony Coulter:

Tops for me in Portland are Exiled, Crossroads, and Little Axe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm
Rich in Washington:

yep. I dig those, too. Those and Clinton Street.
I love Boom Wow for 45s and for their old-timey record love vibe.
Avatar 1:58pm
Tony Coulter:

Coming up next: a sort of mystery tape, from 1980, *probably* by a group called Arcane.
Avatar 2:06pm
northguineahills:

Digging this Arcane.
Avatar 2:08pm
Tony Coulter:

Glad to hear it, NGH! I really wish I could find out something about them. The cover is hand-made, and the cassette has no info at all other than track titles. And the person I bought it from couldn't remember anything about the tape. Get in touch, Arcane (or whoever you are)!
Avatar 2:12pm
Tony Coulter:

By the way, I included a track from this cassette in an old BotB post: blog.wfmu.org... . You can see the cover there.
Avatar 2:14pm
Tony Coulter:

... and the label.
Avatar 2:23pm
Tony Coulter:

To me Arcane sounds a wee bit like early Decayes. Wonder if there could possibly be any connection.
Avatar 🥁 2:39pm

Something just occurred to me: one of the main guys in the Decayes is named Ron Kane = R. Kane = Arcane?!? Maybe!
