news of the week over here was Daft Punk announcing they're going to do global release of their new album at the annual Wee Waa Show, Wee Waa being a small sheep farming town in north west NSW with a population of 2000, about seven hours drive from Sydney. weird

Wow. that sounds awesome ausmanx. I love it when people play in tiny places. Like Alan Parsons playing in my hometown because a Houghton boy sang on one of his albums.

I'll say I don't mind the Dead. I do own Oaxamaxao which I dig. I feel they're kinda lightweight in the cosmic psych area. I do enjoy telling people I like the Dead because it typically bums people out.
Avatar 9:55am
Cheri Pi:

I'm cool with it now Tim, now that I can relate to the one song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am
tim from champaign:

I actually think Feedback was my entre too.

I also like telling Dead haters that Black Flag were into the Grateful Dead.
Avatar 9:57am
Cecile:

I don't get bummed out about people liking the Dead. I just don't want to be converted forcibly to liking them, like some of my acquaintances wanted to do.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am
tim from champaign:

Grateful Dead C.

OK, I'm done.
Avatar 9:58am
Cheri Pi:

I'm just into the one song tho- I can't take any of the rest.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am
Andrew Waterloo:

Henry Rollins was in Black Flag, isn't that enough to take away the hero worship?
Avatar 9:59am
Cecile:

Hammerin' Hank has some of the broadest taste of anyone who came up thru punk rock.
Avatar 10:00am
braveness23:

I don't have any contempt for the Dead but like Jimmy Buffet I think they are a phenomena that I just don't "get" and that isn't really driven by the music but by some other sort of bond. I'm on the outside looking in and am content to so hang out somewhere where I do "get it".
Avatar 10:00am
Chris from DC:

Don't mind the Dead, just literally can't understand the people I know who listen to nothing but.
Avatar 10:01am
Cecile:

Chris, right. Or people who just listen to SY. Or Frank Zappa. or....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am

I have liked the Dead since I was a little kid, but never saw any reason to restrict my worldview like so many "Deadheads".
Avatar 10:02am

i think i could favourite just about ev'rything played so far today, but midnight approaches so it's time to leave work... good evening all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am
tim from champaign:

Yep, I'm leery of people who say they dig music but just listen to one narrow aspect of music. Like John Brannon said "There was music before hardcore and music after hardcore."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am
Andrew Waterloo:

I can understand band devotee'ism. It's an identity thing. I just don't understand how loving one band so much doesn't lead to other things.

I still don't get CCR but if they're good enough for my beloved D.Boone & Cecile that's good enough for me.
Avatar 10:06am
Chris from DC:

Andrew, exactly on devotee'ism.
Avatar 10:08am
Cheri Pi:

give me freeform, or give me death.
Avatar 10:09am

most people want fewer choices. Once they stumble across a band that fits them, they don't need to keep exploring.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am

CCR is basically your proto-shoegazer-country music that ocassionally loses it's way and does blues.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am

Alice Coltrane...damn
Avatar 10:10am

Or I see it as a fusion of great roots music overlaid by Fogerty's great plainspoken lyrics.

I find most people are ambivalent about music just as they are ambivalent about sports or politics. But, they're not ambivalent about participating in the conversation so they have their team, their party, and their band and a handful of talking points.
