Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:15pm
G:

It was even all over Brasilian AM radio practically hourly when I lived there in 74. Truly it was the universal earworm of its moment.

Sem Chumbo:

Working in a Top 40 station, locked in the copy office, this thing was in "power rotation!" for weeks. Could not turn the office monitor off.

Doesn't Syklubb fra Hælvete mean something along the lines of knitters from hell Norweigian?
Avatar 3:55pm
Caryn:

@ngh: essentially. Maybe more a "sewing circle from hell".
Avatar 3:58pm
steve:

this is quite the girl group special...

oh, I see it now, I was going w/ my gut's interpretation before letting my brain interfere.

Yes-Afri-Rampo ! They broke up just before their last album was supposed to come out :(

Hey, "Play Misty for Me" just started on tv! DJ-related viewing. Although rather disturbing viewing...

Short Hills Brad:

Takes me back. For the record, 'kore ga mayaku da" means "this is a narcotic". Not a good thing in Japan
Avatar 4:02pm

not a good thing? whats wrong with a narcotic?

Short Hills Brad:

He did not like prison. He said that in prison in Japan, you are supposed to sit there all day and contemplate your crimes. Heck, that's what I do all the time, anyway. Here in my mom's basement.
Avatar 4:07pm
steve:

hmm never knew the bodysnatchers were all female
Avatar 4:09pm

northguineahills:

When I was in the 6th grade in Japan, a classmate of mine was found w/ possession of marijuana, and he and his whole family were deported.
  4:27pm
Short Hills Brad:

Steve, he probably did see midnight express. He lives in Thailand now, and I am guessing he is not trying to become a conossieur (sp?) of prisons.
  4:28pm
Short Hills Brad:

He and his whole family!!! Sounds like big trouble at ASIJ! (ps, do I have to be good at math to post here??)
Avatar 4:29pm
Caryn:

@SHB: if you get a profile, no math is required
Avatar 4:34pm
northguineahills:

Since he was a minor (he was 12), and his father was employed by the US Navy. It's part of the contract the U.S. military has w/ Japan.
Avatar 4:38pm
steve:

dam, thats crazy
Avatar 4:38pm
steve:

yeah, prison isn't all action and synth arpeggios
  4:39pm
Short Hills Brad:

I will have to think up a good profile. Like this: "I am devastatingly good looking, and also good at math."
Avatar 4:41pm
glenn:

huh. i'm also devastatingly good looking, and i don't need math.
Avatar 4:42pm
Caryn:

I'm not particularly good looking, and I have a calculator.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43pm
Sem Chumbo:

@SHBrad: so a Russell Crowe as John Nash type, then?
Avatar 4:44pm
Caryn:

With or without the paranoid schitzophrenia?
Avatar 4:44pm
steve:

man, the Shangri-Las really had some of the best production ever. love that reverb.
Avatar 4:48pm
glenn:

THIRTY SONGS??? that's it?
Avatar 4:50pm
glenn:

well, they're still the greatest girl group ever, and i don't care what diana ross thinks.
Avatar 4:57pm
glenn:

and it kinda makes me wonder why my "best of the shangri-las" c.d. has 25 tracks on it. why not put the other 5 on it and call it "the complete shangri-las"? yeah, answer that, mr. c.d. compiler guy.
Avatar 4:58pm
steve:

i wonder which 5 didnt make it
Avatar 4:59pm
Caryn:

@Steve: the 5 that were not as good as "the best" according to some compiler's opinion
Avatar 5:03pm
glenn:

oh, and neko case does "the train from kansas city", but i'm not sure if she's recorded it.
Avatar 5:04pm
steve:

right... im curious what they are.
Avatar 5:05pm
Carmichael:

Hi li'l dawgies, and hello Hurt and Lisa.
Avatar 5:12pm
Carmichael:

Ha ha! "Kurt".
Avatar 5:15pm
Carmichael:

"With whose music she has long been obsessed" is the correct usage. Since Alison's not here ...
Avatar 5:15pm
Caryn:

@steve: "Wishing Well", "Hate to Say I Told You So", "It's Easier to Cry". "Simon Says", "Simon Speaks", "Twist and Shout", "Shout", "The Boy", "Bull Dog", "So Much in Love", "Goodnight My Love (Pleasant Dreams)" and "You Can't Sit Down" are at least not among the 25 in the "Best of...", so it seems there are more than 30 songs. I'm just saying.
Avatar 5:17pm
glenn:

my c.d. has 25 tracks, but it's an older issue. i got it in 2000. the new c.d. of the same name (and with the same cover) has 17 tracks.
Avatar 5:18pm
steve:

thats funny. my greatest hits CD does have The Boy, Wishing Well, and Bull Dog, but is also missing the rest of those. and the greatest hits LP i have has Twist and Shout, The Boy, and Bulldog.
Avatar 5:19pm
Caryn:

I'm going to check out how many tracks are on the "complete collection".
Avatar 5:20pm
Caryn:

"Complete collection" has 40 songs and 4 ads.
Avatar 5:21pm
Carmichael:

If you purchase THIS collection, you'll get them all (along with a few more): www.youtube.com...
Avatar 5:21pm
glenn:

none of the songs caryn listed above are on my c.d., and there's 12 tracks there, so yeah, there has got to be more than 30.
Avatar 5:22pm
Caryn:

Maybe it's 40, and it was just a slip of the tongue.
Avatar 5:23pm
glenn:

gordon lightfoot is THE MAN! that's all.
Avatar 5:23pm
steve:

bahaha that's hilarious Carmichael
Avatar 5:25pm
Caryn:

Although the "Complete collection" doesn't have "Twist and Shout", but does have some "alternate takes" and live tracks, so hmm...
Avatar 5:28pm
Caryn:

@Carm: hah! Man, I love SCTV...
Avatar 5:28pm
steve:

i think you're right Caryn
  5:38pm

Shakin Ray Levis is freakin awesome! Great show today!

Thank you Lisa MacKinney. Great show Kurt, all round. Thank you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:54pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

So who is labeling those CDs? The same guys that label boxes of fish?
Avatar 5:55pm
northguineahills:

I remember seeing the Shaking Ray Levis open for Derek Bailey at The Church of Existentialism in Atlanta Georgia in 1997. They were amazing!
Avatar 5:56pm
Carmichael:

Thanks Kurt and Lisa!
Avatar 5:56pm
northguineahills:

Thanks for a great show, have a great weekend everyone!
Avatar 5:57pm
glenn:

caryn, i don't know if you saw this a couple days back. bookwormavra.wordpress.com...
Avatar 5:58pm
steve:

great show
Avatar 6:03pm
Caryn:

@glenn: yep, saw it. The Toronto area has been known for white squirrels for a long time.
Oh, and The Shangri-Las' singles total 30 songs (A and B sides included), so maybe that's where the 30 comes from. So, 30 songs on the singles, more songs overall.
