Wait, sorry to show up so early, but was the country song that wound up at 7:55 EST really saying "The Homo and the Rose"? Please tell me I'm just experiencing a fractured pre-shower hearing moment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:08am Doug Schulkind:

That was "hobo," Parq, hobo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:20am Parq:

Yeah, that occurred to me while I was in the shower. But jeez ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:20am Parq:

So ... how's every little thing this morning?
Avatar 8:29am duke:

Finally got to see Searching for Sugar Man last evening. What a great movie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:31am Alex In Illinois:

Good morning. I'm working form home today. We have had some snow here in the Chicago area and I think we're expecting some rain and more snow. Was that a tuba solo we just heard?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45am Doug Schulkind:

Hi Duke and Ill Alex! I loved Searching for Sugar Man, too, though I thought it a bit absurd hearing from all those poor oppressed white South Africans. Saying that it took the music of Rodriguez to show them a path toward freedom was kinda laughable. An enjoyable film nevertheless.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49am Brian in UK:

Hello Doug & apostles.
Avatar 8:50am duke:

I also thought the part about the Rodriguiz albums sparking the SA revolution was over the top. They didn't mention that he was big in Australia either. It also seems like record companies are the biggest pirates.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51am Doug Schulkind:

Brian in UK, you're OK!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51am Brian in UK:

Mississippi find youself another country to be part of. P Ochs.
Avatar 8:51am glenn:

clarence avant sure seems like a douchebag, if you ask me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53am Doug Schulkind:

@duke
I also wished the film had let the songs play longer without interruption. One of the amazing things about the HBO show The Treme is how it lets the music happen up front without needing to quickly fade it under the dialogue. And yeah, glenn, Avant pretty much smeared himself in the movie.
Avatar 8:57am ndbob:

morning Doug and everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00am Doug Schulkind:

Good morning to you, ndbob!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01am Brian in UK:

I love the word lozenge.
Yes fine Doug, been away in the mountains of North Wales. Crystal clear air like I have never seen before. Sublime. Sad to say, just heard of my wife's aunties demise, she lives up there too. Second funeral this year.

Avatar 9:13am dcp:

I wish for 3 feet of snow. there.

Perfect music for my morning Drummer Some, thanks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am Parq:

Speaking of movies the GDS crowd would dig, I saw the Hava Nagila documentary ("Hava Nagila, The Movie") last month. Apolitical to a fault (and kind of in love with suburbia), it is nonetheless filled with good jokes, engrossing musical lore and even controversy (two families are fighting over which one's ancestor wrote the original lyrics). It opens in April, so I'm told.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am Doug Schulkind:

See you at 7pm sharp (ouch), Jesse!

@dcp
OK, you can haz three feet of snow, but then you gotta go dig out my aged parents in Bethesda...
Avatar 9:15am dcp:

What a revoltin' development.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am Jeff Golick:

Howdy Jeff Golick! Hey, you've got a spiffy new D:O RADIO all set for Monday at noon, here on the Drumman Stream!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am Uncle Michael:

The tryptophan is kicking in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am Jeff Golick:

Hey, that's excellent, Doug! Seems like only last week I was saying the very same...

[Apologies to all who might've tuned in expecting a new D:O Radio last week, and instead were treated to a photo of Oscar Gamble and a sub-auditory sadtrombone.wav.]
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am Doug Schulkind:

Uncle Michael, that is funny.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am Jeff Golick:

On the bright (scheduling) side, this Monday marks the first of three (count 'em, 3!) straight D:O shows in a row. </promo>
Avatar 9:28am northguineahills:

@Brian: I played that Phil Ochs song once at a bar (Beauty Bar, 14th st) and it booed and the manager forced me to change the music.
Avatar 9:29am northguineahills:

I suppose there were some Mississippians there, or something.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am Doug Schulkind:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am Brian in UK:

@ El Thatchmo there's one waiting for you in central Istanbul at the Golden Horn.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am Doug Schulkind:

@Jeff
My rule is always... wait for the kid to call home from the office.
Avatar 9:35am glenn:

but what if your mom is a teacher at the same school? that way, the office just has to call her room. not that i would know.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am Doug Schulkind:

BIG TREAT ALERT...BIG TREAT ALERT...

Avatar 9:51am Van in DC:

Good morning Doug...as I first commented earlier, I'm late again, but glad to be in time for this one :)

Yeesh, I missed your greeting at 9:13, Van. Sorry chum! I am always so glad when you're in the scrum.

This Juan Amalbert record was shared at the great Orgy in Rhythm blog a few years back and Mr. Amalbert (actually Emannuel Abdul-Rahim, now) left a very nice comment.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am Doug Schulkind:

Wait, Jeff Golick, I should play you some Ernie K-Doe before you go visit your mother-in-law.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am Doug Schulkind:

Juanderful. Nice.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am Uncle Michael:

@Doug...yes, I was. But like my mother always told me, "if it was a snake, it would have bit you."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am Doug Schulkind:

Big ☆ back atcha, Shaun.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am Doug Schulkind:

Snakes are our friends, Uncle Michael.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am Uncle Michael:

I'm going to defer to Al Wilson on that issue.

Thanks B in B!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am Dominick:

Lovely stuff Doug
Avatar 10:13am duke:

@Uncle I had bad luck with the WFMU android app. It stopped working for me after an android update. The Tunein app works very well for WFMU.
Avatar 10:14am Van in DC:

Somehow I lost the stream for a bit there. Probably just internal network issues at work though.
  10:15am Bob in Charlottesville:

Looks like Spotify has the whole "Louis and the Good Book" album, so I know what I'll be listening to in about 2 hours and 46 minutes.
Avatar 10:16am dcp:

Van: maybe you experienced some temporary deafness...I'd get that checked out..
Avatar 10:17am still b/p:

How the HELL do these jobless days get so mad stuffed with the busy? This morning: Drop-off for muffler repair, pedal home from garage, retrieve something in semi-emergency situation from former workplace to FedEx to former boss out of town...And now a substantial list of things-- good and less good -- to tend at home, including (unpaid) design work, and packing for upcoming overnight and xc ski trip in the woods. AND late for Drummer damn and missed good tracks damn damn poor poor me. That really burns my waffles. And...I just burned my waffles. Rock my soulllllllllll!

hmm. I can see my FMU likes list getting out of control. Might have to look into search capability etc...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am Doug Schulkind:

Have you ever seen the cover to Ornette's album "Crisis"? It features an image of the Bill of Rights set aflame: bit.ly...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am Doug Schulkind:

Drummer Denardo Coleman was already a wise old 13 when this was recorded.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am Uncle Michael:

@duke I'm sorry to hear the Android App is sketchy. I was interested in it for the feature set more than the streaming capability which I now have with either XiiaLive or Orange Squeeze.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am Doug Schulkind:

Favorite current headline: "U.S. Government to Air-Drop Toxic Mice on Snakes."

Just say it with me, toxic mice.
Avatar 10:34am ndbob:

I read about that Doug - quite an intriguing solution to a really nasty problem.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am Artie:

Those mice might be a little annoying, and maybe have some small personality disorders, but isn't it a little judgmental to call them "toxic"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am Dominick:

snakes on everything
Avatar 10:38am dcp:

hmmm...using dead mice to control snakes to stop the extinction of birds. crazy..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am Doug Schulkind:

Only thing worse than a snake is a snake with a spider on it.
Avatar 10:38am Van in DC:

The band, Toxic Mice? :)

Samuel L Jackson in Toxic Mice on a Plane
Avatar 10:39am ndbob:

Seems like a plausible solution to me - we will see
Avatar 10:40am still b/p:

Talk Sick Mice, good name, too.
Avatar 10:42am northguineahills:

Now, if we could just make the snakes become ouroboros, the problem will solve itself.
Avatar 10:43am northguineahills:

that should be ouroboroi (plural)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am Uncle Michael:

Carnivores, herbivores, omnivores and ourobores.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am Doug Schulkind:

The ones in Queens and Brooklyn are outerborough ouroboroi.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am Matt from Springfield:

Greetings Doug, Drummers and/or ouroboroi!
Avatar 10:49am northguineahills:

So, the GTDSers non-Manhattanite NYCers would be our outerborough ouroboroi?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am Uncle Michael:

I need to see the drummhead/ouroboroi venn diagram.
Avatar 10:51am ndbob:

I'd go with - 1928, 1963, 1966
Avatar 10:51am dcp:

do you include music written but not recorded?
Avatar 10:51am dcp:

I'd say right here, right now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am Uncle Michael:

1971 is my go-to. This is not a considered go-to, merely an observed one.
Avatar 10:53am still b/p:

Line just delivered in a motion picture in my home background here:
"There's no such thrill in the world as making money."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am Matt from Springfield:

@UM: Figurative ouroboroi probably a bit: "The Ouroboros often represents self-reflexivity or cyclicality, especially in the sense of something constantly re-creating itself, the eternal return, and other things perceived as cycles that begin anew as soon as they end" A lot of us are like that.

As for literally, about 3% of Drummers exclusively ouroboroi, representing 35% of all actual ouroboroi.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am Doug Schulkind:

Actual name: John Fred Gourrier
Avatar 10:55am ndbob:

John Fred's best record!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am Matt from Springfield:

@still b/p: There is nothing quite as wonderful as money!, says Monty Python.

I'm surprised DJs haven't played that at Marathon time. I wish I had 40,000 French francs in my fridge to give to WFMU.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am Alex In Illinois:

I hope nobody's family cat or dog eats any of those toxic mice. I also hope no Owls get them either.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am Matt from Springfield:

He's in the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame, bout time we heard something less poppy and more bluesy from John Fred. This is probably his first love.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am Uncle Michael:

Was the name "the Playboys" interchangeable with "the Playboy Band" or do they mark different eras in John Fred's oeuvre?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am Doug Schulkind:

Oh hey Matt from Springield!!
Avatar 10:58am northguineahills:

I was thinking about that too, Alex. How do they prevent unintended consequences?
Avatar 10:58am still b/p:

@ mfs - Must report I DON'T have ninety-thousand pounds in my pajamas. Will update as necessary.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am Alex In Illinois:

I am not sure about disqualifying the years before recorded music. I would have loved to have attended one of Louis Moreau Gottschalk's concerts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am Doug Schulkind:

@Alex in Illinois
I think the snakes have eaten all the owls. It's in Guam that the toxic mice are being air-dropped.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am Uncle Michael:

Is that 90,000 pounds in your pajamas or are you just happy to see me?
Avatar 11:00am dcp:

that's the big problem with dealing with "invasive" species--sometimes the cure ends up being another problem. Quite often in fact.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am Matt from Springfield:

'ey 'o, Doug!
Avatar 11:00am ndbob:

I've talked to people in Guam about the snake problem - which is really extreme - unintended consequences can always happen - but the ecosystem has been destroyed by the snakes
Avatar 11:01am still b/p:

Ah, hard currency.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am Matt from Springfield:

Thanks for your voluntary updates, still b/p.
Avatar 11:02am dcp:

yeah, in this case it looks like they gotta go for something. It's just that the history of dealing with invasive species has not been all that positive. Very fuckin tricky. Loads of variables to consider.
Avatar 11:03am northguineahills:

They should drop some toxic gators in the Everglades to erode the numbers of Burmese pythons.
Avatar 11:03am ndbob:

True dcp
Avatar 11:03am Van in DC:

Just wanted to say Aaaaahhh!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am Alex In Illinois:

For some reason, I was afraid that the mouse drop was going to be in Florida, since there is a python problem. The Florida legislature has had a lot of difficulty passing python control laws, because of the exotic pet industry lobby. The also have some bizarre anti-gun safety gag laws, but I don't want to open up another can of worms or snakes here.
Avatar 11:05am dcp:

killer set!
Avatar 11:06am ndbob:

The python issue in Florida, is an annoyance, but nothing like the snake problem in Guam, so hopefully there won't be an overreaction

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am Matt from Springfield:

Yes, Singles File!

Huh, surprised someone else was allowed to call himself "Stan Getz" then--maybe he didn't have permission! Illicit 45!
Avatar 11:11am northguineahills:

The snake problem in Guam has had a century to fester (that, and it's a large island), while the python problem in FL is only a decade +. Although there are plenty of other invasive species reigning havoc in FL.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am Doug Schulkind:

Hi Lucy in mmmmmm Brooklyn!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am Matt from Springfield:

@UM: Who will star in Toxic Gators?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am Doug Schulkind:

Full Service Doug! Just when you noticed he posted the B-sides to digital 45s, you look up and see he just cleaned your windshield too!
Avatar 11:17am Carmichael:

Good morning, Doug and acolytes. Speaking of documentaries, I've seen a handful in the last few days: "Who is Harry Nillson", "The Passing Show - The Life & Music of Ronnie Lane", and "You're Gonna Miss Me [Roky Erickson]".

Avatar 11:20am Carmichael:

That's next, UM, followed by the Rodriguez bio. If you haven't seen Genghis Blues yet, I highly recommend it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am Doug Schulkind:

Anyone know anything about the Fountainairs? Singer sounds about seven years old.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am Uncle Michael:

Skip the excreble Replacements doc...bate your breath for the Big Star
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am Matt from Springfield:

Morning Carm!
With those 40,000 French francs in your fridge, and a possible 90,000 Pounds in our pajamas, the Marathon should start off strong.

It's a typo, really the Mountaineers. Recorded with oxygen at 7000metres.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am Doug Schulkind:

WICKED COOL SONG ALERT...WICKED COOL SONG ALERT...
The track after this next one from Burning Spear is on the Jamaican Blues compilation offered in today's Mining the Audio Motherlode. A killer set of early Jamaican rarities. Here's that link again: bit.ly...

Avatar 11:50am still b/p:

I was afraid for some reason that was going to be talk-over music, but ah, no, it goes free on its way on its own, ah, yes, yes, good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am Brian in UK:

You could smell the Fela groove or should I say inhale.
Avatar 11:52am Shaun:

Favving like a muvverfavver.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am Uncle Michael:

Speaking of Fela and thinking of Fela and Ginger Baker...that Ginger Baker doc looks like one to watch for too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am Matt from Springfield:

Wooooo! Afrika 70!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am Matt from Springfield:

@Brian: Gonna roll me some Fela and light up...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am Doug Schulkind:

At 2am this morning, I couldn't decide whether to play this or "Sorrow, Tears & Blood." Finally chose this just because it was LONGER!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56am Uncle Michael:

This is basting my booty.
Avatar 11:57am still b/p:

There's satisfaction in making the nearly invisible gray-on-gray star become BOLD on the playlist for oneself. "I have done this."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57am Brian in UK:

I married twenty wimmin once, then I woke up.
Go Matt.
@UM Ginger is an arrogant twat.

Avatar 12:12pm Van in DC:

Thanks Doug! I missed the first & last parts darn it. Boss called me to his office suddenly...
  3:07pm Bob in Charlottesville:

I listened to the whole "Louis and the Good Book" album. Most of it has a hokey studio chorus, but the last two "Elder Eatmore's Sermon" ones are pretty wild, especially the "Throwing Stones" one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm Doug Schulkind:

For years I just had MP3s of those two sermons. I've grown to love the rest of the hokiness, too.
