"Dear Doug Schulkind,

We thought you'd like to know that eligible songs from "The Asch Recordings, Vol. 1-4" by Guthrie, Woody, a CD you purchased in 1999, are being added to your Cloud Player library. This means that high-quality MP3 versions of these songs are available for you to play or download from Cloud Player for FREE. You can find your songs in the "Purchased" playlist. Please note that some songs from the above CD are not eligible for this feature and may not be available in your Cloud Player library."

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am Doug Schulkind:

@Glenn
You are not incorrect that there is a particular model of guitar that is called a parlor guitar, but (according to many sources, including the liners to "Rural Parlor Guitar"), it is also a style and repertoire of a certain style of finger-picked instrumental playing.

@Tom Shad
I don't have any Butch M cued up for today's show. I am not much of a "memorial" programmer, though I dearly loved Butch and his music. (That said, some times I DO play music of a recently departed artist. Not sure what leads me to do or not. I just follow my heart.)

@Jeff Golick

I guess a part of me feels unhappy with the opportunistic aspect to memorial broadcasts. (Though of course I applaud WKCR's amazing efforts.) I contradict myself because I sometimes do it. With Pete LaRoca most recently and Marion Brown last year. I guess if I just feel compelled to do it, I will feature a dearly departed artist. Butch Morris is surely that.

I never feel opportunistic about honoring a departed artist. In fact, it would be easier not to bother. They all have birthdays every year but they only die once and often, attention should be paid. Usually it's the acknowledgement and one track....just to say it matters. That's how it is for me.

As far as I know, she's the only one that left the "church" but didn't leave town.
Avatar 11:02am Matt from Springfield:

@UM: Actually that's what I thought you meant.
Avatar 11:02am ndbob:

Hey kat!

Hey, Matt and Hey, Bob! Having trouble with the stream on my Grace. I'm Grace-less...
Avatar 11:05am kat330:

Wow, it's like a trio arriving for rehearsal the same time -- Matt, Carm & me. :)
Avatar 11:06am ndbob:

heya Carmichael!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am Jeff Golick:

@Doug: maybe it's because you all are the only ones who can still spell Pittsberg correctly?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am Alex In Illinois:

I think there are other WBC apostates. At the Reason Rally in D. C. last spring, there was a son of Phelps who had left, speaking about being brough up in an environment of fear and hate.
Avatar 11:08am Matt from Springfield:

@kat: Then what should we be called? CarmaKat Matt?
Maybe not a band name, but 'twould work for the label name...
Avatar 11:09am kat330:

Carmatkat?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am Doug Schulkind:

Hiya kat330!!

Did I really type "booksores"? Sheesh. That further proves that the list is wrong wrong wrong.
Avatar 11:10am VA(n):

I'm just Van
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am Doug Schulkind:

Hey Carmichael!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am Alex In Illinois:

Maybe Pittsburgh is so literate because most of the industries have shrunk with the exception of the University communities. And maybe many of these readers are students who find it more economical to check out books form libraries. Just a theory.
Avatar 11:11am kat330:

I can't get the FMU stream on the Grace either. Esp. annoying now that we've lost the remote for the Squeezebox -- but at least it's bringing me the streams.
Avatar 11:12am glenn:

honestly, is there a better post shoveling snack than toasted crumpets with butter and smuckers strawberry jam?
Avatar 11:12am kat330:

How much you shoveling, glenn?
Avatar 11:12am Matt from Springfield:

@VA: You're so Van. You probably think that handle's about you.
@kat: Carmatkatica.
Avatar 11:13am Matt from Springfield:

@glenn: Isn't a crumpet basically an English muffin?
Avatar 11:13am kat330:

@still b/p: Earphones that can extend some way outside? Because it's certainly easier on the back to shovel as it arrives rather than after it's all down.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am Uncle Michael:

Kat, any number of smartphone apps will let you forget that you lost your remote.
Avatar 11:14am glenn:

4th time this morning. probably 3" each time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am Doug Schulkind:

@Alex
Your theory would be a good one (surely it is a good one) if there were at least some decent university bookstores here, but there ain't.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am Uncle Michael:

The Joe Dukes is proving more elusive than I had expected.
Avatar 11:15am kat330:

@UM: Funny thing about that was wishing we could call our SB remote so we might find it! We don't own a smartphone, btw, but that miguel be its best advantage for something that size
Avatar 11:15am Carmichael:

Quite a lot of posts on a sunny Friday morning here in Jerry Brown Town. Hi kat, Matt, Bob, and the whole Hee Haw gang.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am Alex In Illinois:

@kat330
Your squeezebox has a remote!? (See my avatar)
  11:16am Andrew:

A crumpet is more like a small thick pancake. But drier and crispier, and toasted.
Avatar 11:16am glenn:

NO!!!!! they're both excellent, but completely different.
Avatar 11:17am kat330:

@Alex: Yeah, not that sort of Squeezebox -- yours is far more mollusk! :)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:18am Brian in UK:

Pancakes -NO. Galettes - YES.
Avatar 11:18am Matt from Springfield:

@Andrew/glenn: A bit sweeter than a muffin then?
  11:20am Andrew:

No, quite savoury - until you cover it in jam. Though my dad its them with butter and salt.
Avatar 11:20am Matt from Springfield:

Hi Carm!
Avatar 11:20am kat330:

This song's a sequel to "Are You Cookin' Beans?"
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:21am Brian in UK:

Paul I was not ignoring you, just freezing my nuts off in the woods but that's another story. In answer to your question no idea!

  11:23am Andrew:

Good afternoon!
Avatar 11:23am Van in DC:

kat is that you in your avatar? I bring my snow pic back. Old snowmageddon, meet new one...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am Uncle Michael:

Hee! I spun Butcher Pete very recently. I love this shit. I think I have it on the Bump Jump Jive comps.
Avatar 11:25am Carmichael:

Hey Doug, did you get out of the music blogspot e-mail group business? Or am I just out of the club?
Avatar 11:25am kat330:

@Van: Yes, I rotated this one in in honor of Nemo. Moi in Vermont some many moons ago. From a proofsheet of photos taken by my landlady (at her request, not mine).
Avatar 11:25am glenn:

kat, is that an old blues song in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me? -
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:26am Brian in UK:

Whacking & meat in the same song. Oh matron.
Avatar 11:26am kat330:

@Matt: Hey, tell us about your fancy-shmancy meal last night!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am Parq:

Kat, I had to open your profile pic up full to see it properly. In thumbnail form, it looked like you in an elevator with a pair of long haired dachshunds. Dox lover that I am, I was a little disappointed to learn the truth.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am Doug Schulkind:

Bye Van!

Love those Bump comps, UM. I have it on "Nasty Rhythm 'n' Blues" as well.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am Uncle Michael:

Anyone ever use soundsbox.com?

hrftudc.soundsbox.com...
Avatar 11:32am Matt from Springfield:

Tiny Davis, OTOH, sounds VERY entendre-ish!
Avatar 11:32am kat330:

@Parq: Aw, sorry to disappoint. :) Those were also the landcouple's dogs. We had a couple of kitties with us up in the attic of their 150-yr-old house. The room we used as a kitchen was wallpapered entirely in glamor shots of H-wood stars from the 30s-40s, taken from magazines.
Avatar 11:33am kat330:

Not I, UM.
Avatar 11:35am kat330:

Butcher Pete and Race Horse -- hm, anyone else hear how DNA testing in England showed horsemeat in the burgers of ?? Burger King?
Avatar 11:35am Matt from Springfield:

@kat: My choice on a prix fixe menu--Caesar salad with handmade croutons, a Chilean sea bass with basmati rice and very freshly chopped spinach, tomatoes and garlic, and two mini creme brulees, chocolate and berry flavored. All at $35 per person!

I found out once I got there that this was a promo for "Restaurant Week", so it sounds like the relatively new Monty's Steakhouse soon may be recognized in Washingtonian's "Best of Virginia" or some list like that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am AndrewC.:

kat330 - Tesco (a supermarket)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am AndrewC.:

Though they've now found ready made beef lasagne that is 100% horsemeat.
Avatar 11:38am Carmichael:

Doug, I haven't received ANY mail from you for about 3 weeks. That's why I asked.
  11:38am Paul Sherratt:

meh. lots of people eat horse.
Avatar 11:39am glenn:

i mean, package it as such, but still.
Avatar 11:39am kat330:

Apt that they were testing at Tesco.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am Doug Schulkind:

This is an outrage. I must flog (again) my unpaid intern. Please email me again so I can check for you on the list (and re-add you if something's amiss).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am Uncle Michael:

Damn those unflogged interns.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am Doug Schulkind:

@Matt from Springfield
I'm sure Document will want to put that on a banner across their website.
Avatar 11:41am kat330:

@glenn: Yes, truth in advertising is the point.
Avatar 11:43am ndbob:

@kat Yep - I've been following the horsemeat story
Avatar 11:43am Matt from Springfield:

@Doug: In gold lettering, on a deep red background.

@glenn: Processed lasagna made of horse makes me think of the cartoons where a horse (or any other animal) goes into a machine, and little packages of processed food come out. One step closer to that freaky vision...
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:44am Brian in UK:

@Paul Have you heard that Dorothy Oxenford (Listen with Mother) passed away recently.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:45am Brian in UK:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am Doug Schulkind:

I found the link for the Joe Dukes, but when you click on the Mediafire, it says "Files Belongs to a Suspended Account."
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:46am Brian in UK:

@Doug 'Unpaid intern' - Oxymoron.
Avatar 11:47am kat330:

I mean, there are people probably fine with eating pig anus, but it's a kindness to those who are not to tell customers their calamari is turf not surf.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:47am Brian in UK:

Avatar 11:48am kat330:

@Brian: :)
Avatar 11:48am Carmichael:

Done, Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am AndrewC.:

Why didn't they find the horse meat in the lasagne sooner?...

...

The used mask-a-pony cheese.
Avatar 11:50am kat330:

Ohhhh....that one hurt, Andrew.
Avatar 11:51am Matt from Springfield:

@Andrew: Hmm, I should check these cannoli now. They may be masking pony in here too...
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:51am Brian in UK:

Avatar 11:51am glenn:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am Uncle Michael:

Thanks for giving it the old college try, Doug.
Avatar 11:51am Matt from Springfield:

In the meantime, play it safe everyone, and stick to mask-a-pony and cheese (Mask n' Cheese).
Avatar 11:52am Matt from Springfield:

Sweet bass on this!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am AndrewC.:

I think it is an old spot. Taken at the local petting zoo.
Avatar 11:53am kat330:

Andrew, your pork actually gets smaller when clicking on it to make it bigger (and, NO, no double entendre in any of that sentence).
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:55am Brian in UK:

Nowt wrong with horse meat. I draw the line at rodents. Vicuna in the basket anyone.
Avatar 11:55am Matt from Springfield:

@Doug: I think you should come up to JC for the Marathon, and form an ad hoc Triumvirate with Clay Pigeon and Meghan McKee. Why's that? Because I noticed that those DJs and/or their commenters are among the most "punny" in the FMcommUnity. Putting all of you together on a single show will cause a critical mass of puns to be reached, and will wash verbal energy all over the world. Which I can only assume would be a good thing.
Avatar 11:55am ndbob:

not to mention buffalo burgers - it does feel strange eating a buffalo burger while looking at a buffalo
Avatar 11:56am ndbob:

some rodents are considered delicacies in some places
Avatar 11:56am kat330:

Wow, the ol' clock on the wall is saying it's that time again. Miss the Steinski afterglow hour... Thanks, Sir Doug!! Have a great weekend, chili not chilly for all!
