I've commented before on the key year for "makeout music" - 1959 - a subtle but pivotal turn reflecting changing mores in popular music. Think The Flamingos heavy cover of "I Only Have Eyes For You", anything by The Fleetwoods - makeout music on the rock/R&B scene started to bloom dramatically from that year.
