Street interviews, listener call-ins, vinyl gluttery, sporadic normalcy, original floperas and fiktion, blatant talking over songs, politix, tenderness, and a vague undercurrent of angst. Right up your alley!

I probably shouldn't mention this but, (does the comma come before or after the but?) I had a lot of micro-cassette issues on this show, hence, a lot of editing and enough-garble-that-it-bothers-me moments that it approached issuehood. Accepting the state of it, and not wanting to lose the interviews I had done, I decided to press on. I was hoping the evident sound-fatigue and flutterations weren't the fault of my (secret brand) micro-cassette recorder. They are discontinued now and are hard to find. I think it is the specific micro-cassette I was using. I have three of them and they are very old. They've worked in Paris, LA, Milwaukee, New York, Dubuque ... and I still use them. Sentimental, I suppose. I have taped-over so many interviews and moments, all on these three little crappy tapes. Sadly the specific one I employed for this Dusty may have finally acquired some final internal failures in there in the gears and pinions. Two mostly-functional left, though. That's good news. I could buy new micro-cassette tapes, but I'll bet the quality has gone further out the window, and the treble response of the new ones is worse than ever. In truth it's the treble response of my old ears which has worsened, from listening to all these hiss-riddled endeavors.

Thanks for listening to this episode of The Dusty Show. I hope you found it worthwhile. Of course, gun violence is a heavy topic and, if ever I seemed flippant or insensitive in my words or in the music, it was not intended. We're working our way through lots of issues right now, but we'll see it through.

Enjoyed getting out and interviewing people this past week. It had been a while. I was a little rusty. A little ... Dusty.

Starting to assemble CC5 and other good things for marathon. Should be fun.

Well, that's it. These playlists take a long time to do. Time to go play old Applejack. Night. Always remember. dusty@wfmu.org

There's no reason why we can't have gun regulation *and* address mental health issues more vigorously as well as the drug war & big pharma....but one thing that would've really helped mental health issues is universal health care/single payer affordable options.

As someone who has been around rifles all I can say that it is absolutely stupid and negligent to hand someone a loaded weapon. Most gun deaths are stupid accidents that wouldn't have happened with the faintest amount of responsibility.

@Timbrocks: Right to bear arms had a totally different context when that was written. The Constitution is a living document that changes as circumstances change through the years. The Founding Fathers would be so dismayed the way their careful work is being so misused today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27pm
Andrew Waterloo:

I think you should be able to buy a gun. But, I like what we have in Canada. You have to get a fire arms safety certificate before you can take ownership of one. If you want a machine-gun fine, as long as you have some impressive paperwork that backs you up.
Avatar 6:28pm
Carmichael:

I have to disagree with you, Timbrocks. I have no problem with individual gun ownership (via registration and background check), but there are too many people people storing massive amounts of weapons and ammo, starting up militias, and basically stockpiling either because they "can" or because they're fearful of an apocalypse event. There are too many of those people, and they seem to be increasing.

There's no need to amend the Constitution for regulating multi-rounds of ammunition and killing machines? I was mugged once, at age 8. The two gypsy thugs on bicycles must've been 12. They stole my salty licorice candy and took a bite off my pear popsicle before giving it back. I threw it to the ground. Soon after they had left. Boy was I mad. True story!

I have a tragic backstory involving an 8-yr. old boy on our street when I was even younger. He and a friend found his father's gun and, then he was dead. It's the irresponsible gun owners. I mean, if we already know how irresponsible people are in being parents (or wearing condoms to start with), what makes them suddenly geniuses and responsible citizens when it comes to gun ownership?

I got held up w/ a gun to my head in Fort Greene in 2003. Caught him later that night, and I had to testify to the grand jury. He got 8 years and is now on probation.

Given that you need to pass a test or few to get a drivers license, I don't see a problem having a similar set to get a gun.

So that's 3 of us so far that've been the victim of gun violence + 1 close to a gun fatality (2 if you want to count my friend's suicide by gun).

I'm going to guess these were all handguns too, not assault rifles....

great.

Anyone who owns a gun and doesn't keep it in a gun safe is a fool. If they have kids, especially so. That's sad of course but it's moronic. No one should EVER be that irresponsible.

I have a registered handgun in my bedroom somewhere, for those late-night unwanted visitors. That's where it stays, and my children don't even know I have it. Why can't other people just settle for the same?

Alright, Clay. "Love Gun" is about Gene Simmons' penis. It's not about a real gun.

My brother shot me in the face with an air rifle. Luckily it had been loaded with a q-tip. I still yelled at him.
Avatar 6:51pm
kat330:

And I have a half-brother who actually is a vendor at gun shows, so he has an economic investment in the matter. Whatever "pry it from my cold dead fingers!" argument can be made, it still is perfectly sane and reasonable to outright ban automatic assault weapons and volume ammunition, as well as background checks as restrictive as getting driver's licenses and beyond.

wife's sister and bro in law keep loaded handguns on the nightstands. when she stayed with then she thought the alarm would go off and she'd try to shut it off and blow her brains out by accident
Avatar 6:52pm
Timbrocks:

@kat a real gun owner should take a class that teaches responsible gun ownership. if they take a carry and conceal, they would be required to attend a class like that. i'm all for everyone being required to take such a course if they want to apply for gun ownership.

With the gun lobby, the argument seems to be all or nothing. No registration, no limit on rounds or numbers of weapons, no background checks at gun shows. They seem to see that as the 1st sign of an imminent government takeover. I just don't get the lack of reasonable discussion.

Handguns are far and away the weapon of choice used in most homicides. But you don't hear much talk about that. Can't help but think of political grandstanding. Also interestingly enough, 55% of gun murders are suicide.

I heard this on a recent Talk Of The Nation radio show.

@Carm with you on that. It should never be all or nothing. People definitely treat it that way. We do need stronger background checks. Gun shows are a free for all, at least down here. That's just as scary as anything.
