First typo of the day: the date on the playlist is wrong.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:07pm

Also, there's no link to this playlist on the WFMU home page. That's probably why I'm still alone here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:07pm

Dates are often wrong. Ask anyone who's been on a few.

Ah, but are you the real Irwin? You're not logged in like G and duke and I, so there's no way to be sure.
  3:10pm
Alison Porchnik:

Yeah, and you didn't credit the photographer! S/he must have risked her/his life getting so close to that tangle of wild monkeys. Maybe she lost her life. It's the least you can do to honor her memory.
  3:11pm
Listening Out There:

...I'll differ with RRG. I got here with a perfectly good home page link, and see "January 30, 2013," which is the same date here in my cell. :) (Though note that I am NOT registered on the WFMU site...therein might lie the problem...)

@Listening: the errors were there before you arrived. But I may have been the only to see them. You'll have to take my word for it. It would be foolish of me to lie about it because I'm AUTHENTICATED.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:14pm

@AP: I'm taking the Turing Test and I'm still not convinced. Run a script and execute a program that will activate your FS account and avatar, so you can fool us into thinking a real person is behind the posts.

MFS, I understand that's the way of the world. However, I have too many friggin' accounts as it is. In how many ways must we be tracked, I say? For now, I shall remain LOT anon....

I had to look Dias de Septeimbre up on the interwebs after a coworker came in asking who it was.
I looked them up on Grooveshark and they translated their name (or maybe Google Chrome did it automatically) and in english, the band's name sounds less exotic.

@Droll: I didn't comment on "evil mashup-doers", because that really depends on who does mash-ups and how well they do a particular one. Now THIS I'll agree! EVIL mash-up!

@EAS No, it's just another weird mashup

I mentioned this before but here it goes again. Back in college we played a drinking game where we listened to Van Halen and had to take a sip every time Dave did his squelchy holler.

On the other hand, this combo of songs is obscenely juxtaposed in a way that makes it kind of funny. The worst mash-up I've heard on FMU was probably RIAA's "Sweet California Girl O' Mine" - yes, GnR with the Beach Boys. Totally not necessary or pleasant.

I imagine that Might Mike must have giggled himself into a coma when he was mixing that.

MfS, Downloading some software to let you play two songs at once doesn't even pass the sniff test. I don't think extracting the stems out of a RockBand video game makes someone clever or creative and it sure as hell counts as stealing.

I don't think you want to pick this fight with me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41pm
Matt from Springfield:

Agree, Caryn! I wouldn't have known about that slick late 70s/80s prog band without Julie intro-ing me to them. Robert Plant tells WFMU to "Camel On!"

Hello Kitty as well! Glad it wasn't the end of the world, I must clutch a plush toy in one arm and a tall bottle of whiskey in another. Seems appropriate somehow :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Droll: People take Rockband stems and make mashups out of that? No, I don't mean to endorse that kind of laziness. I like mashups mixed from individual tracks. GHP, RIAA, Party Ben, Team9 and others are great at doing them.

Matt from Springfield:

@Droll: Most of them started mash-ups in the early 00s, before those games were ever out. They probably took individual tracks off the CDs using (probably Apple) software.

As for licensing, I don't think the labels issue licenses at all, unless it's for a track for their own albums (e.g. "Rapture Riders"). I got all their tracks posted on their websites for free, they're not making any money from those.

Mash-Up started up as a DIY bedroom thing. It usually just combining two songs along without a lot of filtering.

Oh damn, I want a muffaletta. One of the only New Orleans specialties i didn't get to try when I went down there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm

@Andrew: That "Tom's Diner" remix from the early 90s has been called the first mash-up. So Suzanne Vega is the Mother of the MP3, and the Mash-Up!
Avatar 5:13pm
Droll:

MfS, That's my point: The musicians who spend years learning to play, work hard writing songs, and have to buy expensive instruments are getting nothing for all their effort. And you're right, neither is the crook who used the tracks.

If you can explain why this is a good thing, I'm sure the musicians not earning anything will benefit from your insights.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:14pm
Andrew Waterloo:

@Droll, the simplistic answer is exposure.

@Mike: What?!? You were in NOLA, and you DIDN'T try that?? That's one of my priorities. An Italian deli makes a version of that around here, pretty good olive-spread Italian sub but I want to try the original article (at Central Grocery: en.wikipedia.org...)

AW, Exposure of what to who? Zero times 100 million is zero. I can't take 1M YouTube views to the grocery store to buy dinner.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:18pm
Mike East:

@Matt - I didn't have a car, so I was at the whim of my hosts to get around. according to them, po' boys where the top priority.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:21pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Droll: In any case, piracy of the original tracks is what's really cheating musicians out of earnings. If you think mixing stuff around for your own and listeners amusement should come with a publishing royalty, why not a royalty every time you play a song?

But I like artistic recombining of existing fragments to make a new thing--it's what folk music has done for generations. Most on WFMU love the concept of mash-ups, but you can always make an argument against them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Mike: Po' boys are a priority! I've never had one of those myself. Did you go to little shacks and corner shops where they make them fresh? A co-worker says that those places make them the best.

Droll:

MfS, Licensed streaming services (Spotify, Pandora, etc) pay a royalty every time you listen to a song, so that's already the norm. Film and TV have always paid for music that way. It's not my idea and it's not new or weird.

Traditional fusion by a musician playing a a mix of styles on a musical instrument (possibly from yet another style) is not comparable to taking credit for using the laptop your parents bought you to do homework on to play a loop sampled from someone else's song.
