Connection blues & breaks -- My phone cord to the DSL modem has been way toooo long, the tech support people insist, and the cause of sputtery gummy troubles. So a shorter one for the moment has my computer and telephone placed in unlikely spots with cables stretched out east and west across two rooms to jack and outlets, and I'm good 'n likely to trip and break a leg today - an OOF! That is the tune, and I'd thought for a long time it was one of Charlie's own compositions, but apparently it ain't, despite his many other accomplished musical makin's.

Ok this is a weird one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am Doug Schulkind:

@Matt from Springfield
Oh THAT! You gave it such a fancy sounding name. I thought you were referring to something else. That Flash Player for the stream has been around for a while, but wasn't working until recently.

Geez, appears I've missed a boatload of brilliant blues. :, That makes me a loser thrice per Charlie's Jan. 10th playlist this week. I've now had two opportunities to win Leonard Cohen tix by phone, but wasn't the winning caller either time. [this morning's giveaway is why I'm late here, btw]

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am Ike:

Sounds good! Say, did you know this kind of music is now on regular FM in D.C. 24/7? WAMU did something right for a change and put their bluegrass channel on the air (just a translator, but regular FM nonetheless). It ain't no FMU, but it's better than nothing if you're driving with no Internet in D.C.
Avatar 11:31am Matt from Springfield:

I like Ruth Minnikin! And along with this Morrison & West, seems like two fantastic new albums!
And thanks Doug!

Avatar 11:33am Matt from Springfield:

Hey Ike!
My Subaru is newer, and has an HD Radio, so I preset the high quality 88.5-2 bluegrass channel. But before I got that car and drove around in my old Nissan, I did find the lower power FM repeater and listened on occasion.

@WH: Sruti box I guess!
Avatar 11:36am Matt from Springfield:

@kat: Sounds great--I love tikka masala. It should adapt well, I once had an amazing "pork maRsala" at a restaurant; like a super moist pork chop and marsala sauce combined.
Avatar 11:36am Shaun:

'HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA'.
Avatar 11:39am kat330:

@Parq: I love Gahan Wilson! After the fact last week, I thought how appropriate it would have been to post a link to one of my fave Wilson cartoons (if I could have found it): A sullen-looking couple seated on a train (or subway). Outside their window you see a sign pointing in the direction they're traveling that reads "Nowhere."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am Ike:

@Matt, oh, I thought it was new. Well, that tells you how often I get into D.C. -- not very often. So is the signal range for 88.5-HD2 good? I've heard some HD stations don't reach very far.
  11:40am Alex in Illinois:

@Uncle Mike: I'm in!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am Jeff G:

Speaking of "new ones," <plug alert>
D:O Radio on Monday will be part 1 of our 2-part "2012 faves" programming. There was just that much good music released last year. Or so we thought. Hope you can drop by between noon and 3pm EST! Doug will be manning the playlist, if that's any incentive. </end plug>
Avatar 11:41am Carmichael:

OK, made it for the last 20 minutes. I hope you didn't play anything good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am Doug Schulkind:

Heya Shaun and Carmichael.
Avatar 11:43am ndbob:

Hello Carmichael!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am Parq:

Kat, one of the most trenchant for me shows an older couple in the supermarket, surrounded by cans and boxes marked "Shit", "Crap", "Junk", "Crud" and so forth, and the Missus is saying, "And every day it costs more!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am Uncle Michael:

Count me as another Gahan Wilson fan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am Doug Schulkind:

I think all the avatars on the playlist page are just gorgeous! I'm really glad you're all here.

We're glad YOU'RE here first so we could be here, Doug!

Today's Drummer Some is going to go over by about 5 minutes. Adjust your snacking plans.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am Parq:

By the way, gang, my strangely Orwelian work puter won't let me do friends on this system, so I'll friend all of the usual suspects over the weekend.
Avatar 11:48am Matt from Springfield:

@Ike: In Springfield (12-15 miles or so from DC zero milestone), all the HD stations have the strength and quality of FM or higher.
  11:50am Alex in Illinois:

I will register and avatarize when I get home. Right now, I am at work, so I do not have access to my home email, and I am not sure that I will be able to upload a photo from my employer's network.
Avatar 11:51am northguineahills:

I have to admit, I've never heard that Somali track before. Go figure. It was actually really shakin'.
Avatar 11:51am kat330:

Even if I can't seem to win their ticket giveaways, we are blessed with a pretty fine public radio system in Louisville area. The AA frequency (WFPK) has a decent playlist and WFPL has all the usual BBC news and NPR programming, and WUOL has classical music.
Avatar 11:51am Shaun:

@kat330 An unheimlich beaut. (the blue baby, I mean).
Avatar 11:52am Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I read "Magic" on my mother's bookshelf as well. It plus pretty much the entire rest of the bookshelf scarred me in what have turned out to be useful ways.
Avatar 11:53am Matt from Springfield:

@Parq: It IS a strangely Orwellian system--listen to music and exchange comments if you want, but don't you make *friends* doing it! :)
Avatar 11:53am kat330:

@Doug: I can postpone making lunch, but the Philo high noon call will be coming in. I can catch it in archive along with the first sets though.

Avatar 11:56am kat330:

@Kenzo: As a kid there was a funhouse at the local carnival park (Fontaine Ferry). It was called Hilarity Hall and had these two moving mannequin clowns laughing really loud. I had nightmares about that couple.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56am Rich in Washington:

@Kenzo: Been enjoying your recent sets.

@NGH
'allo mate!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58am Rich in Washington:

@Kat330: Have you seen the somewhat common carnival automata called Laughin' Sal? It's really horrifying. It's a mechanical, redheaded chubby lady with a really scary sounding laugh track/recording.. I think she's sometimes dressed up like a (1930's) Hillbilly lady.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59am Doug Schulkind:

Thanks for Brian in Snowland for reminding me to listen to this majestic voice more often...
Avatar 11:59am Matt from Springfield:

Kenzo, kudos on the C64 command screen!

The new system is going great, as well! The only thing to point out, is the sometimes jarring color of registered users names against certain playlist backgrounds. Is there any way for hosts to choose the color of their user name links? Some cases it would need to be a different color than their existing scheme but to blend in better.
Avatar 11:59am Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever: lastever.org):

Thanks, Rich! I've been enjoying doing them!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59am Uncle Michael:

Today was my missus' first GTDS and she's loved it.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00pm Rich in Washington:

Oh, yes. I had nearly forgotten - thanks also, Kenzo for the swell new interface, so we can yammer at our DJs.
Avatar 12:01pm ndbob:

excellent show Doug!
Avatar 12:02pm Shaun:

Love this Diarra. Is there a year on it, Doug?
Avatar 12:02pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Matt: Those links are coming up in the link color that is specified in that playlist color combo. So, technically, DJ's can control it, if they realize to do so. (Some DJ's specify ONLY a background color and no link colors, which leads to ambiguous link colors.)
Avatar 12:02pm Matt from Springfield:

Have a good weekend kat, and everyone else!
Thanks for the fine tunes and questionable pictures, Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04pm Doug Schulkind:

@Shaun
I have only a digital copy. No liner notes.
Avatar 12:04pm Matt from Springfield:

@Kenzo: Thanks! I'll contact DJs for whom their new user color doesn't sync with their overall scheme and suggest a more suitable color (I'm a cartographer, so I know whereof I speak ;)
Keep up the great work!

Can I change the color of the stars?
Avatar 12:06pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Doug: Alas, stars cannot currently be adjusted. I know, they sorta fade into your colors.
Avatar 12:06pm still b/p:

Someone must certainly have said so here before...but it's ALWAYS a good kind of Good Friday when I can catch this show. Thanks, Doug.
Avatar 12:07pm Shaun:
