Listener comments!

  3:00pm
Mary:

"Oh! That's wfmu playing - "
  3:01pm
rrg:

Still an hour and a half until sunset.
  3:01pm
rrg:

I'm getting the large package of Nervine.
  3:02pm
rrg:

And I want the effervescent tablets!
  3:03pm
Andrew Waterloo:

I could use a solid cure for boredom
  3:03pm
rrg:

The clauses in the theme's title are reversed this week. I noticed, but was I supposed to?
  3:04pm
rrg:

Since I have been taking Nervine NOTHING bothers me.
  3:05pm
Irwin:

Thanks for the idea, @Mary. I'm on it.
  3:06pm
Jay S:

Oh, wow - I haven't heard "English Diplomacy" in decades. Thanks!
  3:09pm
Dan B From Upstate:

Oh, Susanna Hoffs... You've aged so well...
  3:09pm
rrg:

Preposition. And I'll stop now. For now.
  3:10pm
67tele:

Oh No, the kids grabbed the car keys and took off, and I'm stuck in an "N" hole - get help
  3:10pm
Matt from Springfield:

Woah! This is the slightly creepy song Joe McG likes to play--but the Bangles singer covered it!

Hey Irwin, everyone!
  3:11pm
rrg:

Susanna, well, I wouldn't lock HER in the dark closet for eating crackers.
  3:11pm
rrg:

Tipsy covered this. Except they didn't.
  3:12pm
rrg:

Not Kurt Weill. I mean...
  3:14pm
Caryn:

That ad is just nothing but double entendres. Yeah, take Dr. Miles Nervine to relieve you. Small package? Large package? Up to the customer.
  3:15pm
Caryn:

Woohoo! The Bonzos!
  3:16pm
Matt from Springfield:

At the time Nervine was probably undiluted opiate! So much the better, your customers will NEED the product from then on!

BONZO DOG BAND!!
  3:18pm
rrg:

Yes, it's the festive season.
  3:18pm
Matt from Springfield:

Wow. And now Irwin is making the BONZOS seem sane!
  3:19pm
Laura L:

Sounds like Gordon's been getting into the eggnog already.
  3:19pm
rrg:

Since i have been taking Nervine nothing bothers me.
  3:19pm
Matt from Springfield:

"Irwin Behaving Badly: Festive Holidays Edition"
  3:20pm
Matt from Springfield:

@rrg: Ain't enough Nervine in the large package to fix this problem...
  3:21pm
Caryn:

As long as Irwin doesn't go into a rendition of "Wonderful Christmas Time" or "Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer", we'll be fine.
  3:21pm
rrg:

Heh. He said "Willie".
  3:22pm
rrg:

Oh! He said "Wee" Willie.
  3:23pm
Caryn:

@rrg: that's a nickname for the "small package" Dr. Nervine
  3:25pm
Andrew Waterloo:

"In the general sense, a “nervine” is a plant that has some type of positive effect on the nervous system. However, the active ingredient in Nervine was bromide (a form of bromine), which was once used as a sedative and an anti-convulsant (a medication used to treat seizures). While Nervine was claimed to be “…among the safest of effective medications to clam the nerves” this was not the case. The problem is that excess consumption of bromide can lead to bromism, which is a condition that leads to various psychiatric, neurological, gastrointenstinal, and dermatological symptoms."
  3:25pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Caryn: (hopefully he won't go crazy on the reverb, if he does "Wonderful Christmastime". Even though it would be a good satire on the heavy synth reverb of the original, Irwin screaming it with reverb may produce a fatal sound wave!)
  3:25pm
Andrew Waterloo:

This goes on to say that it is used in pesticide.. http://blog.medfriendly.com/2012/05/nervine-vintage-medication-pitched-to.html
  3:28pm
Caryn:

Really, that OY track should be called "Donutly" or something. It clashes with the artist, album and label titles, if it doesn't include the -ly suffix!
  3:28pm
rrg:

Van Dyke Parks produced The Mighty Sparrow?

Well, you learn something new every day.

Well, I do.

Well, most days.
  3:28pm
G:

Dave Brubeck's death, one day shy of 92, was announced in the last hour or two...
  3:29pm
Andrew Waterloo:

I guess it's not so strange that the guys in Naked Lunch were getting high off of bug powder now.
  3:29pm
Matt from Springfield:

ProCOOL Harum!
  3:29pm
rrg:

Yes. I hope we'll hear a little DB today.
  3:30pm
?:

Let's all take five in memory of Dave.
  3:30pm
Matt from Springfield:

And no, Dr. Nervine, don't pun off the "Harum" part of the name.
  3:30pm
Caryn:

Yay, Procol Harum!
  3:31pm
Mike Fun:

Irwin, do you have any Raymond Scott electronic music that's not on "Manhattan Research" or "Soothing Sounds for Baby"?
  3:31pm
Matt from Springfield:

I'll take five at 5 p.m. today, in his honor!
  3:31pm
chris:

Hey, where'd my Nervine disappear to now?
  3:32pm
Irwin:

Thanks to Laura L for the quick-Photoshop!
  3:32pm
Doug S.:

Best. Brel cover. Ever.
  3:33pm
jan:

Irwin, RE Robin Trower: Did I ever tell you that when having a drink with Robin after photographing him for the cover of a solo album, I had asked him," what does skip the line and dangle mean?" His reply, in his strong british accent, "it's skip the light Fandango, it's a dance!" So many pop music lyrics are unintelligible anyway.
  3:33pm
Matt from Springfield:

I was about to say...did too many people reach for the Nervine, and break the image?
  3:33pm
chris:

whew, calming...
  3:33pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Doug: The Nina, or the Procol Harum?
  3:34pm
Curtis [Boston]:

I'm told that the Homburg was popularized by Edward VII after he visited Bad Homburg (Hesse, Germany) and picked up a hat himself. It will come as no surprise that his shoes were laced up wrong.
  3:34pm
Doug S.:

@Matt from S
Nina Nina Nina!
  3:35pm
rrg:

Gesundheit.
  3:35pm
Matt from Springfield:

I'm guessed Nina by this point - a very dramatic air to it. Thanks!
  3:35pm
kata:

this is quite possibly the most amazing Nina Simone song I've ever heard
  3:36pm
common:

wow! Never heard this nina simone
  3:36pm
Matt from Springfield:

Hi kata!
My most amazing Nina song is tied with this one, and all her others.
  3:37pm
Aharon:

Wow. That Nina S. song manages not to be ridiculous, so it's amazing.
  3:38pm
Mike Fun:

Yes! on the Nina song. And followed by Judy Collins? Great show!
  3:40pm
Caryn:

That Procol Harum track is making me long for the King Curtis version of "A Whiter Shade of Pale". Will have to listen to it after 7SD.
  3:41pm
Andrew Waterloo:

Wow, this is fantastic cover of Dress Rehearsal Rag
  3:41pm
Matt from Springfield:

Now, Joshua Rifkin's arrangements are perfect for this one--punchy and dramatic, yet tranquil at times.
  3:41pm
Droll:

Thanks to whoever fixed the image to read WFMU instead of "children". I'm pretty sure my mom was dosing us kids with that Nervine stuff, my therapist and parole agent both tell me not to think about momma Mary any more.
  3:42pm
Caryn:

This seems to be the "dramatic songs" set. And a very good one.
  3:43pm
rrg:

I have discovered that the time in Finland is 7 hours ahead. Too late to be listening to 7SD. If you ask me.
  3:44pm
still b/p:

Don't some bits of Dress Rehearsal Rag and Diamonds and Rust sound similar?
  3:53pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Droll: Thanks owed to Laura L! (waves)
@rrg: 7SD is dangerous for the body, mind and soul, yet it's addictive, like Nervine. At least that's the only logical explanation I have that we keep tuning in to it...
  3:54pm
Matt from Springfield:

In fact the modified pic would make a great frontpage "banner" pic for WFMU!
  3:55pm
Michael:

Howdy Irwin - wonderful show !
  3:59pm
Caryn:

@rrg: true, but considering the fact that my sleeping patterns are f-ed up, and I went to bed today at 8 a.m., 7SD is on quite early according to my schedule.
And dammit, I missed Clinic! Was in the kitchen making dinner (a light omelette with chives).
  4:01pm
Andrew Waterloo:

My discovery of WFMU's midnight shows will in fact be the death of me.
  4:01pm
rrg:

It will be in the archive.
  4:01pm
Matt from Springfield:

Wait, people are POSTING comments to this AccuPlaylist?! And I thought I had finally figured out telepathy! So how are MY comments showing up then, if I'm only thinking them??...
  4:02pm
Caryn:

@Matt: Maybe Ken's poltergeist friend Kendra is posting them for you?
  4:02pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Andrew: Don't forget all the amazing 3 a.m. shows too! ;)
  4:04pm
Matt from Springfield:

Damn, have to get "her" exorcised now!
And I thought the bloody "ARDNEK" on my bathroom mirror every morning was a sign of good luck!
  4:04pm
Andrew Waterloo:

@Matt, tell me about. Once sleepness night I was laying on the couch and this very excellent Distort Jersey City show came on.
  4:07pm
Caryn:

Yeah, the good thing about not sleeping properly is that I get to listen to some shows live that I would usually only listen to on the archives. On the other hand, this means I have to archive-listen to shows I'd usually listen to live. TPTB giveth with one hand, but taketh away with the other...
  4:07pm
Uncle Michael:

Hello room.
  4:08pm
Andrew Waterloo:

@Caryn, I try to use the time I don't listen to WFMU to actually listen to the music I own. That is why they have talks shows, isn't it?
  4:08pm
northguineahills:

For the last two months until this week, I was getting by on 2-3 hours of sleep. I got to listen to shows I usually wouldn't, and watched a lot of movies...

Dave Brubeck, thanks! I guess it was his time.
  4:08pm
Matt from Springfield:

Hey, this isn't Andy Breckman's song!!

@Andrew: Obviously even *I* can't listen to everything -- but DJC with Deed Runlea is good, always having live bands. Wed/Thu @3 is Dark Night of the Soul with Julie, my FAVE of the timeslot! YMMV, but check out those playlists!
  4:11pm
Caryn:

@Andrew: well, I do that too, but not necessarily during the talk shows. I listen to those.
  4:12pm
Matt from Springfield:

Sat/Sun Imaginary Radio with Chris M. has a very wide, eclectic mix, as does Fri/Sat's Zzzzero Hour with Bill Mac. Stan on Thu/Fri plays the long, spacey sets, The Frow Show with Jesse plays a lot of acoustic, including the Grateful Dead. And Ohhh The Sweet Sounds of Humanity! with amEdeo is crazy, silly fun, much like Nick the Bard's show!
  4:12pm
Matt from Springfield:

I may have heard this "The Message" cover/sample/whatever before here, but how do I love this song!
  4:14pm
Andrew Waterloo:

@Caryn, I've been listening to them more often too. Actually, TMI was one of the first regular shows for me.
  4:15pm
rrg:

Can't remember if Irwin did the mandatory station ID before this set.

It's bothering me.
  4:15pm
Andrew Waterloo:

I want to know if those Dokkerman guys have ever applied their magic to a Public Enemy tune
  4:15pm
rrg:

That I can't remember.
  4:16pm
Irwin:

Yes, rrg, I certainly did. Check the tape.
  4:17pm
Laura L:

David Lieb Hart needs to meet this Bourbon Princess.
  4:23pm
Matt from Springfield:

Failedolkie
  4:25pm
Matt from Springfield:

Hey look, it's coffee! (raises styrofoam cup to "Coffee Achiever")
  4:26pm
Robert:

Only previous time I heard this was on WFMU ~30 yrs. ago. Love it.
  4:27pm
tom:

coffee achievers is BEST SONG EVER! 76%!!!
  4:27pm
chris:

Actually, coffee drinking originated in Ethiopia... I'm more than 76% certain
  4:28pm
Matt from Springfield:

Lane & Luis!!! Their Latin continues to be cracked!!

What's the riff rip-off? "Can We Still Be Friends"?
  4:28pm
Robert:

"Coffee Achiever", I meant. Would've been on Frank O'Toole or Paul or possibly Jim Price.
  4:29pm
chris:

Patriotic tune... why does it pay homage to the British Rolling Stones?
  4:29pm
tom:

Oh, and yes...I am a Coffee Achiever..... Cures my EVERY ill!
  4:29pm
chris:

OK, clearly I need more Nervine...
  4:29pm
Matt from Springfield:

http://www.wfmu.org/playlists/shows/41333
The picture still cracks me up! :)
  4:29pm
Caryn:

For a while, I suspected the 7SD "tribute to Dave Brubeck" was code for "Andy isn't going to be showing up, so Ken is covering by playing music", but Andy telling stories kinda ruins that theory.
  4:33pm
rrg:

James Wolff's voice is so...odd. But I like it.
  4:37pm
tom:

Yeah Chris, but "Ethiopia" doesn't rhyme with "ill". point to Brazil.
  4:38pm
Carmichael:

Jeez, I miss the first 36 minutes and the comments board goes nuts. Hiya Irwin, and nice playlist. Did the Bonzos have a proper Best Of before Cornology? Or does the latter qualify as an "All Of"?
  4:39pm
Matt from Springfield:

GO Cults Percussion Ensemble!
  4:40pm
Caryn:

@tom: true, but "Ethiopia" rhymes with more interesting words. Like "cornucopia". Point to Ethiopia.
  4:42pm
Andrew Waterloo:

I love the Cults Percussion album.
  4:42pm
Vibes:

ALL the vibes are good with us!
  4:42pm
Listening Out There:

Ah. Now I can listen. Darn meetings....
  4:43pm
Lulu:

This is very nice!
  4:46pm
Carmichael:

Some Harry Breuer would fit nicely here.
  4:46pm
jan:

Loving the percussion set!
  4:46pm
Matt from Springfield:

I agree Lulu, I like all this nice marimba and percussion!
  4:46pm
Matt from Springfield:

Hmm, long instrumental percussion tracks. I suspect Irwin's got the ol' vacuumola running right now.
  4:47pm
tom:

Very correct Caryn...I suppose when one is writing lyrics at 19 years old.... but then again, as many songwriters have proved, grammar, syntax, political and culinary history, etc. sometimes does NOT improve with age. Thank goodness we left the hardcore punk to the kids in those days.
  4:47pm
tom:

End of thread. Digging the current marimba tune....
  4:47pm
mick:

it just started snowing here, in dörentrup, germany.....
music`s pretty spot on.
  4:48pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Carm: He was a xylophone player?
  4:48pm
Matt from Springfield:

Sounds nice mick! Symphonic snowflakes!
  4:49pm
Carmichael:

@Matt: one of the best. He really hit his stride in the 50s - 60s. Google Image him to see some album covers of the period.
  4:50pm
Matt from Springfield:

Oh Gawd, Jonathan Coulton!! I love him! :D
  4:50pm
rrg:

You know, there's nothing funnier than a smoking monkey.
  4:52pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Carm: "Mallet Mischief"!
http://www.spaceagepop.com/breuer.htm

Looks like a period album cover from "A Mighty Wind". Harry Shearer would resemble Harry well :)
  4:55pm
Matt from Springfield:

Thought we were going into bed music and talkover--no, but this Billy Taylor is very good! I would certainly rec as a bed music track!
  4:58pm
Carmichael:

Taylor used to host a show about jazz, where he would sit at the piano and discuss techniques and styles. Very informative, displaying his natural teaching abilities.
  4:58pm
G:

I heard that.
  4:58pm
rrg:

You have to tell us the name of the radio station now.
  4:59pm
Carmichael:

A TV show, that is.
  4:59pm
Time:

Well you can't keep putting us on layaway. PAY UP NOW!!
  4:59pm
G:

This is a radio station, too????? Holy crap!
  5:00pm
Matt from Springfield:

Nice visual to see a quality pianist breaking down his styles.
  5:00pm
Matt from Springfield:

Pause from work!
It's 5:00, Take Five for Dave Brubeck.
  5:02pm
shell:

This background sounds so good
  5:02pm
Matt from Springfield:

@G: This website has a radio transmitter (two, actually), so that WFMU can control our mindwaves. They haven't figured out how to do that efficiently over the 'Webs yet.
  5:02pm
rrg:

Then there was Arnold the Pig.
  5:03pm
rrg:

Wait! What radio station is this?
  5:03pm
Caryn:

Now I really want to know what the cover of Breuer's "Mallets in Wonderland" looks like.
  5:04pm
Carmichael:

Yes! Northern Irish Blues hero!!
  5:07pm
Uncle Michael:

Chair boogie here.
  5:08pm
Todd 76%:

Tuned in late and missed Irwin playing my old punk band. Such an honor!
  5:09pm
Carmichael:

@Caryn: http://www.allmusic.com/album/the-history-of-space-age-pop-vol-2-mallets-in-wonderland-mw0000174510
  5:10pm
rrg:

Oh boy!
  5:10pm
Caryn:

@Carmichael: wrong "Mallets in Wonderland", alas. The Breuer one is an out-of-print LP from 1987. Google only gives 3 links, and none have pics.
  5:11pm
Irwin:

@rrg: And the perfect followup song!
  5:11pm
Matt from Springfield:

Like this Linda Scott!
  5:12pm
rrg:

How could you not like it?
  5:14pm
Caryn:

WTH, AC/DC concert starting on tv at half past, and it wasn't listed in the tv listings? Luckily I checked my DVR guide, or I wouldn't have found out at all.
  5:17pm
Matt from Springfield:

@rrg: Then, I LOVVVVVVVVE it!

Likewise Jason Karaban!
  5:21pm
rrg:

We don't hear the word "Esso" often anymore here in the United States.
  5:21pm
Matt from Springfield:

Jump in de line!
  5:21pm
Listening Out There:

One thing I like about the Esso album is the cover. Can everyone see it on my screen? Show of hands...
  5:21pm
Irwin:

TETSB is another VDP production.
  5:25pm
rrg:

Well then, that's two things I learned today. At least.
  5:25pm
Uncle Michael:

Oh boy...Cal Tjader. Yum.
  5:25pm
Caryn:

Aw, google has gone all Finnish... well, in our time zone. Y'all will have to wait.

Oh lord, the TETSB has an album called "Calypso Christmas". Well, we know what Irwin will be playing this X-mas!
  5:27pm
Caryn:

Okay, that "the" in front of TETSB is totally unnecessary...
  5:30pm
Matt from Springfield:

I'm all doped up on IrWINe...
  5:30pm
rrg:

The effervescent tablets are the best.
  5:31pm
Listening Out There:

...me, I favor the suppositories...
  5:32pm
Uncle Michael:

They're effervescent too.
  5:33pm
Listening Out There:

exactly. effervescent suppositories...
  5:34pm
Matt from Springfield:

I shudder to think what this "tribute" might be..!
  5:35pm
Matt from Springfield:

Hey Pidge, they're playing Atomic Rooster now! :)
  5:39pm
Mott:

i have this album...i didnt think anyone else had this one. never even heard of these guys, but i like the name so i bought it. Irwin does it again!
  5:40pm
rrg:

Sometimes, if I'm in an Anglophilic mood, I talk about "hoovering" the WFMU studio instead of "vacuuming" it.
  5:41pm
Caryn:

The mashup of this and "Thunderstruck" from my tv is enjoyable.

I just found out Atomic Rooster works for loading a dishwasher quickly.

Also, where early Jethro Tull yoinked some of their harder sound from.

rrg:

Irwin'll do that to ya. Pick out something that you love and thought was obscure.
  5:45pm
G:

All three in that Atomic Rooster trio are among the choir eternal. The drummer and keyboardist died of overdoses of prescription meds 20 years ago, and the guitarist died last year.

Caryn:

@Mott: well, "Death Walks Behind You" is their best-known album, so at least you managed to pick the least-obscure bit of a relatively obscure band.

Carmichael:

Carl Palmer was the drummer for Atomic Rooster, right? And some connection to Arthur Brown? Or was it Dachen Theaker or Vincent Crane that also played in the Rooster?

Matt from Springfield:

@G: At least drummer (after '72) Ric Parnell is still around. He was Spinal Tap's drummer Mic Shrimpton!

some genealogy :-)

G:

someone asked about arthur brown/atomic rooster link:

"In summer 1969, The Crazy World of Arthur Brown had to cease touring in the middle of their second U.S. tour because of keyboardist Vincent Crane's mental illness. When he recovered, he and drummer Carl Palmer took the step to leave Arthur Brown and return to England, the return date being Friday 13 June 1969, which was the year of the Rooster in the Chinese calendar, and arranged a meeting with Brian Jones to discuss a collaboration. After Jones's death, they adopted the name Atomic Rooster (with influence from the US band Rhinoceros), and soon recruited Nick Graham on bass and vocals. They followed with what had emerged as The Crazy World of Arthur Brown formula of vocals, organ, bass, and drums."

Caryn:

@Carmichael: Vincent Crane. But Carl Palmer only played on the first album. He was gone by the time "Death Walks Behind You" was recorded.

Jeanne Moreau. This is why I listen to Irwin.

Carmichael:

Thanks, ya buncha Brainiacs! And I'm still looking for Mallets in Wonderland, which apparently doesn't exist (despite several accounts of it beinf completed and released).
  5:54pm
Caryn:

Actually, let's face it, the Atomic Rooster band roster has had so many switch-ups, they're the hard prog rock equivalent of The Sugababes. Or Destiny's Child. Or any other "pick a damn line-up already, people" group.
  5:55pm
Caryn:

Oh man, sorry for putting "Mallets in Wonderland" in your brain, Carmichael! If it makes you feel better, keep looking for it myself. My google-fu is failing me.
  5:55pm
rrg:

Mallets in Wonderland does exist.

Matt from Springfield:

Fantastic! Thanks for another great show Irwin!

Have a good one, everybody!

Irwin --- Mr Carpenter appears on the Boston radio station WZBC.

Caryn:

Well, WorldCat has "Mallets" details, so any US residents might be able to find an actual vinyl copy in their near-by library that way. (http://www.worldcat.org/title/mallets-in-wonderland/oclc/018863575)
