Radio ping-pong: In our second and final annual radio showdown, Yours truly (Rob that is) trade tracks with my connubial companion Katie Gentile. Among other things, Katie is an academic, author, open water swimmer, violinist for indie bands Special Pillow and Mad Scene, and former WCBN radio DJ. Somehow she makes time to come down to FMU and pit her collection of rare and classic vintage indie rock (with special Aussie / NZ emphasis) against my vintage and contemporary global sounds - exclusively on 7" vinyl.

Listener comments!

  6:12pm Leek:

Rob and Katie! Rocking the house. Emerging from the sludge, and taking no prisoners.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14pm Your DJs:

Thanks Leek! Yeah, we've just emerged from the sludge too...
  6:28pm Tamar:

Bringing a new meaning to desert island disks-- glad you made it through OK!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:32pm Your DJs:

Thanks Tamar! Well, fortunately while we couldn't play vinyl we did have a portable cd player and a few thousand desert island cds to choose from at home for the two days we were marooned! So I guess that wasn't so bad...
  6:36pm katie:

hi Tamar. good to hear from you.
  6:46pm julian:

Morning Rob and Katie! Kalimera!
Glad to hear you resurfaced unscathed. I was pretty worried when I saw a photo of flood waters surging through Hoboken tube station.
Didn't this all happen before to you both last year? I feel a strong deja vu....(and not just with The Chills singles!)
Take care, keep your chins up!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm Your DJs:

Good morning Julian! Well first of all it's unheard of to have two hurricanes hit the NYC area in two years (hello climate change) - but this one was MUCH worse than last year! We were stuck on the island - er, in our apartment - for two days and the electricity just finally was turned back on this morning! And we got off fairly easy compared to other folks. Yeesh...
  7:11pm Gaylord Fields:

Katie, never apologize for your love of Golden Gord! Embrace your quasi-Canadian-ness! Soon you'll be pronouncing Detroit as "de-troy-it" in solitarity.
  7:15pm Gaylord Fields:

And I mean "solidarity" -- stupid iPad keypad!
  7:19pm katie:

well you know I was raised on the border so it's pretty easy to go over to the "other side" of socialized medicine, Tim Horton donuts, and the dulcet tones of Gordy.
  7:19pm Leek:

@Gaylord - "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald"? I mean, He's kind of a big deal in Mittenland.
  7:21pm katie:

on a personal note, my dad's singing voice was like Gordy's. He bought me my G.L. records. So I'm officially out of the closet and singing sundown.
  7:24pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Very nice show tonight. Keep sending pledges so WFMU can stay alive, folks.
  7:41pm Billy Jam:

enjoying the show tonite Rob -
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:43pm Your DJs:

Thanks Billy Jam!
  7:43pm Gaylord Fields:

@Leek: You don't have to tell me. After all, my namesake city is located at the top knuckle of Michigan's middle finger.
  7:55pm katie:

does that mean Cheboygan was the other regional name option?
  7:56pm Gaylord Fields:

Katie, you sold me my copy of the Matt Allison 45 at Pier Platters almost 25 years ago. Some things you just never forget.
  8:02pm katie:

Wow. what a memory. I'm sure I was playing it as Bill was muttering about my playing yet more pretty pop songs that sold his records.
  8:04pm Gaylord Fields:

Oh, Bill and his anti-business business policies!
  8:33pm Leek:

Petoskey Fields has a nice ring to it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34pm Your DJs:

Ah, what might have been...
  8:46pm G:

Sleeping Bear Fields
  8:46pm Leek:

Are you guys odd or even?
  8:48pm G:

Everyone connected to WFMU, commenters included, is by definition odd.
  8:52pm Gaylord Fields:

Sure, it's a big joke to you guys, but you just try going through life with a bunch of Yoopers sitting on your head!
  8:56pm Escanaba:

How's the weather down there, Gaylord, NAHNAH :)
  10:10am Cecile:

I resemble that Yooper remark!
