I love Cage's public persona and his music, but in the video he surprisingly and needlessly demeaned Beethoven and Mozart, claiming they sound "the same" where traffic is always different. This is dubious, I think.
	3:39pm 100% real dc pat: Factory: well he's right--traffic IS always different because it's always improvised whereas Mozart and Beethoven aren't. Doesn't necessarily mean they suck--I like them. But I think he has a point.
	3:44pm hubba: we could tlak about iterations of Mozart and Beethoven, making them more indeterminate, reproductions of a base production... or, we could say that traffic is determinate, while sounds may seem indeterminate, there is a base structure that guids what type of sounds are available, time of day, given infrastructure, etc... you're not likely to hear a jet take off, a fire truck roar, and an ice cream man coming down the street form the same place/range... if you are, then i think you're in a Jerry Bruckheimer film.

I think his ability to articulate ideas is all you could generate linguistically when trying to conceptualize dynamics of sound, the position of the composer and audience, and the plausible dialogue one could even engage in. 	5:46pm Night Al: While a student at the University of Florida's Music department back in 1982, one of my classes was held in a professors small dark attic office. One day he gave us the assignment of composing a piece that lacked all melody, structure, and meter. It had to be written on sheet music and ready to be performed by anyone who could read music. I found this very hard. I composed my work and asked the bassoonist to perform it in class. The professor said it was way to structured and melodic. I can play music like some of John Cage's works, but catching it on sheet music eludes me.
