Listener comments!

  3:02pm
G:

Llamentable.
  3:03pm
Matt from Springfield:

Exactly the same as the previous camels, only...um, more tempermental?
  3:03pm
kat330:

Shear horror.
  3:04pm
Matt from Springfield:

Scott Walker's such a great singer--I have no clue why the people of Wisconsin are so irked about him...
  3:04pm
kat330:

Why is FMU spinning so many tracks by the Wisconsin wanker?
  3:04pm
G:

I would have thought Scott Walker was in a better mood than this.
  3:04pm
?:

I think for THAT Scott Walker, it might be sunny today . . .
  3:05pm
Keith in VT:

Llama-doodle?
  3:06pm
Irwin:

"Irked"? They reaffirmed their support.
  3:07pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Keith: Lloodles.
  3:07pm
Jennique:

They have to get to llama school! (Sifl and Olly song)

WOOL
  3:08pm
?:

play 'the old man's back again'!
  3:08pm
Michael:

God they look odd.
  3:09pm
Matt from Springfield:

@kat: I see Ken played "Next" this morning--I first heard that from Fabio, that's an amazing one. In fact Fabio's also a big S. Walker fan, you can expect to hear more from him tomorrow I bet.
  3:09pm
Llamas:

Up periscope!
  3:09pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

Irwin is the 3:00 PM Wednesday guy for as long as he chooses to be. The Wednesday Afternoon Hero!
  3:09pm
kat330:

I like the one llama looking in a different direction, obviously is an "outsider" and hears the beat of a different drummer.
  3:10pm
kat330:

Yes, he launched the show with that Brel gem! Hi, Matt, BTW, long time no type -- well, several days anyway. :)
  3:10pm
Irwin:

That wayward llama's name is "Neil Young."
  3:11pm
Michael:

Llamas!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FbwkkXGmFrI
  3:11pm
kat330:

Of course it is.
  3:11pm
Matt from Springfield:

C, S, N & Y (by heads, L to R)
  3:12pm
Llamas:

Only we harmonize better live than CSNY. Check the Woodstock concert.
  3:12pm
SteveL:

Someone needs to animate the llamas. Soon.
  3:12pm
Jennique:

Neil Young looks like he got a pie to the face.
  3:12pm
kat330:

Kinda looks -- size-wise -- that Young should be Crosby. Hard to tell from the angle.
  3:13pm
kat330:

@Jennique: Heh! Ol' pieface.
  3:14pm
Llamas:

The best shot from that session was us on the zebra crossing at Abbey Road
  3:14pm
Laura L:

Got any Fahrenheit 451 music for us today? RIP Mr. Bradbury.
  3:15pm
kat330:

Crosby's the only one with perked ears.
  3:15pm
Llamas:

Llamas rule, zebras drool
  3:16pm
kat330:

Yeah, Laura. Or eerie, atmospheric carnival music.
  3:18pm
Llamas:

Isn't that actually LLaura?
  3:19pm
kat330:

@Michael: Thanks for that divertissement.

Something Wicked:

  3:20pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Laura L: It's true...at least the RIPs were slowing down briefly from the past couple months, now they're picking up again.
  3:21pm
Matt from Springfield:

"Djaponese"? Crazy! You can't DJ a J unless there's a precedent! Like Django, or Djakarta.
  3:21pm
Scrooge:

RIPs are dead to me
  3:23pm
Matt from Springfield:

RIP off?
  3:24pm
kat330:

Still on the llamas: Nash has interesting markings. Sort of a white soul patch and a white yarmulke (or bird poop) on this head.
  3:25pm
Matt from Springfield:

Pull a Kenny G, and broadcast yourself while vacuuming.
Sing something at the top of your lungs while doing it too.
  3:25pm
Zzebras:

Two can play this game.
  3:26pm
kat330:

HIS head. Even though it could be HER head. Aw, just leave the typo stet.
  3:26pm
Matt from Springfield:

@kat: He adopted his hairstyle while in The Hollies, to cover up that spot.
  3:27pm
Jennique:

They're all wearing shaggy bell bottoms. Maybe one of them should be named Lloyd?
  3:28pm
kat330:

Apparently the girl he shared his umbrella with left him unprotected from pigeon poop.
  3:31pm
kat330:

Does anyone use a portable Internet radio (don't mean in your car)? We had a Grace digital audio box, but it seriously under-performed for us, so it's returned and is history. Want to be able to garden and listen to FMU, so if any recs, I'd appreciate them.
  3:31pm
Craigslist:

Xylophonist wanted for 5 minutes of studio overdubs.
  3:32pm
kat330:

Well, this fits as a slightly eerie tune, though not very carnival.
  3:32pm
bloopy:

somebody i used to knoooowwwwwwwwwww
  3:32pm
Tom L.:

The reason I listen to WFMU is so I DON'T have to listen to this song.
  3:32pm
Mike VL:

You are the finest DJ on this damn station.
  3:33pm
Listening Out There:

Current portable Internet radio for me = iPhone 4s with volume cranked. Sonically challenged, but it works...
  3:34pm
kat330:

@Tom L: Yeah, a bit surprising to hear this here, but Irwin is his own man.

On the I-radio: We do not have/use Smartphones and have no plans to get into that.
  3:35pm
Ike:

I definitely did not expect that song by an obscure Australian called Gotye to become popular. Are they playing it on adult contemporary stations or something?
  3:35pm
kat330:

@Ike: Yep, all over the airwaves around here. (Louisville)
  3:36pm
Michael:

I've got a couple of Logitech Squeezeboxes that I believe can take batteries and be portable. Pretty satisfied with it's performance overall.
  3:36pm
Matt from Springfield:

The David! This is a great "artyfact".

"The Other David" would make a good psych band name, if you're out there listening, OD! :)
  3:37pm
kat330:

Aha, Michael, yes Logitech came up in a search. Reliable? Truly do no use battery power while plugged in? The Grace kept switching to battery power even when on AC. It was crazy.
  3:38pm
kat330:

Good sound, the Squeezeboxes? The Grace was surprisingly decent sound quality.
  3:41pm
Michael:

Dunno - Only use AC with the device. The sound quality was surprisingly ok.
  3:42pm
kat330:

OK, we'll probably go with Logitech since it seems to get decent reviews. Thanks for your input, Michael.
  3:43pm
kat330:

@Matt: I think OD is working overtime on building his pizza boat.
  3:44pm
dale:

i second the squeezebox. awesome sound for a little thing and i like the interface that lets you choose by country, city, genre etc. and pandora is nice on it too. best buy sells them or online of course. mind wants to reboot kinda often, but it hasn't been a problem really.
  3:45pm
kat330:

Thanks, Dale! Confirmation is appreciated.
  3:47pm
Matt from Springfield:

@kat: So then, how would the Logitech compare as a radio while crossing the Atlantic, on a pizza boat without AC power?
  3:48pm
Savory C:

Hope Sandoval.. what have you done..
thats 11 time zones..
  3:50pm
dale:

what was wrong with the grace? best buy had one discounted to fifty bucks and i was gonna grab it for a spare
  3:53pm
common:

damn straight!
  3:53pm
Television Personalities:

I know where David Clayton-Thomas lives.
  3:55pm
Matt from Springfield:

Irwin is taking Archive listening advice from Lizardner Dave! :)
  3:55pm
kat330:

Dale, it could WELL have been the one we were sent only. Purchased through Amazon, seller was Electronics Expo and shipper was Prestige <---- HORRIBLE co. that I wish Amazon would drop. So we probably got a returned or refurbished unit to start with. Don't want to risk trying it out again, esp. if AMZ will just use Prestige to ship it. Also got a bum microphone when it was shipped by Prestige. I think they might be running a "used goods" scam. I dunno.
  3:57pm
dale:

look for a company called c. crane. they make wifi radios too. plus all your shortwave and broadcast band antenna needs
http://www.ccrane.com
  3:57pm
kat330:

Reminds me, Irwin, if correct info about you somewhere -- wiki? -- I'm about 3 weeks older than you, heh! If you don't feel old, well, neither do I.
  3:58pm
Listening Out There:

......I like likes Ting Tings.........
  3:59pm
kat330:

Thanks and will do. Except for the power problems, we liked the Grace just fine.
  4:00pm
Matt from Springfield:

As a young person, I would like to point out the trouble with our youth--not because the youth are "the future", but because they're the future OLD PEOPLE! They're insufferable now, can you imagine when today's youth become OLD PEOPLE themselves?! Just be glad most of you won't be around to deal with them by that point...
  4:01pm
kat330:

[oh, and the reason we're rather resigned to purchase through AMZ is because we have a large gift cert. balance there]
  4:03pm
fatty:

mama smells like pizza=best song ever
  4:03pm
kat330:

When I said I don't care for the "little girl" voice, that doesn't include *actual* little girls. This is great!
  4:04pm
paula pc:

THANK YOU IRWIN for the M Fields
  4:04pm
wow:

Hey, I'm (unfortunately) listening from Laramie Wyoming!
  4:07pm
kat330:

@Matt: Is that a quote or paraphrase from someone other than yourself? Of course, it's important to point out that older people were also probably insufferable as youths.
  4:08pm
kat330:

Wyoming unfortunate? Wow, you've got Yellowstone, fercrimminy!
  4:10pm
Matt from Springfield:

Helen Stone, a new star!
Kind of a dance mix feel, but also Amanda-like stretches in her song! Did that make the premium Irwin?
  4:11pm
Matt from Springfield:

@kat: Hells no, just made it up now, riffing on Irwin's riff on old people!
"Insufferable is forever" :)
  4:13pm
kat330:

That's right. I see nothing age-specific about the frequent rudeness and irresponsibility around US.
  4:13pm
Matt from Springfield:

Wow, thought this was Spike Jones or something! Liking Mr. Butcher here!
  4:16pm
Matt from Springfield:

No mentioning Bourbon without sharing it!!!
  4:20pm
Matt from Springfield:

New My Robot Friend!
  4:20pm
Carmichael:

Hi everyone. I see I missed a chunk of Scott Walker, dammit. Archives ....
  4:21pm
Matt from Springfield:

Hi Carm!
  4:22pm
kat330:

Mr. BBQ! Hope you're not a smoker, btw.
  4:22pm
Carmichael:

Hey ya, Matt.

I also have a kind of perverse like of the Ting Tings. Not normally my cup of tea, but they're odd enough to like.
  4:22pm
kat330:

And to everyone in NYC, hope you're not Big Gulp drinkers.
  4:30pm
Mike East:

I hope no one here drinks Big Gulps. That shit is bad for you. No human needs that amount of sugar and whatever else is in soda these days.
  4:31pm
Doug P:

Why is that your business, Mike? Are you a big nanny like Mayor Doomberg?
  4:32pm
Carmichael:

Save the drama for your llama.
  4:33pm
wow:

All I can say is that the Big Gulp is alive and well here in Laramie....
  4:35pm
kat330:

Myself, I was commiserating with the Californians and Big Apple folks who'll be "inconvenienced" if they do so indulge. I certainly don't promote bad habits, but everyone's free to as much self-destruction as they'd like.
  4:36pm
Carmichael:

I have 99 problems, but soda isn't one of them.
  4:36pm
Drollama:

The law refers to the swig/gulp size, not cup size... No big swigging allowed, but like all laws there are all those loopholes, ike if the ON AIR light is on and the beverage is bourbon.
  4:37pm
kat330:

Carm, I was speaking of the proposed $1/pack cig tax Brown's proposing. You ARE in CA, yes?
  4:37pm
Matt from Springfield:

Does Sexton or Billy do the singing on this album?
Also, I think a certain tune is being ripped off here. Klaus Beyer should sue.
  4:38pm
Irwin:

I'm on it, Matt. Klaus will be furious!
  4:40pm
Carmichael:

@kat: yes, a few blocks from the dome. That measure failed 51-49.
  4:42pm
kat330:

Ah, guess I'm not keeping up w/the news.
  4:43pm
kat330:

This also gets Lullville airplay aplenty (or did).
  4:44pm
Matt from Springfield:

Great sunny pop in this pop. It's really brightening my day.
  4:46pm
kat330:

Oh, Matt, did you have any tornado damage nearby? My news sense seems lacking of late, but I thought I heard DC environs had a bad night last Friday late?
  4:46pm
Matt from Springfield:

And I'm not keeping up with popular airplay--Semisonic (new one??), Gotye...no clue what if anything is trending on terrestrial radio. Listen to FMU, they'll tell us these songs, and then not overplay them. Keep it fresh.
  4:46pm
temperamental drawbridge:

this semisonic is a bittersweet symphony
  4:46pm
Ike:

@Doug P.@4:31, I could argue that it's Mike's business (and mine) because he (and I, and you, if you're American) have to pay for some people's health care when they get obese from all those sugary drinks, then default on their mind-bogglingly exorbitant medical bills from our bloated, greedy health care industry. That said, only Emperor Mike can get away with this kind of thing, just like only Nixon can go to China.

Thoughts?
  4:47pm
Mike East:

@Doug P - No, not my business, and I don't really care...except for a basic hope that people get healthier. I'm not in favor of legislation dictating people's health choices, I'm in favor of people making better health choices.
  4:47pm
Matt from Springfield:

They said there were 9 small tornadoes around the area--no widespread damage though.
  4:48pm
Matt from Springfield:

Closing Time - Podcastin' Time
  4:49pm
Matt from Springfield:

Thanks Irwin. YES! And Klaus comment name check! TY!
  4:49pm
kat330:

@td: My sweet lord! You're right, very similar riff. Just tempo and outlook are vastly different.
  4:50pm
Matt from Springfield:

Hmmm, Leon Russell's Daughters of Albion. Worth an investigation.
  4:50pm
Carmichael:

You mean "He's So Fine"?? :-)
  4:50pm
Listener Dave from Seattle:

Wait, there is a radio show happening?
  4:52pm
kat330:

@Carm: Exactly. There's nothing new under the sunny pop.
  4:53pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Seattle Dave: Shhhhhhh! I wish people would stop mentioning that! Now commenters are going to be distracted, listening to stuff while typing.

@Carm: LOL. Incidentally, Jonathan King is a douche.
  4:54pm
kat330:

Was this a leftover from Ken's show?
  4:55pm
Laura L:

Achoo
  4:56pm
Irwin:

I knew you'd love this, LL.
  4:56pm
Matt from Springfield:

Loving Lindy as well! Almost works as a PSA, followed by an announcement to get you to see your doctor.
  4:56pm
Matt from SF:

Weird, I've had most of these.
  4:57pm
Listening Out There:

....funny...now I'm itchy....
  4:57pm
chris:

Itchy, all of a sudden.
  4:58pm
chris:

glad its not just me
  4:59pm
Listening Out There:

...Hey, I caught it from you :)
  5:02pm
Matt from Springfield:

Communicable via keystroke!
  5:03pm
kat330:

@Ike: I'm of two minds on the whole "cost to our health system" irresponsibility argument. Because, OTOH, you have well-insured folks -- even mostly healthy people -- being given expensive, totally unnecessary tests and prescriptions, ALL BECAUSE they have good coverage. The system is sicker than the populace.
  5:03pm
Carmichael:

Station ID, Irwin, STATION ID!!!
  5:05pm
Philosopher:

@Carmichael: Identity is a highly contested issue.
  5:11pm
Drollama:

Carm, No need to be a Narc, man. The log says he did it. I can see the log, it says he did it.
  5:11pm
FCC:

Irwin's gone rogue...get him in your crosshairs, you are authorized to take the shot.
  5:13pm
FCC:

Gosh darnit, you only hit the vacuum!! Abort, abort!!!
  5:14pm
kat330:

Did Lindy list "Irwin in your crosshairs" as one of those itchy CDs?
  5:15pm
Listener Dave from Seattle:

Irwin has turned into Fredricks
  5:16pm
MD:

The "OLD CODGER" taught me that!!!!!! The lap top thing!!!!
  5:16pm
Edison:

Damn I just used a hammer to fix my clam shell
  5:17pm
kat330:

Oooh, is this a prophetic tune about our esteemed host? :)
  5:18pm
Venus:

Leave my clam shell alone TAE!
  5:19pm
Matt from Springfield:

You need a hammer on a clam shell, because those shells are hard. Oyster shells too.
  5:21pm
kat330:

At least you get pearls of wisdom from some oyster shells.
  5:23pm
Mike East:

I thought a shucker?
  5:26pm
Matt from Springfield:

Marmalade! Apple Marmalade, since they were signed to the Beatles label.
  5:26pm
Matt from Springfield:

Play something by the band Kitty next :)
  5:26pm
kat330:

Plenty of rain in the sunny pop.
  5:28pm
Matt from Springfield:

Rain is still sunny when it's pop: Beatles "Rain", Spector's "Walking In The Rain", Badfinger's "Walking In The Rain" (Apple labelmates!)
  5:29pm
Matt from Springfield:

Spinal Tap's Kinks-like number "Rainy Day Sun"!
  5:31pm
kat330:

@Mike: You mean like
An oyster just off of Nantucket
Was longing for someone to shuck it ?
  5:32pm
kat330:

AND, to bring us in a circle (not full, but close) Bus Stop and umbrella sharing with Nash. :)
  5:33pm
kat330:

My Bobby D's "Rainy Day Women," too.
  5:33pm
Carmichael:

The Move's "Flowers in the Rain".
  5:35pm
Carmichael:

Slim Harpo's "Rainin' in My Heart".
  5:36pm
kat330:

When Irwin spins the Kronos, it also satisfies by jones for classical music -- thanks, Irwin! [A440, RIP]
  5:37pm
kat330:

My fingertips have Laura's cold.
  5:38pm
kat330:

Peebles/Turner "I Can't Stand the Rain."
  5:38pm
Mike East:

@kat330 - yes, that'll do.
  5:40pm
Listening Out There:

kat330 -- Is A440 discontinued?
  5:40pm
kat330:

The l'East I could do -- seriously. ;)
  5:41pm
kat330:

It's your sad LOT and mine, yes.... Though it was never long enough at one hour IAE. Maybe it will be reincarnated as a 2-hour program on GTDR or something.
  5:42pm
Bad Ronald:

Hendrix - Rainy Day Dreamaway
Waits - Rain Dogs
Dylan - Rainy Day Women #12 & 35

kat330 - Sorry to hear that, but thanks. Like other stations, classical stations tend to have playlists...and I just scream at hearing Pictures at an Exhibition or equivalent over & over again. Would be nice if A440 returned (hint to wifmoo programming manager...)

the glowing one:

Washington Phillips was ahead of his time. ;)

kat330:

I love Prince!
  5:46pm
Matt from Springfield:

Amyyyyyyyy!!!!!!
  5:47pm
kat330:

Hard to be a full-grown woman and NOT be enamored with Prince.
  5:49pm
kat330:

Yeah, LOT, the classical station around here bites.

Oh, this is nice.
  5:50pm
Matt from Springfield:

Amy followed by Linda Perhacs!!
(This is what Irwin was referring to a couple weeks ago: LISTEN, LEARN, and turn this ALL THE WAY UP!! Earbuds maxed out here!)
  5:51pm
kat330:

I adore harmonies of 4ths and 5ths.
  5:53pm
Drollama:

kat330, Lots of people pay to go to fancy music schools that teach parallel 5ths is "wrong". Good on you for forgetting that part or not caring!
  5:54pm
kat330:

Heh!!!
  5:55pm
Matt from Springfield:

Don't know what those are called but I love those double-tracked harmonies!
Going to listen to that again when I get home!
  5:55pm
kat330:

Not a matter of forgetting or caring -- just trusting that what tickles my ear can't be a bad thing.
  5:56pm
Carmichael:

Ray Conniff is so hep.
  5:56pm
Matt from Springfield:

I know "minor 6ths" because I asked my guitar teacher how to play the Beatles "Flying"--the finger work is tough but it sounds great.
  5:57pm
the glowing one:

Hm, this Ray Conniff bears a striking resemblance to James Last. Must be a coincidence. That their music is kinda similar must also be a coincidence.
  5:57pm
kat330:

Drollama, those harmonies used a lot in early music, like Guillaume de Machaut, and I've always been drawn to it. But there's also the band X, who use 4ths all the time.
  5:57pm
Matt from Springfield:

Triumphant conclusion to this program!
I'll be crossing over to 7SD for boiler talk..

Thanks Irwin! Have a good night everyone!
  5:58pm
kat330:

Yes, thanks, Irwin. Later!
  5:59pm
Carmichael:

Thanks, palley.

H. Felton:

I bet the Wisconsin election results made the Old Codger uncharacteristically happy. One might say voters rejected the Dems as if they were going out of style.
  10:22pm
Irwin:

Mr. Felton: The news hasn't yet reached Courtney. He's still catching up on newspapers from 1952.
