Listener comments!

  9:01am fred von helsing:

Prepare for adventure...
  9:01am Patrick:

merry Christmas!
  9:03am earwax:

Those soviet amusement parks were real fun
  9:04am Jack:

I am using my mouse to clean the screaming man's teeth.
  9:04am F0F0 (~_^):

Hi Ken, listeners, commenters! Glad to be here and hopefully the lyme disease symptoms tribute is forever gone now and you are feeling much better!

Feliz Cinco de Mayo!
  9:06am Patrick:

is the screaming guy bill nye the science guy?
Avatar 🚽 Swag For Life Member 9:07am Ken:

Hi all! Thanks FoFo, the Lyme is a little better today but that ain't sayin' much!
Patrick - Yeah, it's Bill Nye. Good eye
  9:07am Parq:

I can't stop watching the skateboard flip-off.
  9:09am Caryn:

The Johnny Boy gif is looks as if someone made a version of "The Prestige" in the 1970s.
  9:09am Dan B From Upstate:

Good morning, Ken. Happy Lyme Disease Awareness Month!
  9:11am Mark:

I've been kind of enjoying the new Spiritualized
  9:12am Cheri Pi:

Me too, I'm not into them like some people but I could see myself picking up this album.
  9:12am Sheriff Buford T. Justice:

What we're dealing with here is a complete lack of respect for the law
Avatar 🚽 Swag For Life Member 9:13am Ken:

Yeah that Johnny Boy gif came from a Japanese anime gif. I think they's zapping a sacrificial caucasian stoner from a monster movie. Anybody see Cabin in the Woods?
  9:13am BSI:

...lurking in the shadows, quietly sharpening the hamsters...
  9:15am Caryn:

I think this is the first track from the new Spiritualized album that I really like. The others have been kinda meh.
"Cabin in the Woods" is really good. And on a "Prestige"-related movie note, I'm seriously rooting for John Blake to turn out to be Azrael in the new Batman movie.
  9:16am Mark:

wow, ain't heard this in a long time
  9:16am Pablo Picasso:

Asshole's FCC safe?
  9:17am Mark:

hey Pablo, just be happy you were never called an asshole
  9:18am obfucs8:

Were words spoken btwn John Allen's show and this one, today? Hm.
  9:18am Parq:

Yeah, The Cabin in the Woods has its flaws, but I liked it a lot.
Avatar 🚽 Swag For Life Member 9:18am Ken:

Yeah. Asshole, when applied to mean "jerk" is FCC safe.
  9:19am Pablo Picasso:

So can you say "asshole off"?
Avatar 🚽 Swag For Life Member 9:20am Ken:

Yeah the Spiritualized CD is mixed. Just buy the good tracks. Cabin in the Woods was really fun.
  9:21am fred von helsing:

I would def not buy beef assholey
  9:23am Caryn:

Wait, so a doctor talking about someone's anus using the word "asshole" would get fined, but you can use the word as an insult? Very "logical", FCC...
It was discussed on tv that you can say "fucking" if you use it as an expletive, but not if you use it as a verb. Is that true? Because seriously, these rules make no sense.
Also, after having a tesla coil shower, we now seem to be having a static bath in the gifs.
  9:23am Lewis:

Kudos to @mark!! (and I assume @Pablo P)
  9:24am Caryn:

@FVH: when visiting Jamaica, would you try some asshole chicken?
  9:25am pgw in mntclr:

yeay Laura...i love this song
  9:26am Caryn:

Is this gif from "Bob's Burgers"? Because it's certainly the same style of drawing.
Avatar 🚽 Swag For Life Member 9:27am Ken:

Caryn - What you say about "fucking" on TV was true once five years ago, but only for 5 months before the FCC reversed itself.
  9:28am Sofa King:

Can you say "Sofa King Great"?
  9:29am Caryn:

@Ken: so is the word completely banned now? Or okay as a verb but not as an expletive? Seriously, FCC, you annoy me.
  9:31am Bill G:

All Intel-architecture assembler programs should have both a near queue and a "Far queue!"
Avatar 🚽 Swag For Life Member 9:31am Ken:

Its totally banned now. Supreme Court decision expected soon related to the matter.
  9:31am Mark:

it was ridiculous that the movie "The King's Speech" was rated R solely for the scene in which the King is encouraged to shout the word fuck several times
  9:31am obfucs8:

Speed reading techniques take the piss out of the individually weighted word.
Avatar 🚽 Swag For Life Member 9:32am Ken:

Bill G, that was THE NERDIEST JOKE EVER. Congrats.
  9:33am Cecile:

Good morning, all!
  9:33am Dan B From Upstate:

I have a nerdy joke. There are only 10 kinds of people in this world. Those who understand binary, and those who don't.
  9:34am Caryn:

Yep, this week's edition of "Ken's Nerd Corner" has begun nicely.
  9:34am northguineahills:

One of the better MBV remixes.
  9:34am Cecile:

haa haah haa
That LOL dog. I call doggie territory marking "pee-mail."
  9:35am Caryn:

Oh, Leslie Howard in "Of Human Bondage"... sigh.
  9:35am Cheri Pi:

Cecile, baby!
  9:36am Dave B:

The firewall guys at work are a little over zealous. The "Experts Exchange" website used to be blocked, thinking it was "Expert Sexchange"
  9:36am JMD:

Dan B. It's just 6.37AM out here on the west coast. I had to read your joke three times and then I laughed my head off. Thanks!
  9:36am Cecile:

Pi!
Did you hear back from Di?

Caryn, I hated that f'ing book. Almost as much as a Separate Peace.
  9:37am Cecile:

I used to do that at WCBN when I was PO'd.
  9:38am Vivian:

Oh dear, is that new NY&CH that bad?
  9:38am Caryn:

@Cecile: oh, not a fan of the book myself. But Howard + Bette Davis = good movie.
  9:39am Cecile:

I'll have to check it out.
I'd love to see a good movie about The Good Soldier. The most twisted book ever.
  9:39am BDR:

Ken, was the Neil Young the *Oh, Susanna* which is a cross between Nick Cave's *Dig Lazarus Dig* and *Venus*? Cause it does suck.
  9:40am ricardo montalban:

There used to be a Reggae DJ here in Portland that would completely fade out the bed anytime he would talk, bring it way up during pauses, bring it all the way down again whenever he'd speak, which was really really annoying, not to mention stupid sounding.
  9:40am Vivian:

Sorry, meant to say 'is the new NY&CH that bad?'. Keep hoping that they will tour beyond the Outside Lands appearance.
Avatar 🚽 Swag For Life Member 9:40am Ken:

hahahaha BDR - Yeah, it was! So awful.
  9:41am Cecile:

He just needs to take a break and work with someone like the Oh Sees to get his mojo back.
  9:41am dc pat:

too lazy to go back and read all the comments so for me the day starts....NOW.
  9:41am NS Andy:

On Monday night's As It Happens, a nationally sponsored radio show on the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corp.), host and journalist Carol Off read aloud a selection from human rights activist Dr. Samantha Nutt's Damned Nations: Greed, Guns, Armies and Aid. Nutt's text was recounting a wartime predicament in which she was hiding from some paramilitaries and Off spoke in her reading of that text "... I'm fucked" to a live audience. Canada is in some serious trouble with Stephen Harper for a PM but it's still way ahead in so many respects.
  9:42am Rob W:

In terms of the old DJ technique of riding the fader on music beds: When I did a radio show one summer long ago in the UK, the mixing board had a built in feature where the music level bumped up when you stopped talking, and then ducked under when you talked. So the technique was pretty ubiquitous there and then... and yes, it could get pretty annoying!
  9:43am pgw in mntclr:

"He just needs to take a break and work with someone like the Oh Sees to get his mojo back."

that would be cool.
  9:43am still b/p:

Knotting the threads -- Peace, fuck and understanding: A student reading aloud from A Separate Peace in our sophomore hs class was admonished for including "fuck," until the teacher realized his own edition was censored, with underlines substituted for expletives, while some of our books left them in print..
  9:44am Cecile:

He did some great work when he was in his crazy old dad period hanging with Pearl Jam and Sonic Youth.
Avatar 🚽 Swag For Life Member 9:44am Ken:

Yeah. in the mid-70s so many radio station's had that musicbed thing happening automatically. It was State of the Art!
  9:45am Cheri Pi:

Cecile-No not yet. Part of me thinks she's just trying to digest the most innovative, life altering manuscript ever written. I'm sure she'll emerge eventually when she's ready to transform rock music as we all know it.
  9:46am Mark:

this almost sounds like it samples the mellotron from "Watcher of the Skies"
  9:46am Cecile:

That makes sense. But just in case, let's nag her charmingly about it tomorrow...
  9:46am ricardo montalban:

I think that's what this guy was trying to emulate, the auto-ducking thing, only sadly, he was doing it manually on an old-school board.
  9:47am fred von helsing:

Hey, 70s radio stations thought carts were State of the Art. Well, actually maybe they were.
  9:48am Cecile:

They bailed my butt out many times back in the day.
  9:48am Neg-guh-tor:

Peace, love, and soul, bitches!
  9:48am Caryn:

@Cecile: "The Good Soldier" was made into a British tv movie in 1981. Have never seen it, but most people consider it a good version. Available to buy, BTW: http://www.amazon.com/The-Good-Soldier/dp/B007EMEFY4
  9:49am F0F0 (:

Is FCC always about punishing? What about rewards? What if you say out loud FOR LOVE SAKE! on national live radio? At the very least you should get some serious FCC discounts or coupons redeemable at your local radio Dj store.
  9:49am Cecile:

thanks, Caryn. Maybe the Netflix has it.

To be perfectly honest, one of the few books in my English Lit major days I could not put down.
  9:50am Sam:

What about cool radio station nicknames, like the last letter with the number - WFMU would be U-91
  9:50am northguineahills:

This pretty straight-forward hiphop for Audio Sports compared to the torture garden on quaaludes being whipped by beats I'm used to hearing.
  9:52am Sam:

I'm with FOFO, the FCC should use carrots as well as sticks to encourage socially acceptable programming. You should get extra credit for doing bland feel-good dribble.
  9:52am Cecile:

wow.
awesome description ngh.
  9:53am Cheri Pi:

I just wish the Cleveland 5 could have benefited from our wisdom and made a rock album instead of trying to blow up the Great Cuyahoga (again). I know their pain, being so close to the MI border, but rocking out is always the answer kiddies!! The only bombs they should have been dropping were the first 2 albums they made.
  9:54am Cecile:

well, off to a meeting, back in a bit.
Avatar 🚽 Swag For Life Member 9:55am Ken:

  9:57am Mark:

damn there's nothing I hate more than when someone at work schedules a meeting on Wednesday morning
  9:57am JMD:

Re: radio station nicknames. When I was growing up I listened to KBOS-The BOSS! However it was only the boss of a small part of the central San Joaquin valley.
  10:00am Michael:

Speaking of radio - maybe Ken can do a on-air salute to Pete Fornatale
  10:00am Vicki:

I'm so jealous you're playing Bingo on 7 Second Delay tonight. I think in-studio detention listener bingo would be fantastic for another show, although I've no clue how you'd give out the bingo cards
  10:00am Mark:

what would Eddie Hazell do? words to live by
  10:01am F0F0 (:

But you know what Sam? I think in the near future, with all these advances in neuroscience and quantum computing, we will be able to swtich ON or OFF our brains to block or censor things our senses capture fromthe reality. Yeah, like when you use the Google's Safe Search button. Parents would just then switch ON their kids' brains! "Enhanced reality". And they will hear FLOWERs instead of the FUCKs. And like a in that greek film Kynodontas (Dog teeth, Caryn?), kids would grow up as complete retards.
  10:01am Caryn:

Huh, for a bit I read the title of this track as "What would Eddie Haskell do?" And if anyone follows the adage "What would Klaus Kinski do?", I suspect they have ended up making very weird decisions during their life.
  10:02am Bootsy:

What wouldn't Eddie Hazell do?
  10:03am Webhamster Henry:

In Hartford CT, you could hear WPOP "W-POP! goes the music, music music." http://www.wdrcobg.com/wpop.html
  10:03am fred von helsing:

got a strange craving for kathy mcginty
  10:03am Sam:

The question is once our experiences are being censored all the time will we even be aware of it? Children will grow up with that and never know otherwise!
  10:04am Vicki:

nobody else gives a damn about bingo but I do so I'm writing this as well
  10:04am Sam:

The worst part about being brainwashed is that you're convinced you haven't been
  10:04am Caryn:

@F0F0: "Dogtooth". Technically, a bicuspid.
  10:05am glenn:

Is this Michael Gira spoken word stuff from the mid-80's or an anti-smoking PSA?
  10:06am dc pat:

oh, no. smoke talk again..
  10:07am BSI:

mescal con gusano!
  10:07am Caryn:

I'm excited about bingo too!
Also, I'm glad WFMU is not your average radio station, because I fear they'd have some "WFMU! FM radio for you!" slogan going on, if they were.
  10:08am Vicki:

WFMU: Not Ashamed To Play Bingo
  10:09am Caryn:

WFMU: the nursing homes' choice.

I remember a few years ago when it was time for the UK Census to take place a lot of people wrote "Jedi" for religion, which would have been delightful if there had been enough to have our own churches and representation.

OH YEAH! I still have one cup of prokofiev left!! Thanks Sam
Avatar 🚽 Swag For Life Member 10:32am Ken:

Chris, that organ music was "the Magic Organ" doing "Tacky." Caryn - the Prokofiev is a loop from ROmeo & Juliet: Tjhe Montagues and the Capulets
  10:33am Sam:

Not to be confused with Tchaikowsky's shmaltzier "Romeo and Juliet"
  10:33am Vag birth captain:

  10:34am Caryn:

@Vicki: ooh, I remember reading about that. Nice.
@Ken: I know, I've adviced other board members about that before. But it was nice having that followed by "Withers in the Whist" with its "Troika" melody.
  10:34am Sam:

When I was working for the French railways we used to sing "L'Internationale" for real (non-ironically)
  10:34am chris:

Thanks Ken. So that is actually a record you played on a record player? So great

My May 1 in central Estonia (ex-SSR) was entirely unironically unsocialist. The Lenin pin on my hat got zero comments.
  10:37am Caryn:

The Fonteyn-Nureyev version of the Prokofiev R&J is still the definitive version, as far as I'm concerned.
  10:38am Caryn:

I wonder if any May Day celebrations included a wicker man? With or without a cop inside.
  10:39am Sam:

People in Estonia are more concerned about Putin and the Russian mafia than communism.
  10:39am dc pat:

Sam: not the music so much as the dance/acting. Pretty wrenching performances.
  10:40am Caryn:

Jucifer: Lucifer wearing Juicy sweatpants.
  10:40am fred von helsing:

oh there were scary-looking russian-speakers everywhere. no fedoras or gucci loafers tho. or concrete galoshes.
  10:42am Caryn:

Just went to a job interview this morning for a job checking Russian visas.
Avatar 🚽 Swag For Life Member 10:43am Ken:

Caryn - No!! Self Hating Jewish Satanists, like Yours Truly! I like Jewcifer! Im so happy that they're good. Now they need to go back to the correct spelling of it: Jewcifer. Not Jucifer. JESUS!
  10:43am Caryn:

I'm so in the mood for this song. And the gif is lovely too.
  10:46am PMD:

Morning Ken! The morning starts now for me, though I did take time to peruse comments unlike dc pat...
  10:46am Mike East:

I like the image of Satan in Juicy sweatpants better.
  10:46am ?:

Didn't Gwar defeat Jewcifer on 2006's "Beyond Hell"?
  10:47am Cecile:

everyone plays bingo here. It's in the bars, not just the nursing homes.
  10:48am Caryn:

Ah, Finnish krautrock! Although I prefer the term "space rock" for them.
And I don't see why Satan can't be both Jewish and wearing Juicy sweatpants.
And yay, "Freaks" gif!
  10:48am Dave B:

forgot to sign in....
  10:49am Schlitzie:

Gooble Goble!
  10:50am fred von helsing:

Rättö ja Lehtisalo a coupla weeks ago at Korjaamo. They saved the total heavy stuff for the finale.
  10:50am Andrew Waterloo:

Did Gwar drown Jucifer in Jello?
  10:52am Dave B:

HAIL SEITAN!

  10:53am dc pat:

  10:53am F0F0 (:

the Frog song!
  10:54am Caryn:

@Dave B: which explains the "environmentalists and vegetarians are Devil's minions" theory
  10:54am Cecile:

is the burping over yet? Let me know.
  10:55am fred von helsing:

A Brit buddy carried a digital recorder around for a year recording all his farts. It made the ultimate perfect Christmas gift to his brother.
  10:55am dc pat:

Cecile: yes it's over. C'mon back
  10:56am F0F0 (:

It's over Cecile. Trust me. *burp*
  10:56am earwax:

@cecile I'm with you...removed my earbuds
  10:56am still b/p:

In Revenge of the Nerds, both belches in the Homecoming Carnival competition were unsatisfying.
  10:57am Cecile:

now there's dry heaving. great
  10:57am dc pat:

I had to take my buds out because I'm laughing so hard...jeeze I'm and idiot!
  10:58am dc pat:

"an idiot" see?
  10:58am Cecile:

listening to ac/dc on Pandora. Be back in a while.
  10:58am bb:

  10:58am Mark:

  11:00am fred von helsing:

  11:01am dc pat:

  11:02am Vivian:

Lana Del Rey? She is still around?
  11:02am BSI:

puppieez!
  11:03am fred von helsing:

Nina Hagen on the Sneezaphone? Do tell!
  11:03am kurts:

I'm pretty sure I heard on Diane K's show the lead singer of Caninus is no longer with us
  11:03am dc pat:

vegan dashi is done I think. hmmm, I need some noodles... BOOTY BANK!
  11:04am mike noble in nyc:

  11:05am Vivian:

dc pat, you had me at vegan..how do you make vegan dashi?
  11:06am TTTT:

God I love this song. I've listened to it around 20 times this week.
  11:06am TTTT:

God I love this song. I've listened to it around 20 times this week.
  11:07am dc pat:

working with some ideas. 1 oz dried porcini shrooms + big piece of kombu. Pour hot water over, let sit. Bring to boil remove kombu, boil 15 min or so. not perfect but it's ok for now.
  11:07am Cecile:

will be back once Rakim is done with this rap. We don't interrupt Rakim.
  11:08am dc pat:

NINA!
  11:09am Cecile:

What about some miso right toward the end? to give it that salty tang, pat. Simmer it in there in the last 3 minutes and then use iit as a base.

okay, I'm out again.
  11:09am erich von stroeheim:

I have the weirdest boner right now
  11:10am Hream:

Hahahaha
  11:10am dc pat:

Cecile: this is just for the dashi base. After this is done, yeah miso, green onions, ginger, noodles, bacon--no WAIT!
  11:12am dc pat:

ich habe ein schnupfen, hatschi
  11:13am Sam:

"This booty is not worth the booty it's printed on!"
Well put, Ken
  11:14am northguineahills:

damn, dc pat, you read my mind, except I'm making udon w/ kombu, bella mushrooms, chilis, sesame oil, fish sauce, sesame seeds, and topped off w/ a raw egg (that cooks in the hot soup in the bowl).
  11:15am Cecile:

But I'm saying fortify the dashi with a little miso before you make miso soup. Kind of fake the bonito taste a little.
  11:16am fred von helsing:

That's exactly how all Finns pronounce it
  11:16am Caryn:

Hey, Ken, nice job on the word "kokonaiskesto"! Pretty much the correct pronunciation.
  11:16am dc pat:

ok OK Cecile, sheesh! No, that's a good idea...

ngh: you're a smarter man than I...
  11:18am dc pat:

oops, actually it's "Ich habe Schnupfen"
  11:19am Cecile:

hahahaha.
  11:19am dc pat:

can I unload my neighbors unwanted (by me) vehicles?
  11:20am F0F0 (:

I found Finnish is pronounced more or like Spanish but that's still not enough for me to understand Elakaleiset. :/
  11:20am Kim Kardashian:

I donate my Ferrari. Oh Ken...
  11:22am KevinfromBayRidge:

Sorry Ken, My '92 Previa (217,000 miles) went to Cash for Clunkers in 2009. Blame it on Obama!
  11:22am fred von helsing:

eläkeläiset (umlautiness) with "ä" like cäts in häts. repeat!
  11:25am dc pat:

friend told me Finnish is more like Estonian whereas Swedish and Norwegian is all hoogen floogen shlagen
Avatar 🚽 Swag For Life Member 11:27am Ken:

It is true! You donmt have to donate cars you yourself own!
Avatar 🚽 Swag For Life Member 11:28am Ken:

You can donate other people's cars. But it's a different number. Call 1-877-555-3662 and ask for "Johnny."
  11:29am dc pat:

good, I'll be calling in to donate about 50 SUVs...
11:29am John Greaves & Peter Blegvad:

May we please hear "The Only Song"?
  11:30am Vicki:

yes, I want to hear that too
  11:30am Cecile:

Can you play the Fun Boy 3's verison of Our Lips are Sealed? The template for the somber versions.
  11:31am Dan B From Upstate:

This cover is awesome.
  11:32am fred von helsing:

@dcpat both lands will cringe at that. the languages are kith 'n kin but estonian is incomprehensible clipped syllables with a pile of teutonic stirred in spoken in a bursty singsong and in comparison finnish just sorta rambles on and monotonically
  11:33am Mark:

keep in mind that the IRS scrutinizes car donations very carefully
  11:34am stone phillips:

irs v wfmu smackdown: film at 11
  11:35am KevinfromBayRidge:

@Mark. Sounds like this comes from one who really knows!
  11:36am BSI:

That would be just a wee programming error, then.
  11:37am IRS:

We're the sole collection agency for a company running a trillion dollar yearly deficit. You're expecting us to be loosey goosey?
  11:37am Dan B From Upstate:

BSI wins.
  11:38am Mark:

actually I don't speak from experience
  11:39am Johnny:

Call wid da good stuff. No shit cars. Dont waste my fuckin time. Got it?
  11:39am KevinfromBayRidge:

Gittin' very Soupy Sales-y , Ken!
  11:41am Smelly Old Hobo:

Listening to Ken say "Hey, Baby" makes me feel odd.
  11:42am dc pat:

Ken, where'd you get the dead Polish soldiers gif? I saw a bunch of these somewhere but can't remember where.
  11:46am Kevin from Canada:

Ack! What's next--Bob Dylan xmas songs? I'll donate already! Make it stop!
Avatar 🚽 Swag For Life Member 11:46am Ken:

DCPat, I tweeted to that guy's page from the FMU account a few days ago. Cant recall his name. His stuff is amazing. I got a few more that I had to hold off on posting until the end of the show because they are so large, filewise. But here they come!!

  11:54am dc pat:

  11:55am meghan:

We have a winner! The worst version of this song!
  11:56am Mark:

there is no bad version of this song!
  11:56am Nathan:

Fun Fact: I've been to the same public toilet where George got busted for lewd conduct in Beverly Hills... just went for a pee though.
  11:57am Mark:

why just a pee, George wasn't there?
  11:58am Athena:

I was born out of the head of my father, Zeus.
  11:59am Nathan:
