Good integration of kitty photo with an Irwin-style headline.
Incidentally, Amy is such a GREAT photographer, as well as a singer and songwriter!

Irwin, you didn't pronounce "Nicaragua" correctly! I hate it when DJs do that. What an amateur.
  3:28pm
Matt from Springfield:

They scheduled 20 minutes of their show for Lou Reed? Not a smart idea...

this is too brilliant

was that like the daughter of Amanda?
  3:45pm
Alison Porchnik:

Kiku- I only intended to take it out on the DJ. But you're right. Is it that obvious I'm having stomach trouble again?
  3:49pm
Eric:

@Alison: sorry I missed it, did he mispronounce the Spanish pronunciation or the English pronunciation?
  3:49pm
kiku:

....or ,,, perhaps ,,,el guapo ,,, is it that you are turning forty today ????
  3:52pm
Irwin:

She means I didn't follow the NPR pronunciation style guide.
  3:53pm
Matt from Springfield:

Moogy Spirit!
  3:54pm
Carmichael:

Hello Irwin, and aloha to the others. Except for Lou Reed, who won't be within earshot today anyway. Guaran damn teed.
  3:55pm
Alison Porchnik:

@ Eric- He mispronounced the Spanish pronunciation.
@Kiku - I'm a few years past 40. And FWIW, I was quite excited to hit that milestone.
  3:56pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Carm: The only celebrity guests to show up to the UCB Theater are those who've never heard of 7SD. As Lou Reed is often listed as a WFMU fan, he probably knows and consequently will never show up.
  3:57pm
Carmichael:

And what happened to Gary War?! I was excited about his performing this evening.
  3:57pm
Caryn:

Dick Clark died... and here was me thinking he was an immortal or robot of some kind. :(
  3:58pm
Alison Porchnik:

If it's turkey ham radio, it's ok.
  3:59pm
ethylmormon:

the ham has to be kosher
  4:00pm
Matt from Springfield:

Once again, a death learned about through WFMU. RIP Dick.
  4:01pm
Matt from Springfield:

In the US, HAM radio is not permitted for the kosher/halal.
In Britain however, 'AM radio is all right.
  4:02pm
Alison Porchnik:

Sparkling wit, Matt!
  4:02pm
Woo:

I did some radio and always asked guests about their experiences with Dick Clark (when appropriate) and everyone had nothing but good things to say about the man.
  4:02pm
Caryn:

Heh, Matt. Only for cockney DJs, though.
  4:04pm
Caryn:

I think Gary heard it was going to be "rat night" on 7SD and cancelled.
  4:05pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Alison: Besides 'amateur radio, AM radio is also fine. Obviously the issue lies with American hamateur radio :)
  4:06pm
Matt from Springfield:

If hampsters can talk, will they speak over hampstateur radio?
  4:08pm
G:

About the immortal Dick Clark: The SCTV skit from circa 1980 was probably closer to the reality.
  4:10pm
Caryn:

Speaking of RIPs, has any DJ done a salute to Leon Botha yet? He died on Sunday.
  4:13pm
mike noble in dc:

Kurt Heasley, prince of weird.
  4:13pm
T-Zero:

Didn't Leon Botha die last year in June?
  4:14pm
mike noble in dc:

He gave quite a nice performance at the chickfactor anniversary show in Arlington. But weird.
  4:16pm
Caryn:

@T-Zero: oh, yeah... sorry about that. Thought it sounded weird. My friend sent me that news together with the Dick Clark one for some reason. Didn't check the date properly. Sigh... I need a nap.
  4:16pm
mike noble in dc:

And do I hear a certain Lancaster musician's backing vocals on that lilys track?
  4:17pm
Irwin:

@Mike: YES! Good ear.
  4:19pm
T-Zero:

@Caryn: That's okay. The only reason I remembered is because he had progeria, which is something really rare
  4:20pm
Braveness23:

Cool song this 'Light Emerges'!
  4:23pm
Matt from Springfield:

Trippy Akron Family! Lovin' it!
  4:25pm

cute kitty, MIGHTY HUNTER!!!
  4:26pm

But he didn't look a day over 45.
  4:26pm
Cute Kitty:

OBLIGATE CARNIVORE!
  4:28pm
Matt from Springfield:

"Psychotic Reactions and Carburetor Dung"! Excellent book, great assortment of Lester Bangs articles! And yes, the Dick Clark interview is very interesting. I rec as well!
  4:29pm
common:

that book was my main text when i was teaching forget what i was teaching
  4:29pm
john:

There is a second book of Lester Bangs' writing.

http://www.amazon.com/Main-Lines-Blood-Feasts-Taste/dp/0375713670/
  4:29pm
Alison Porchnik:

@ kitty - Not necessarily. My cat is extremely satisfied by a vegan diet of lentils and concentrated wheat gluten.
  4:32pm
Eric:

I'm sure if I opened a can of tuna in front of your cat she would react extermely enthusiastically
  4:32pm
Carmichael:

I wonder if Ken heeded my advice this morning about handing out knives as door prizes at 7SD.
  4:34pm
Matt from Springfield:

Wow, Irwin loves Lester Bangs' writing, a new break complete with bed music, just to announce it to the world!
  4:37pm
Matt from Springfield:

Derek Richmond sounds Chiltonesque.

Is that an appropriate -esque? Well it is now. Chiltonesqueâ„¢!
  4:38pm
Alison Porchnik:

@Eric, my cat is vegan for ethical reasons. He refuses to consume anything derived from another animal. (the flesh on my calves and ankles doesn't count). Me? I don't even keep kosher.
  4:41pm
Alison Porchnik:

Lovely. More of this please!
  4:43pm
Carmichael:

I just happen to know Hank Roberts from his work with Bill Frizzell.
  4:51pm
john:

There was a ancient music of China comp that Give the Drummer Doug found a couple years back that that reminds me of.

Klaus Beyer!!
Honigtorte schmeckt's wunderbar!
  4:55pm
kat330:

Your kat is back! :)
  4:55pm
Alison Porchnik:

Not coming back? Not even the very next day?
  4:56pm
Matt from Springfield:

"But The Cat Came Back"
  4:56pm
Caryn:

Apparently the cat really was a goner...
  4:56pm
kat330:

Hi, Irwin and all you folks!
  4:57pm
Alison Porchnik:

Apparently he didn't. Maybe it was the vegan diet.
  4:57pm
Matt from Springfield:

"But The Kat Came Back"!!!
Hi kat! :)
  4:59pm
kat330:

Hi, Matt! Been listening most of the day. Not feeling keyboardish. But now Philo's home and this song drew us in.
  5:00pm
Matt from Springfield:

Peripheral messages are ideal here.
  5:01pm
kat330:

Anyone on the comments going to try the open mic?
  5:02pm
Philo Gristle:

Hello Irwin and all peripherals, I'll join the ranks here! Sounds like a show whereupon Andy will lose his will to live quickly.
  5:03pm
Matt from Springfield:

A desperate Ken and Andy are funnier to listen to than most open-mic participants.
  5:04pm
kat330:

I heard Ken say Andy will be back to his usual snarky self since there are no celebs to get his tongue all up in (or words to that effect).
  5:04pm
Alison Porchnik:

@kat no way in hell! I'll be torturing my cat with my singing in the privacy of our own home, thank you.
  5:05pm
other david:

Hah - Matt, I was just going to say the same
  5:05pm
kat330:

@Alison: Aw, I'll guarantee your cat greatly appreciates your crooning to him/her!
  5:06pm
Alison Porchnik:

He bites me when I'm practicing.
  5:07pm
Matt from Springfield:

Cats seem to be the most indifferent of all pets.

Hey OD!
  5:08pm
kat330:

Is his name Cowell?
  5:09pm
kat330:

@Matt: I've met aloof cats like this one: http://www.buzzfeed.com/keenan/henri-the-existential-cat
  5:09pm
Matt from Springfield:

Is "Aardvark To Zebra" a new off-off-Broadway musical? I can imagine that, with Andy Bernard singing the male vocal here.
  5:10pm
Alison Porchnik:

@Kat- No. Amos (no relation to the first Hebrew prophet). But I'll try to remember Cowell in 15 years - that's a good name.
  5:11pm
kat330:

BUT no cat I've had as a companion could ever have been called indifferent. Maybe when they reached the last couple of years of long life, but I think that's to be expected.
  5:11pm
Philo Gristle:

I'll vouch for Henri -- not indifferent, just weary.
  5:12pm
kat330:

Hey, Matt -- did you get to see the Discovery buzz-by? We watched it on NASA-tv, and I thought of you and Van.
  5:12pm
other david:

Howdy, also suffering from the keyboardish malaise of late.

On the subject of amateur radio day: finished my morse code lessons today, celebrating with a beer & listening to Irwin.

All I need now is to build a time machine so I can go back to the 1940's where it's actually a useful skill
  5:13pm
Alison Porchnik:

I've always wanted to build a crystal radio.
  5:14pm
Philo Gristle:

My skills in that are limited, not even ...--- ...---
  5:14pm
kat330:

@OD: Don't you have to finish that pizza boat first? [Gee, I hope my memory is right about which listener typed what...]
  5:15pm
Alison Porchnik:

Ha!
  5:15pm
Matt from Springfield:

@kat: Ha ha, great video! It seems Henri views himself as a prisoner, consigned to his fate but still around nonetheless. Like Sartre's "The Wall" as told by a cat.

I didn't see the fly-by, though I was aware of it going on. There are some great photos from the ground I've looked at. Van saw it from The Mall in DC, and sent this link to an amazing official NASA photo of it:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/nasahqphoto/7088014787/sizes/l/in/photostream/
  5:15pm
Caryn:

@kat: the Henri sequel is even better.

Speaking of "The Cat Came Back", it's not a well-known song over here, so I always connect it to the first time I ever heard the song. Namely, this animation: http://www.nfb.ca/film/the-cat-came-back
  5:15pm
autumn:

claire gives me treats
  5:16pm
Matt from Springfield:

And yes kat, it WAS other david who built a boat out of cold pizza and has spent the last several weeks rowing to a dinner off the Bay of Fundy.
  5:16pm
Alison Porchnik:

BTW, Henri looks exactly like Amos, except mine has slightly crossed eyes, so he never looks paralyzed by ennui.
  5:17pm
other david:

kat330 I did indeed, but I got hungry midway and lacking any other means, had to eat the very boat which was transporting me on my merry way.

the coast guard were not impressed.
  5:18pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Philo: Ha, my skills are probably even more limited, but I did get that! :)
  5:19pm
autumn:

I can roll my new ball at the Andy and Ken Show.
  5:19pm
Matt from Springfield:

@OD: Ah, so that's how that turned out. Did a soak in brine at least flavor the pizza, make it more interesting?
  5:19pm
kat330:

@Caryn: How DO you keep on top of all these things??! You certainly deserve the adjective amazing. Do you have a link for the sequel?

@Matt: That's a fine photo.
  5:20pm
Alison Porchnik:

Well, home to the ball of fur and chain...
  5:20pm
kat330:

Regarding Henri (some folks will get that): I esp. liked the white cat writhing on the chair "look at that idiot" and something about cheeseburgers.
  5:21pm
Alison Porchnik:

Cuz he can haz cheezeburgers
  5:21pm
Matt from Springfield:

@kat: Indeed. Thank Van for pointing it out next time you see him!
  5:21pm
kat330:

Give a BIG hug to Amos from me, Alison!
  5:22pm
other david:

@Philo - hah!

Learning to decode morse is a path towards certain madness, you start to hear washing machines and random squeaks in the attic sending letters.

@Matt- It was a little too salty and being a vegetarian I didnt really care for the taste of fish, but it was... interesting
  5:22pm
Alison Porchnik:

I will - I'm sure he sends bites to everyone...
  5:23pm
Philo Gristle:

The photo reminds me, like the videos we saw yesterday, of one of those plastic model kits I had as a kid with the shuttle on top of the 747. Comes full circle.

@Matt &OD: SOS is the only bit I remember. Used to do morse as kids to circumvent nosy adults. Or cyrillic letters if you could pass paper around in class.
  5:25pm
Matt from Springfield:

Passing Cyrillic might get you detained as a spy here!
@OD: That's kind of funny though, always hearing apparently random messages coming from little noises.
  5:26pm
Philo Gristle:

@OD I can absolutely see that, and it's almost reason enough for me to try and re-learn it. Decoding the universe. Love it.
  5:26pm
jason:

hey, yeah!
  5:27pm
moose:

i spent so much time as a kid trying to get friends to do morse code over our little plastic walkie talkies (with the chart printed on the front) but alas nobody shared my interest- i still made those sour sounding beeps for myself
  5:28pm
Philo Gristle:

We'd get trains from Russia in Helsinki and figured Pectopah meant restaurant and went from there. It was kind of legible and fairly easy to pick up yet obscure enough to work.
  5:28pm
Neighborhood Kids:

What hath moose wrought.
  5:29pm
moose:

ha!
  5:30pm
Matt from Springfield:

Spanish Inquisition Irwin!! :D
  5:31pm
Philo Gristle:

@moose we couldn't afford walkie talkies, so it was plastic cups and wire apparatuses... which never worked. But we still managed our neighborhood night-time commando missions. Whistles and knocks.
  5:31pm
other david:

@Matt: it is funny, and even hearing certain rhythms in songs, the letters start pouring into my head - during WW2 the BBC used to play Beethoven's Fifth, "di-di-di-dah, di-di-di-dah" the letter "V", for victory.

@Philo - I used lcwo.net, if you have the time and determination you can learn it, anyone can learn it, you just have to be a little mad in 2012 to want to :)

genuine lol @ neighbourhood kids
  5:36pm
Philo Gristle:

@OD Not sure I have time or determination, but I may be a bit mad. Thanks for the link!
  5:43pm
kat330:

@Philo: Hey, what's another "language" added to your fluent two and passable others!
  5:43pm
Internet:

Proudly killing off all prior means of communication, since 1993. Have a nice day, everyone!!! :-)
  5:44pm
other david:

@Alison - here's an FM crystal radio design: http://solomonsmusic.net/FM_CrystalRadio.html
  5:45pm
kat330:

Irwin, as to the playlist photo, I've decided the bird gets away.
  5:46pm
Critical Thinking:

@Internet: I give people such a headache and waste their time with rational and moral quandries. Thanks for freeing Internets users of me.
  5:46pm
fred:

Are they on Constellation?
  5:47pm
Caryn:

I soooo want to get a cat again... There's actually a cat in a Kentucky shelter that I'd love to have, but that ain't happening.

@kat: actually, checking out your link, that is the sequel. I kind of assumed it would be the first video. But as that is the case, here's the original: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0M7ibPk37_U
  5:48pm
kat330:

This current set is an interesting concoction of tunes.
  5:49pm
fred:

The Rite of Spring is the best thing that happened to music last century apart from The Wedding. And even I don't believe that.
  5:50pm
kat330:

@Caryn: Thanks for Part Un! It's been a dozen years since I've been had by a cat -- Shelley My Love -- but our current landlord isn't amenable. For several years it was okay, because it hurt too much thinking of another pet. I'm ready and willing, but we'll have to find the right place first.
  5:50pm
jan:

Great arrangement of Igor's beautiful music.
  5:52pm
kat330:

Do you have a link to the picture of the KY cat (yeah, what a dumb question to ask!)?
  5:53pm
Das:

This is from my favorite bugs bunny episode.
  5:54pm
kat330:

@Das: I loved Bugs paired with Liszt. :)
  5:54pm
fred:

Where can I get this Fireworks Ensemble record?
  5:54pm
Caryn:

And this is just the easygoing first bit of Rite of Spring...

@kat: hmm, the pic is on an app, so I'll have to see if there's some way to get it to a linkable state...
  5:55pm
Philo Gristle:

Les is More!
  5:55pm
Irwin:

Fireworks CD is in print. Try CDBaby and elsewhere.
  5:56pm
Matt from Springfield:

A short time before yet ANOTHER 20 minute gap 7SD!
I guess Ken will just have to play highlights and Andy albums from years ago, again...
  5:57pm
other david:

Brilliant show Irwin, thank you
  5:58pm
kat330:

What OD said, I.! I'll catch you on the other side.
  5:58pm
T-Zero:

Thanks for the great show, Irwin!
  5:58pm
Philo Gristle:

Excellent show (well, I can vouch for the last 90 minutes I heard). Thanks Irwin and peripherals.
  5:58pm
Caryn:

@fred: you can go to the Ensemble's web site to check out links to buy it (and their other stuff): http://fireworksensemble.org/media-room/audio/
  5:59pm
Matt from Springfield:

Great show! Take care, Irwin.
  5:59pm
Philo Gristle:

Gotta go fix a pizza with kat.
