  7:02pm Doug Schulkind:

Streamers and dreamers:
The wonderful radio collective Asheville FM (home to Jonathan Price's must-hear "Tenor to Tabla" radio show—Wednesdays, 7-10pm) has only a few days left in its crucially important Kickstarter fund campaign. The drive is currently sitting at 65% of its goal (and won't get funded unless it reaches the goal).

In the spirit of WFMU's good neighborly support for creative, community-based broadcasters around the globe, I urge one and all to make a contribution to this honorable enterprise!

Go here:
http://kck.st/wpxbBf

Regular GTDS listener/friend recently moved to Asheville and has already hooked up with the good folks at AFM. If you're out there Annie, I'd love to get your impressions of Asheville FM.
  9:26pm Van in DC:

Doug, only for you would I immediately jump in and back something like this on somebody's say-so.

Heck, what's another grand for good music :)
  9:32pm Van in DC:

I want to start a "Make Van have to actually pay up that $1,000" campaign by challenging EVERYONE here to make any contribution they possibly can to Asheville FM Kickstarter project to get them to their goal!

Come on peoples. MAKE VAN PAY! MAKE VAN PAY!
  9:43pm Doug Schulkind:

Van,
If a jaw drops in the forest does it make a sound? What if people all over the world have linked to a live stream broadcast of it?...

But first, this word from our sponsor: "This jaw-drop has been made possible by Van in DC."

You. So. Totally. Rock.
  9:44pm Van in DC:

Ironically. I am taking Friday off work. Tomorrow. Friday the 13th. Why oh why did I choose THAT day to do my tax returns? I'll probably owe a billion dollars, and because of it being Friday the 13th, I will IMMEDIATELY get notified of being audited after filing electronically. Yep!

But GTDS will make the whole day so much better. :)
  9:49pm Doug Schulkind:

Oooh, please don't mention the T word. For obvious reasons...
  9:54pm Van in DC:

Nothing to fear!! THE THE THE THE THE THE THE! See? Oh hey, is that an astero... *
  10:40pm Greg from Asheville FM:

Van and Doug--just one word: AWESOME! [And thank you.]
  10:44pm Jonathan:

Doug: thank you for posting the link and for the kind words.
Van: thank you for the insanely generous pledge.
There should be a new word invented to describe this kind of outstanding achievement in the field of excellence.
  11:01pm Sean @ Asheville FM:

Van and Doug: WOW! Many many thanks for the fantastical display of community radio love.
  11:23pm Van in DC:

Oh you guys, that's what friends are for right?

I just hope your goal is reached in time.
  7:54am earwax:

Wow, you have to get here early if you want a seat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:09am Doug Schulkind:

Tsokay, Earwax, there are folding chairs in the closet if it gets jammed. You can have the granny rocker in the corner.
  8:43am erella:

Doug, the animated gif is pretty, but it is really annoying. It would be great to get it to go away now that we've seen it.
  8:43am Holly in NC:

Van... you are a a prince among men. That's astonishingly generous. And I know exactly what you mean about trusting Doug ;)
Also, Van, I'm doing my taxes tonight as well, whoohoo! We can commiserate telepathically.

Doug - where did you find today's most wonderful picture?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:50am Doug Schulkind:

Good morning, dear Holly! I forget where up dug this lovely image. Kinda giving me seizures, though.
  8:54am annie:

Hello Doug & high hatters. A Zoopraxiscope would have been fun, following Charlie's Eadweard Muybridge theme.
  9:04am listener james from westwood:

I'm in for Asheville. (Hope the prizes are cumulative; whatever else I'm due, I love stickers!) Also posted to my FB; one of my contacts lives in W. Asheville. Best of luck!
  9:05am Hugo:

I know a professor at the UNC campus in Asheville. Met up again in Antwerp last year. Nice guy. Beautiful campus location, to judge from pictures. So I reckon the radio station oughta be good, too.

Looks like we might have a psychedeeelic show today.
  9:09am annie:

it's an incredibly dedicated group doug. there are two studios. the whole operation fits into a small space behind a very rad coffee shop/cafe. they are definitely in the market for a new building, and to be honest, it would be good if they did. they are professional, tight bunch. every dj has to donate a certain amount to do a show and underwriting and sponsorship are welcomed with glee!! i've been in a funny position; still looking for work so i can only devote a certain amount of time, but once i have some schedule, i can start my stint as office manager. Yay,ljfw, that's great. always stickers and i know there are boxes of tees on the shelves. the radio station is located about two-ish miles maybe three from campus, which is a stunning place!! they plan to build a star-gazer observatory this year. one of the joys of riding the bus is it goes up on campus; a pleasant ride! the radio station is located in west asheville. google battle cat, which used to be izzy's.. but i ramble. they could use the support people, struggling to get on the airwaves for real, too, if they can..as it is they only stream online. anything else?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09am Doug Schulkind:

@Brian in UK
The word "Zoopraxiscope" hurts my eyes. Please make it stop.

kick ass at the interview, annie! asheville sounds utterly civilized. if not at the market, you might have a career in promoting the univ or the city. sounds like you've found a true haven.

A bloomin' grammophone! Just this morning our yellow rose bush is blossoming, about exactly a month early as this usually occurs right on Mother's Day weekend. Hi, Doug and all! Will not be at keyboard, but in earshot.

I'm off to reenact Rikki Tikki Tavi for two 4 year olds. Does one pronounce "Nag" like the Cab Voltaire song or like the festive holiday beverage?

Morning, Van! :-)

I am leaving now - did you know that honey badgers really are immune to cobra venom, while mongoose(es, eese?) are only partially protected by a mutant acetylcholine receptor?

  9:57am listener james from westwood:

northguineahills: i might be confusing that with the heisenberg uncertainty principle. the prof was outraged at a photo finish of a race and yelled, "no fair! you changed the outcome by measuring it!"
  9:58am listener james from westwood:

these days i tend to associate "heisenberg" w/ crystal meth.
  9:59am kat330:

@Doug: Thanks for cranking it up -- perfect for my workout! Backing up to your last voice break: "Broadcasting from Studio P..." heh! When my dad opened up his station [WSLM] back in 1953, he hung a sign "Studio P" on the toilet door. Wonder from whence I get my sense of humor? ;)
  9:59am northguineahills:

@dc pat: I need to try that. I love trying new alcoholic drinks. When I was in Mexico City, I went to some dive pulquerias, serving pulque (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pulque). Awesome stuff, although the real stuff has the consistency of watery syrup. Must be drunk w/ caution, as it partially referments in your GI tract, giving a second buzz.

They have a pulqueria in Chinatown, but it has been gringoized. (Pulque doesn't stay fresh long either).
  10:00am northguineahills:

@James: oh, yeah, I did see that. I believe it was the Heisenberg principle.

Pass the bacon, Matt!

Morning BodegaMan. Hey, have you ever visited the Bodega Pop blog? You'd love it.
  10:06am BodegaMan:

I haven't, I'll try to check it out.

my handle comes from a failed blot attempt. I tried to do a crowd-source type blog where people submitted interviews with their bodega man. Only got a few submissions, unfortunately.
  10:06am Hugo:

Do they have Mou Tai in Chinatown?
  10:11am northguineahills:

@ Hugo: Haven't tried it, need to ask my Chinese friends.

@BodegaMan: Wish I knew, I chat w/ my bodega lads all the time. I've gotten some Yemeni tapes, and just asked for some qat.
  10:15am Van in DC:

Ha, I was stopping in last night to pick a GTDS archive show at random and saw this one already opened, thought WTF? and had to check it out. :)
  10:16am kat330:

Back at the keybored now and still on WSLM's Studio P: Given how tight the quarters were in that little facility, it might have been designating the only activity recommended there as well.
  10:20am Hugo:

I had it several times in China, usually on official, festive occasions. Picked up a bottle on the way out, at Beijing airport. About 100 USD and it came with two small glasses.
  10:20am BodegaMan:

@northguinea, well then. maybe I'll hit you up once my new website is populated with that old content. It didn't work first go round, but i want to keep it out there just in case.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am Doug Schulkind:

What was so thrilling and amazing, Van, is that I had just received an email from Asheville FM's Jonathan Price requesting that I mention AFM's Kickstarter. I was all too happy to do so and typed out the comment last night for today's show. Then you arrived and blew it all outta the water.
  10:25am Van in DC:

What timing haha
  10:27am still b/p:

  10:57am Jonathan:

Hugo: which professor do you know at UNC Asheville?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am Doug Schulkind:

There is a faint echo in the background of this number. I can't tell if it's intentional or just a bad MP3 rip. It's so unobtrusive — what the hell.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am Doug Schulkind:

Naw, it's a putrid MP3. Nevertheless, a wild sound was heard by all. The phase-shifting sizzle is positively Steve Reichian.
  11:03am Hugo:

@jonathan: Mark Gibney, political science.

  11:13am Van in DC:

  11:13am northguineahills:

The funny thing is, I hadn't noticed the looping effect of the Rob Brown Trio, I just assumed that was what the sound was intended to sound.
  11:13am listener james from westwood:

so far we have one sax and one doug.
  11:14am Bob in Charlottesville:

@wfmu recently shared some excellent Cageian non-spoken word at http://youtu.be/JKdeNv3Rlv0
  11:14am Paul:

Sounds fine now, but would be good for you to know how to produce that awesome echo
again when you want to.
  11:14am tirstt:

Anyone else experience a comments page freeze, too? 10:57. Stream crapped out during Totter, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am Doug Schulkind:

That was completely bizarre. Somehow the stream was looping itself. The tech folks at WFMU recently changed the way I connect to the stream remotely. Maybe there's a culprit in there.

@ tirstt
The stream crapped out because I cut if off and reestablished it. At least, that was my intention.

All very weird. And cool.
  11:19am still b/p:

Give the drummer some triskadekaphobia.
  11:19am northguineahills:

@Bob:That's awesome!!!!
  11:25am tirstt:

Not your reset, Doug. The audio stream crapped out during the song before you started speaking with echoes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am Doug Schulkind:

@tirstt
So weird. My best guess is that Steve Reich hijacked the show. If he only just asked nicely, I would've welcomed him on in the conventional method.
  11:30am BodegaMan:

This track reminds me of the C.K. Mann and his Carousel 7 mix I loved from this winter. I really wore out that download.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am Doug Schulkind:

Oh yeah, baby, that C.K. Mann was monstrous. I believe there is a Ghanaian funk comp out there that has both C.K. Mann and Ogyatanaa on it. Good ears, BodegaMan.
