Live Performance and chat with Matt Keating
Back in the 1970's a string of unusuallly introspective, melancholic songwriters had their day in the sun-- people like David Ackles, Harry Nilsson, Randy Newman and Tim Hardin--- and Matt Keating is a modern-day practitioner of that fine tradition. Straddling the line between Americana and pop, Keating has just released "Wrong Way Home," his 10th collection of catchy story-songs. Matt Keating dropped by WFMU to play live.

Hi Irene,
Great to be listening to you on EST instead of GMT

Van in DC:

Yay, Roy! Hi Irene
  12:06pm
Mariano:

NO. F-in. WAY, Irene! I haven't heard this song in years, the mid-90s when I lived in the South of France, and some English friends introduced me to RH. You've totally time-warped my morning! Oh, and good morning!
  12:09pm
mike noble in dc:

  12:13pm

Re-discovered Tommy Flanders- the Moonstone LP this past w/e; reminds me of Hardin and Van's 'Astral Weeks'. And now Ackles! Irene has the best musical taste-hear hear!
  12:14pm

Irene, any chance of Alasdair Roberts ever coming back to play on your show?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm
Irene:

Hey, I'd love to have Alasdair Roberts on again. I think schedules didn't work out when the last album came out. I'll look into it.
  12:30pm
c2677:

I think the grad city website said he has another release soon, so maybe he'll have another trip out to the US.

FYI - Ever since you had him on your show years ago, I've bought every one of his albums - and have really enjoyed his music. ( I even listen to a recording of his studio set from your show - which I think sound better than the album version of some of those particular songs!) So THANK YOU Irene!
  12:31pm
c2677:

oops. drag city
  12:33pm
Deepak:

one more hour and then i'll go to bed, will have to catch up in the morning.
  12:34pm
Van in DC:

That was a perfect set to welcome in Spring :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm
Irene:

Alasdair Roberts seems to have a new album with Mairi Morrison out now and is touring the UK and Spain. Not here yet though. I'll have to get the album asap!
  12:45pm
Brian en Angleterre:

Ah missed David Ackles been out digging in the sunshine. And digging the sunshine.
  12:55pm
zoot:

Nilsson and Newman on the same show! Yowza we are lucky. What's next, something from Nilsson sings Newman?
  12:56pm
kat330:

Catching up here. Hi, Irene and all! Brian, so what's the dirt? What's going down, anyway? And Glenn, what makes you so otterly happy today? :)
  12:57pm
glenn:

the daily otter is my new favourite thing.
  12:59pm
kat330:

Nilsson, Newman, Cohen -- a trifecta of tuneage indeed.
  1:01pm
kat330:

@glenn: They are seriously adorable creatures. The winning photo on a wildlife mag -- we get so many, not sure which one -- was sure to brighten the darkest day (listen up, Leonard!). I'll see if I can locate a link to it.
  1:02pm
trolly mctrollerson:

new to this show - is Irene like super-chill chillaxing super untaxin to the max?
  1:03pm
Van in DC:

Loved that new Cohen song!

  1:15pm
kat330:

@jtm: If you don't sign up for an account, does the listening still count?
  1:17pm
Jay/ London:

what a lovely song :)
  1:19pm
Randy in NC:

The really nice thing about the cardboard CD covers is that if you drop them, they don't break.
  1:21pm
Jay/ London:

i buy L.Ps when i can
  1:33pm
Van in DC:

@kat330: their FAQ has this:

Users must be logged in to score listening time for the station and each user can score a maximum of 90 minutes per day per station.
  1:39pm
kat330:

@van: Ah, well, I'm happy to have that streaming in the background, but I've maxed out on online account signage. I streamed it for a bit during the last show, and the site was ticking numbers/times in such a way I thought maybe it'd work without an account. Thanks for a response!
  1:39pm
Troll Biter:

@ Trolly: by no means an expert re: Irene/her show, but today's show appears fairly representative, which is to say, balmy, breezy and bitchin'. Visit her webpage: http://www.wfmu.org/~irene/
  1:40pm
kat330:

I'm reminded of Ron Sexsmith listening to Matt's vocals at moments. And that's a huge compliment.
  1:41pm
kat330:

Yikes, what a synch! :)
  1:43pm
Confused:

Liking the Matt Keating songs & interview, but until this show I think I had confused him with a NZ-based singer-songwriter ... any help? Possibly David Kilgour but I think even my frazzled brain could keep them separate. Somebody else?
  1:46pm
Chris from DC:

This is some catchy stuff. Definitely hear a touch of Michael Chapman.
  1:49pm
Michael Shelley:

Sounding excellent!
  1:55pm
cuts:

Was Matt Keating in a band of Ithaca College students? I remember a band called Circle Sky and I think he was in that band.
  1:58pm
Brian en Angleterre:

Like it Matt.

Kat, just got the interent radio going so not watching a screen. Digging the ground & the music.
  1:59pm
Brian en Angleterre:

Big Ron?
  2:01pm
kat330:

@Brian: I understood on both counts. Just wondering WHAT digging the ground is in prep for. Myself, I transplanted a dozen tiny seedlings for their next stage indoors.
  2:03pm
Van in DC:

Thanks to Matt for that nice live set!
  2:03pm
Brian en Angleterre:

Ordered a copy of Tiltawhirl earlier today. Looking forward to hearing it.

Potatoes, traditionally supposed to plant them on Good Friday but as it moves every year it does not really work. When they have chitted, time to go into the ground.
  2:06pm
Brian en Angleterre:

Chitting means encouraging them to sprout.
  2:11pm
kat330:

@Brian: I inferred so. :) Heirloom tomatoes are my terre-y toil today. Our garden has never been very successful with root veggies -- green onion do okay -- so we keep it leafy.
  2:14pm
don:

Maybe Spider is listening! Lives upstate-
  2:15pm
Brian en Angleterre:

Has serious problems with toms this last few years due to damp weather. Lost 36 plants the other year. Nothing like picking a tom fresh off the vine. Need a greenhouse, ours is mainly brick. Ho ho.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:15pm
Irene:

cuts, sorry i didn't see your note sooner. Matt did mention he was in Circle Sky.
  2:37pm

this beautiful song is played by someone called Metal??
  2:39pm

Metal Mountains is what they are called I think
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39pm
Irene:

Oops! It's Metal Mountains. Good Catch Julie!
  2:40pm
Van in DC:

Gorgeous that was.
  2:41pm
Julie:

haha they still have Metal in their name. who'd have thought. @Van wasn't it? So much loveliness on Irene's show.
  2:41pm
Mariano:

Wow, Irene: amazing show today! Agree with everyone, Metal Mountains was great!
  2:42pm
Van in DC:

Hi Julie! Yes, always a wonderful place to be on Monday afternoon, right here :)
  2:54pm

Only thing I don't like about Dr. Dog is they only ever play Terminal 5 when they're in town.
  2:55pm
