Listener comments!

  12:05pm
Cecile:

Hi, Diane!
  12:05pm
Cheri Pi:

Headcoats on!
  12:07pm
dc pat:

HEY! Headcoats?? Dang, Daine pullin out the big guns!
  12:13pm
Jim Idol:

hi diane..
  12:18pm
yayson:

Ah, Quintron and pussycat, making the world right one song at a time
  12:19pm
Richard from Venezuela:

Greetings to all.
  12:19pm
Cecile:

Wow, I happened to do a google search on Billy Childish - I always get paranoid that another one my faves has passed on, and I had no idea he'd gotten into it so much with Jack White.

My take on it was that Billy was insufficiently reverent toward the White Stripes.
  12:20pm
Cecile:

Im also glad i don't read Jack White's blog. Wow. A little messianic there?
  12:22pm
pierre:

hello happy fmu listeners !
  12:29pm
White Stripes:

Bow down to the Gods of Units Moved, you little people!
  12:29pm
Cubicle Carl:

What is happy, Pierre?
  12:33pm
Time Zones:

@CC: It's after 5PM in Paris already
  12:33pm
pierre:

@ Cubicle Carl : Happy, an informal name for a cichlid fish from the tribe Haplochromini, particularly in the aquarium hobby.
  12:34pm
Richard from Venezuela:

12:03 in Puerto Ordaz.
  12:36pm
Cubicle Carl:

Then I am a Happy WFMU listener. This Opponents track just rebooted my endocrine system.
  12:37pm
Cecile:

It's a change of pace for Diane, but a pretty great show.
  12:37pm
pierre:

Times Zones is right, after 5.00 anything has happened
  12:38pm
Ike:

Agreed Cecile.

Wow, I didn't know that Venezuela was one of those wild half-hour-off time zones, like Newfoundland in Canada.
  12:39pm
dc pat:

huh. didn't know that about j.white vs Billy but not surprised
  12:41pm
Ike:

My memory is cloudy, but I think lots of Diane's shows were like this back in the mid-90s when I first discovered FMU. Maybe. Or maybe not. I may have enthusiastically eaten too much college cafeteria food for my brain to have captured the memories correctly. She definitely had Zorro and read from Dr. Seuss a lot back then though.
  12:42pm
Cecile:

Ah! Einherjer!
  12:42pm
dc pat:

Whoa, Billy zinged the crap out of that nerd! Nice. Never really liked white stripes either though I think JW has talent.
  12:43pm
Richard from Venezuela:

Ike, this crazy time zone in Venezuela has an only guilty. Chavez. This time zone is one of his great ideas. Talking about that. In USA the clock was delayed one our?. This program last week began at 12:30 pm. Now, begin at 11:30 pm.
  12:44pm
Richard from Venezuela:

sorry, 11:30 am.
  12:47pm
Vince:

I missed you.
  12:51pm
Ike:

@Richard, hmmm I just googled it -- it seems you don't have Daylight Saving Time wackiness in Venezuela. See this:
http://tiny.cc/glwuh
  12:57pm
Time Zones:

When Daylight Saving started In the US, big national companies such as railroads and 9-to-5 office-worker companies wanted Time Zones and Daylight Savings Time, and agricultural people didn't. Arizona for example was all ranchers (hispanic and anglo) when DS was created here nearly 100 years ago, and they still opt out of DS.
  12:57pm
BSI:

That was one small benefit to spending some time in Tucson..... none of that time-shift hooky-pooky.
  12:58pm
BSI:

half a click too slow, I was...
  1:02pm
Richard from Venezuela:

Yes Ike. That is the answer.
  1:05pm
Richard from Venezuela:

Diane, recently i'm listening Unblack metal. Drottnar is my new find. They are awesome. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drottnar
  1:09pm
Richard from Venezuela:

Mouth of the Architect. Very good.
  1:17pm
Danne D:

Hey All :)
Could be worse Richard, in Nepal, right now it is 11:02pm - yep they get into the 1/4 hours there
http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/city.html?n=117
  1:18pm
HΘRNΣT MΘNTANA:

These colors be good Iron Maiden colors.
  1:20pm
Cecile:

Diane, do you have any Immortal or I around?
  1:20pm
Cecile:

Damn, I loved that I album. The best of Immortal and Enslaved. The vids were hilarious, all shot in the show, and Enslaved guitarist Ice Dale wore no shirt. METAL.
  1:24pm
Richard from Venezuela:

The last two enslaved albums are masterpieces.
  1:25pm
Jim Idol:

awesome!!!!
  1:25pm
Cecile:

Dokaka! LOL!

I would venture the last four, Richard. They have a stunning track record.
  1:26pm
Jim Idol:

this is almost as good as "forward to death" by NMN
  1:26pm
Mark from Pompton Plains:

This band sounds kind of like the soundtrack to Katamari Damacy. Any connection?
  1:27pm
pierre:

DOKAKA !
  1:27pm
Cecile:

I would love this as the soundtrack to "Angry Birds: Wakken."
  1:28pm
Handsome Harry:

This is almost as good as Jud Jud. Great cover.
  1:28pm
Gotham FX:

Oh man, that is the BEST EVER.
  1:34pm
Happy Listener:

In the 10 or so years I've listened to this show, I have noticed a correlation between how many times the theme plays and the sheer awesomeness of the show. One theme - typical epic show... Theme goes twice - intensely epic show... Theme plays three times, and if you're listening in a cubicle at some vanilla workplace, put on the headphones or you're gonna called in for a "deeply concerned" talk with management! Diane is MF'n KILLER! Even if my wife was convinced that you were a teenage male headbanger at first listen, LOL!
  1:38pm
Cubicle Carl:

I've been called in for that "deeply concerned' talk more than once, and it has been mostly due to the Kamikaze Fun Machine. I can honestly say that it was all worth it, and just makes me want to pledge more.
  1:38pm
Happy Listener:

Agh, "gonna *get* called in". Fix'd.
  1:40pm
Happy Listener:

I wish I could pledge more, but my budget... my damned budget won't let me.
  1:44pm
Cecile:

Yay!
  1:44pm
Happy Listener:

Luckily corporate matching comes to the rescue year after year, doubling the donation. :)
  1:46pm
Chris from DC:

Good call on the Enslaved, Cecile.
  1:47pm
Happy Listener:

Enslaved is superb,
  1:47pm
PKNY:

QOTSA! This song whoops a major amount ass. Thanks for playing!
  1:49pm
Cecile:

this is the best song of theirs I've heard in a long time.. Even if it sounds like N*****a
  1:51pm
Happy Listener:

A little, but it feels more ballsy or something.
  1:51pm
Cecile:

yeah, like their one good album, songs for the deaf.
  1:52pm
Happy Listener:

*more than N*****a
  1:52pm
Happy Listener:

Quite a shift!
  1:53pm
yayson:

you see, this is why i like this station.
  1:53pm
Cecile:

I actually like about four songs off each Nirvana album. It would make a nice CD and 1/2
  1:53pm
Jim Idol:

I have the Move doing this song..also Ace Frehley does a kick ass version as well
  1:54pm
Happy Listener:

Wow, this is a rerecording of a Move song. I didn't know this.
  1:55pm
Happy Listener:

@yayson: me, too
  1:55pm
Happy Listener:

@Cecile: same here :)
  1:56pm
Cecile:

Yeah, and both versions are great.
  1:57pm
Happy Listener:

It looks like it was only issued as a single until recently.
  1:57pm
Happy Listener:

* the Move version
  1:58pm
Cecile:

That is the correct ELO album.

The Move version also appears on a greatest hits of the time Split Ends.
  2:03pm
Happy Listener:

@Cecile: Thanks for the info, it might be easier to find the reissue of "Message from the Country", $10 on Amazon.
  2:05pm
Cecile:

I remember it well. It was the comp that came out in '73 to finally try to break the band. It was a hot item in '79 because of Cheap Trick covering California Girls and ELO's Do Ya. An actual college boy loaned me a copy, and I felt terribly sophisticated.

message from the country is a great album.
  2:07pm
bill:

That's the way to hit a play button
  2:09pm
Cecile:

I was also wearing an onion on my belt, as was the fashion of the time.
  2:10pm
Happy Listener:

Sorry, Cecile, but the significance of the college boy loaning you the album is lost on me unless I know how old you were in '79. I was 7, listening to 60s girl group rock, Tommy James, and late period Beatles back then.
  2:12pm
Donna:

Hi Diane, ROTORVATOR! Hey...Anyone else in Austin this week going to this on Thurs? http://tinyurl.com/48owhov
  2:14pm
Cecile:

I was 17 going on 18.
  2:14pm
Happy Listener:

@Cecile: I've never been a dedicated follower of fashion, just a standard Cub Scout web belt for '79 for me.
  2:16pm
Happy Listener:

:) @Cecile: That must have been one of those Moments. For me, it was when I was lent Violent Femmes' eponymous album.
  2:18pm
Cecile:

YES. Great cover.
  2:26pm
Happy Listener:

I think it was '84, I had a friend who was in high school and admired my record collection. We started trading, and I discovered Violent Femmes, Depeche Mode, and a bunch of other emerging 80s bands while he discovered a hoard of scratchy 45s from the 60s.
  2:26pm
Cheri Pi:

Cecile, I'm just catching up on the board, I have to find out about the Billy vs Jack spat, I'm not a JW fan so I'm thinking it will be tres amusing. XOXO.
  2:28pm
Cecile:

Watch them Die can fill the Lamb of God shaped hole in my life now that LoG are all boring now.
  2:28pm
mike in sf:

weakling!!!!! oh hell yes!!!
  2:30pm
Richard from Venezuela:

As the palaces burn is a great record. A must have, the new Obscura cd!!
  2:31pm
Happy Listener:

I didn't get into metal until '89, when I was introduced to Slayer's "South of Heaven". Another memorable musical moment was listening to the Grindcrusher comp for the first time in '90. It was a real awakening.
  2:31pm
Richard from Venezuela:

And I also like Cynic. Masvidal and Reinert total masters.
  2:33pm
mike in sf:

john gossard (weakling guitarist) in new band with nathan from graves at sea = dispirit.
  2:34pm
Barney:

hooooray for weakling!
  2:36pm
chris:

too much coffee and Weakling go great together!
  2:36pm
BSI:

not enough coffee and Weakling is working pretty well also...
  2:36pm
Richard from Venezuela:

The new york metal compilations on FMA are killing. http://freemusicarchive.org/member/msdavison3/blog/No_it_Doesnt_NYC_Sucks_Volumes_1__2
  2:37pm
Barney:

thanks mike. getting dispirit demo now.
  2:40pm
Happy Listener:

Thanks, Richard.
  2:41pm
Cheri Pi:

yes-Thanks Richard!
  2:43pm
Richard from Venezuela:

you're welcome.
  2:47pm
Richard from Venezuela:

Julie christmas never played on WFMU?. Made out of babies and her solo work are lovely.
  2:47pm
Cecile:

Made out of Babies played on FMU, I'm pretty sure. On Diane's show, even.
  2:51pm
Cecile:

Lamb of God's Ashes of the Wake, Palaces, and Sacrament were the best 1-2-3 run of albums I'd heard in years.
  2:51pm
Cecile:

Then Wrath got boring, and then Rolling Stone gave it a ridiculous armount of stars.
  2:52pm
Kamikaze:

http://wfmu.org/playlists/shows/17620 Yes. January 5, 2006
  2:53pm
Richard from Venezuela:

yes cecile, i just find a video of Made out of babies playing in Diane's show, http://blog.wfmu.org/freeform/2006/01/made_out_of_bab.html

Thanks Diane. You're awesome.
  2:54pm
Cecile:

I remember that show, it was harrowing! In a good way, but intense.
  2:59pm
Richard from Venezuela:

watching the Made out of Babies video on WFMU. Julie is SO hot. I love her <3
