Celebrating today's projected high temperature of ... what, 65 degrees? Take off your clothes and dance to "The Drummer"'s best!
  8:49am annie:

crap!! third, then, fine
  8:51am annie:

...or not
  8:51am Andy S.:

Whoops, I meant "dance to The Drummer's BEAT."
  8:51am Drummer Some:

We, proud members of the Drummer Some Benevolent Aid & Social Pleasure Club, are all FIRST!
  8:52am annie:

i'm curious to see if they are initiating the mike-shirley names for wf-mu?
  8:58am annie:

so, what's the story about wisconsin, then? i missed something?
  9:03am Drummer Some:

Annie: http://tinyurl.com/4psjuvf
  9:12am Tom:

Go fine peeps of WI! Make ol Frank Zeidler proud!
  9:15am Paul Sherratt:

O magos ... magic !
  9:16am Drummer Some:

Allo Bro. Paul!
  9:19am annie:

sorry mr drummer, that link doesn't work.
  9:20am Brian S:

Afternoon Doug, this is not quite Mikis Theodorakis hero of '67.
  9:20am George:

Hello from Athens Greece! Today I could be your translator!
  9:20am Tom:

Annie: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/02/17/wisconsin-protests-scott-walker-police_n_824697.html
  9:21am Drummer Some:

Γεια σας George!
  9:22am annie:

got it .. thanks.. the last copy and paste didn't copy totally..
  9:23am Tom:

I can't believe that toad Scott Walker (the real SW should sue him) is threatening to call in the National Guard. He should be deported for being un-patriotic.
  9:24am George:

Well, I better leave it to google translator then... Γειά σας Doug!
  9:24am annie:

hhmmm.. that is an unusual state in which to be.. on both counts.. very screwed up politics there
  9:25am Hugo:

Seems like the Wisconsin protesters might have a thing or two to learn from similar events in the Middle East. Nice to see learning applying in the opposite direction for a change. I wonder whether this fiscal prudence also applies to executives in the private sector.
  9:25am Drummer Some:

How bad was that translation, George? (Yes, blame Google!)
  9:26am Tom:

WI has one of the best progressive traditions in the country. But yes, a bit confused in very recent times.
  9:28am annie:

i look at it from the agricultural perspective.. they are all about the dairy industry yet will do their damnedest to permit the sale of raw milk, to the extent of making it illegal. now THAT'S inconceivable
  9:29am annie:

did that make sense? they want to outlaw its sale to the public.
  9:32am BodegaMan:

Yeah, the Madison protests were pretty inspiring - students joining in to support their teachers and loads of unions represented.

as far as raw milk, I think you can still get it if you really want it - like here in NY state - for mass consumption they have to pasturize it, but you can buy raw milk at farmers markets. The French had the same issue with cheese and pasturizing (sp?)
  9:34am George:

The translation was actually correct, only a bit on the "pluralis majestatis" side. I would normally say Γειά σου Doug, not because I don't respect you but simply because your subsequent "Greek" wasn't really Greek :-D
  9:35am texas scott:

it's all greek to me.
  9:35am annie:

well, the state of wisconsin was contemplating the sale of raw milk, making it actually ok to do. they set this "working group" up to discuss the ramifications. turns out out of the 15 people on the group, more than half were from the dairy industry and were already standing against the law. sad sad sad.. now it's illegal to sell to the public even through cow-shares. wisconsin of all states!
  9:36am annie:

but i'm glad to hear of this mass protest..
  9:37am Drummer Some:

You were very gentle with me, George. Tune in later to hear me butcher Arabic.
  9:40am glenn:

i grew up on a farm, and drank raw milk until i was twelve or so. it didn't kill me, and to this day i have no allergies or food sensitivities of any sort. well, except for liver. bllllllllleeeeecccchhhh.
  9:40am Brian S:

You should hear what the Americans did to Ingerlish!!
  9:41am glenn:

so as far as i'm concerned, if you want to buy raw milk, fill yer boots.
  9:41am Drummer Some:

Guess you didn't eat enough raw liver, then, Glenn.
  9:41am Jon:

we ain't done nothing to english.
  9:41am Brian S:

@ glenn so you're not brucellosis accredited
  9:44am glenn:

(googling brucellosis).................................................................................................................................................... nope. i'm good.
  9:44am tr;sh:

Hey Glenn, I didn't grow up on a farm, didn't drink raw milk and to this day i have no allergies or food sensitivities of any sort.
  9:45am Hugo:

Juxtapose these two quotes:

Rather than shouting down those in office who speak honestly about the challenges we face, the president and his advisors should lead. Until they do, they are not focusing on jobs, and they are not listening to the American people who put them in power.”

Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-Ohio)

If the right to collective bargaining is taken away, the UW System will see more and more of its highly qualified employees leave to teach or work at other universities that can offer them more desirable compensation packages. Our faculty and staff are already underpaid when compared to other university systems, and this bill will lessen the incentive to come to our state even further.

the UW –Madison Teaching Assistants Association “Teach Out”

Both can't be true, can they?
  9:45am Drummer Some:

Can anyone tell what song Asha Bhosle is covering here?!
  9:46am glenn:

something by yoko ono?
  9:46am Drummer Some:

Miriam Makeba: Pata Pata!
  9:48am annie:

wow.
  9:50am annie:

mr drummer, will you be doing a remote bit for the marathon? and this year, if all goes well, i will be able to return the kindness from the last marathon..
  9:51am dc pat:

to me thie whole Wisc thing is really encouraging--lately seems like the only people that protest anything in the US are people who have no clue what they're talking about.,,,the same people that use to tell me to get a job when I was out there protestin the various wars we start...
  9:53am glenn:

i'm 50. i NEVER met anybody who had any kind of food allergies until i was about 35. none of my siblings or any of the other farm kids ever got any food allergies either, so......
  9:54am Drummer Some:

On the Tuesday edition of GtDS, I will do the first show live from Pittsburgh and the second live from the station in Jersey City. Both Friday shows will be live from home base here in my house! And yes, I always were pants whilst doing the show.
  9:55am annie:

did you mean to say you were panting?
  9:55am glenn:

although i did have a girlfriend who contracted leptospirosis, and i gotta tell you, that's an evil motherfucker.
  9:56am Brian S:

@ glenn flashback to Dusty's show last Monday. Viv Stanshall wrote the lyrics to Steve Winwood's Dream Gerund on Arc of a Diver. It has the line 'My mind is sky when I wake up'. Love it.
  10:04am glenn:

i friend of mine had viv has an instructor in art college, i guess in london, sounds like viv was a pretty interesting guy. (use of understatement implied)
  10:08am Brian S:

There is a biog of him called Ginger Geezer, OK but not great. Would recommend one of his solos 'Teddy Boys Don't Knit' painfully honest at times.
  10:09am Brian S:

Why can't records sound like this nowadays?
  10:12am Andy S.:

Re: Tabby Thomas. He ran a club in Baton Rouge called Tabby's Blues Box. I was there once in the early '90s for a showcase gig by his son, singer & guitarist Chris Thomas (a/k/a Chris Thomas King).
  10:15am Drummer Some:

Andy S,
Did you ever have a Poor Boy at Phil's over on Government Street in Bator Rouge? That is food to see God by.
  10:15am glenn:

hey drummer, you ever heard of hank davis?
  10:17am Drummer Some:

You mean Hank "Stompin at the Dead Moose" Davis
  10:18am glenn:

toured with elvis in the early days, made some great country /rockabilly records, became an english professor at the university of guelph up here in ontario.
  10:18am Andy S.:

Re: Warren Storm. Saw him live in '78 at Gilley's (the country super-club later made famous in the movie URBAN COWBOY) during a record company junket to Houston TX. He'd been playing professionally since the mid-Fifties if not earlier. When we met the next day for an interview, Warren told me he'd never been interviewed or ridden in a limousine before that weekend! He was fairly astounded that I knew about his playing on records with Lightnin' Slim and other Jay Miller artists....Storm has since played everywhere from New Orleans Jazz Fest to Lincoln Center as drummer and vocalist with swamp-pop revivalists Li'l Band o' Gold.
  10:19am glenn:

stompin at the dead moose, exactly. one of my favorite records.
  10:20am Carmichael:

Hiya Doug and all you udders.
  10:21am Drummer Some:

How-dee, Carm! Grab a teet and start squeezing.
  10:24am Carmichael:

Sure thing! Put on some milkin' music, if you please.
  10:25am jill:

LOVING the NOLA set, Mr. drummer. Yeah you rite.
  10:27am david:

I'm ready to hear some Egyptian Lover!!!!
  10:28am Guy:

Doug, on what album is this Ibrahim tune?
  10:30am Brian S:

Do you know what album he plays Shrimp Boats on?
  10:31am Drummer Some:

Not surprised you like that load of NOLA, Jill.
  10:34am david:

love that little laugh at the end of that John Doughty song.
  10:38am Hugo:

I had a feeling that Maddy Prior might turn up in this set ...
  10:38am Drummer Some:

Long-time listeners of GtDS know of my famous crush on Maddy Prior. If you don't know about it, it's really, really famous. Big time. Huge. Gallactic.
  10:38am Brian S:

This sounds a bit like John Riley
  10:42am Andy S.:

Re: 'John Doughty.' That's a pseudonym for Tabby Thomas. When the Louisiana blues man's band got drunk and failed to show for a scheduled studio session in Crowley, producer Jay Miller recorded Tabby "a cappella" on a selection of traditional English folk ballads. This material went unreleased for years because Miller thought it wouldn't be accepted by Tabby's core audience.
  10:42am Guy:

found "Shrimp Boats" on <http://www.discogs.com/>, it's on a few releases.
  10:42am Drummer Some:

I have a crush on the Watersons, too. Each and every one of them. (Not as much as Maddy, but still...)
  10:43am Carmichael:

Good ol' Maddy Prior. Recognize her voice anywhere. Now how about the other Silly Sister, June Tabor?
  10:44am Brian S:

This reminds me, I havn't checked for eggs today. Thanks, Doug.

Thanks Guy too.
  10:45am Drummer Some:

Never had a big lump in the throat for June Tabor. Now with Maddy, well

Can....not....breathe....
  10:46am Brian S:

Open a window, man
  10:46am Brian S:

Open a window, man
  10:46am Carmichael:

It's always been the opposite with me, Doug. The stuff Tabor did with the Oyster Band, I almost lose control of bodily functions. To each his own ...
  10:47am Brian S:

This Michaels not after my chooks' eggs!!
  10:48am Paul Sherratt:

I must admit to having a bit of a barrier with most Tabor songs. Did she put it there or did I ?

Norma Waterson has been very poorly of late - not sure of the latest news on her. Usually get to see a family performance every eighteen months or so. They're always moving affairs.
  10:49am Brian S:

I think you are not alone there, Paul.
  10:52am glenn:

i swoon for anne briggs.
  10:53am Hugo:

Ah, the Hardanger fiddle ...
  10:53am glenn:

and sally timms, too.
  10:53am Carmichael:

Stor Stor a Ghra = "Dear, Dear, my Love."
  10:57am glenn:

google of acid ray records produces nothing, well, there's this - Ray Barretto: Acid
31 Oct 2003 ... More Must Hear Review. Ray Barretto: Acid ... hard-driving conga rhythms could be heard all over the records of Dizzy Gillespie, Cal Tjader, ...
  11:01am Drummer Some:

Read more about this amazing song here:

http://blog.wfmu.org/freeform/2008/07/arabs-mock-imbe.html
  11:03am Drummer Some:

By the way, this Cheikh Imam record is included in this week's Mining the Audio Motherlode.
Glenn, I've got Anne Briggs right here. She almost made the cut. (Now I feel bad.)
  11:07am Brian S:

Doug, that is so cheap. Shame on you. You can save that for your all female program(me) one Tuesday.
  11:09am Hugo:

Some Umm Kalthoum, surely?
  11:12am Drummer Some:

Hugo, I thought it would make a bigger statement by NOT including Oum (or Umm or Um —the woman of a thousand spellings) in this set. While Asmahan was never as beloved as Umm, she was accepted as a formidable heartthrob in her own right.
  11:15am Carmichael:

Doug, your pledge premium should be "Underdog Heartthrobs: Formidable in Their Own Right".
  11:16am Drummer Some:

OK, OK, I ran and got some Oum. Now are you happy? (What was I thinking?)
  11:19am Drummer Some:

One more killer Egyptian number after this, then comes maybe my FAVORITE set of the year so far. Don't touch that mouse!
  11:29am monica:

hi doug. have been strapped in for the duration and feel as though i've been around the world in three hours. once again, another stellar show!
  11:29am mouse:

toucha toucha touch me, i wanna be dirrrrty.
  11:31am Listener Bill:

Ungodly connection to Satanic unions is what he meant to say.
  11:33am technically.....:

satan is a god, just not a very nice one. personally, as an atheist, i don't believe in the horned one either.
  11:34am Toby:

Whatta 'bout Hamza el-Din?!!?!?
  11:35am hosni:

i think i'll go to see the lemmy documentary today. that should take my mind off of stuff.
  11:36am Leigh:

Hi Doug, stoked for what awaits!!
  11:37am Drummer Some:

Thanks Monica. This next set is one I think you, especially, will appreciate. You, too, Leigh!
  11:38am hosni:

apparently, lemmy's facial warts have their own facebook page. not that i condone the use of facebook.
  11:39am Drummer Some:

Toby, you have shamed me and my entire family. Next week, three hours of Hamza el-Din.
  11:49am Hugo:

Thanks for the Umm .... mmmm ...
  11:55am Hugo:

Facebook, what's that?
  11:55am glenn:

thanks doug, awesome as per the usual. i'm on my way to montreal for the weekend. au revoir, all of y'all.
  11:57am Drummer Some:

Glenn is the Patisserie Belge still open in Montreal? Have a num-num for me.
  12:02pm glenn:

yep. on parc, in the plateau. birdy num nums
  12:04pm Carmichael:

I'm off to Florida next week. Thanks Doug, see you everyone else.
  12:09pm Andy S.:

Re: Saunders King. The Bay Area blues man is Carlos Santana's former father-in-law. Carlos divorced Saunders' daughter Deborah in 2007 after 34 YEARS of marriage; he married drummer Cindy Blackman on 12.19.2010 in Hawaii.
  12:12pm Drummer Some:

Carlos Santana married Cindy Blackman? What a power couple!
  10:14pm βrian:

Good to see, at least, a glimmer of consciousness about what's going on in Wisconsin. It's GW all over again, but at local level.
