Bloody freezing! We're in the midst of a Mini Ice Age in Britain!!
  3:26am
coalhard:

while we are freezing the poles are warming up--GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE--is real--proabably man made but could be sun
  3:26am
Julie Marie:

  3:50am
coalhard:

  3:52am
Matt from Springfield:

Hi Julie! Been back from Thailand a couple weeks now and listening live, courtesy of insomnia--so why not spend it with my 'FMU pals! Love the Payolas!
  3:53am
Julie Marie:

Me too Love them!! Welcome home, Matt!
  3:54am
Matt from Springfield:

@coalhard: I was about to ask you what time zone you're in, whether you live on the other side of the world, or just a big time Night Owl. I guess it's the latter (WV is a wonderful state--greetings from "East" Virginia!)
  3:57am
Matt from Springfield:

@Julie: I'll have to go back and listen to the INSPIRATION for your show's title, Loreena McK. And is it "Julie Marie" now? Is that a consequence of hosting Toothpick Rhythm for a week??? Or just a bit of your Lone Star past sneakin' out? :)
  3:58am
Julie Marie:

Actually it is my French mood :) But it's my real name.
  4:01am
Matt from Springfield:

Bilingual programming in accordance with the Blame Canada show!
  4:23am
Matt from Springfield:

Extensive Wiki article on "Dark Night of the Soul", to include a concept alt-rock album written by Danger Mouse this year. St John of the Cross first wrote Dark Night of the Soul sometime in the 1500s while imprisoned.
  4:24am
Matt from Springfield:

"His poem narrates the journey of the soul from its bodily home to its union with God. The journey occurs during the night, which represents the hardships and difficulties the soul meets in detachment from the world and reaching the light of the union with the Creator."

Loreena probably used that as a narrative to describe finding a lover. I had read the original poem before at university.
  4:24am
Matt from Springfield:

A Case Of You!! Bless you Julie!
  4:26am
Julie Marie:

Are you singing too, Matt?
  4:26am
blujacket:

ooooh canada.
  4:26am
Matt from Springfield:

Yes--all except the really high notes at the end!
  4:27am
Julie Marie:

Aw c'mon push yourself! She can't hit them anymore either :(
  4:27am
Harry:

Hi Julie Great playlist. I think French is the # 1 accent ,at least in the top ten, Irish is close.
  4:28am
Matt from Springfield:

OOOoooooohh Darling!
  4:30am
Julie Marie:

And French-Canadian has a very different sound to it.
  4:31am
jamief:

great show Julie....freezing like no ones business here in UK...never thought of Men Without Hats as Canadian...u live and learn...waiting for the token appearance from old Neil...keep it up!
  4:34am
Julie Marie:

Sorry, Jamie, no Neil. Seemed almost too predictable. I will have to play him another time, not as familiar as I should be.
  4:35am
Harry:

Can you play songs that illustrate the difference between a French accent and a French Canadian accent?
  4:38am
Julie Marie:

Haha Harry, sorry no.
  4:38am
jamief:

or better still....Belgian French..:)))....Plastic Bertrand perhaps...he was probably from South London!
  4:40am
Harry:

Plastic Bertrand wow
  4:43am
blujacket:

i just returned home to WFMU streaming in my vancouver apt hearing "a case of you" and thinking this is going to be a good radio evening. just put it together that there is a canadiana conceit going on here. slow "against the glass", if you know what i'm talkin about than you know what i'm talkin about.
  4:46am
Matt from Springfield:

Metric is actually from Toronto, but has been based in Montreal for a time.
  4:49am
blujacket:

metric is definitely toronto.
  4:51am
Julie Marie:

Thanks!
  4:55am
blujacket:

godspeed you! black emperor on the other hand is montreal ; )
  4:56am
Julie Marie:

Hmm Black Emperor, will have to check them out.
  4:58am
blujacket:

whoa i had no idea steppenwolf was canadian content. sorry i'm hogging comments space, been drinking beer all night.
  4:59am
Julie Marie:

No worries! I like talky (commenty?) folks. Yes, I only just learned that Steppenwolf were Canadian, although it seems they formed the band in LA.
  4:59am
jamief:

ahhh godspeed you! black emperor...let me put on some shoes so I can can spend the morning gazing :)
  5:03am
Harry:

GY!BE used to be GYBE!
  5:04am
blujacket:

this is true.
  5:04am
Julie Marie:

Nice long songs let you fetch goodies from the library :)
  5:05am
Matt from Springfield:

"Commenty" music geek typings here: the Canadian band "The Mynah Birds" played a few performances in 1964 before their singer was arrested for being AWOL from the US Navy.

The keyboard player and drummer went on to the original lineup of Steppenwolf. The bassist and lead guitarist--Neil Young--went on to form Buffalo Springfield. The lead singer was--you guessed it--Rick James.
  5:07am
Julie Marie:

Wait, who did Rick James sing with?
  5:07am
blujacket:

i was aware of the 0 degrees of separation between neil and rick - too funny.
  5:09am
blujacket:

god bless montreal.
  5:10am
Julie Marie:

We have some more French territory coming up.
  5:12am
Matt from Springfield:

Rick was the singer. Neil Young and Bruce Palmer were the lead guitar and bass. Goldy McJohn of Steppenwolf was on organ. The Wiki article says several tracks were actually recorded by Motown for a planned release--but only two have ever come out on a comp! I wanna hear those now!
  5:12am
Julie Marie:

Always thought the best part of Steppenwolf was the singer.
  5:15am
Matt from Springfield:

Yes, I love that John Kay is blind and still gives such a great stage presence.
  5:17am
Harry:

Isn't Mars Bonfire a cool name?
  5:19am
blujacket:

wondering where the lions are.
  5:20am
Julie Marie:

Sorry, I don't know the lions.
  5:21am
Julie Marie:

Lions of Judah? Or is that someone else?
  5:22am
Matt from Springfield:

Ha ha! You were bluffing, you did bring out the obligatory Neil! Great choice of song (as you played Saint Etienne's version before).
  5:22am
Julie Marie:

Actually no, I went into the library and grabbed it during a longer song. Felt the need!
  5:25am
blujacket:

bruce cockburn's "wondering where the lion's are". song gets me every time.
  5:25am
Julie Marie:

Sorry no Lions within reach :(
  5:26am
Julie Marie:

Gosh, revealing my ignorance again!
  5:27am
Matt from Springfield:

Thanks for playing An April March--always find good bands from you. I'm going to be stuck gazing at my shoes today...
  5:33am
Julie Marie:

Yeah somehow all the darkwave got stuck in the last set, I usually try to go poppier, but then most of it is French (An April March is Canadian though!)
  5:39am
blujacket:

julie my mutterings arent even necessarily requests, you've just got me thinking about canadian music. like how ironically the band released some of the most quintessential american sounding music ever. i'm unaware of half the tracks listed on this playlist so thanks. levine though, i am acquainted with.
  5:39am
Matt from Springfield:

Cowboy Junkies first album...paradise. I hear surface noise too, well done!
