Listener comments!

  3:02pm
Bill:

From the look on Dad's face, I don't think a gun was a good idea.
  3:03pm
Dad:

Know what we call this gun. sweetie? The widower maker.
  3:09pm
Matt from Springfield:

The Dad's got something in mind to go after immediately, he's not even waiting to remove the tags!

If it's disco, tell him to spare Lord Rhaburn, this stuff's actually quite good!
  3:11pm
Clark Barr:

Off to a great start, Irwin!
  3:21pm
MySpace:

I am the great abandoned stripmall of the WWW. Forgive me.
  3:21pm
Peanut Gallery:

About that picture, Dad and the family look perfectly normal. But it the way the weapon brings color to the gray Christmas world is strange...Great tunes IC!
  3:24pm
Matt from Springfield:

Nice B&S!
The other prob with MySpace wallpaper is the busy repeated patterns, combined with "Friends" comments strewn all over the page, it can be difficult sometimes to find the author's own content on a page.
  3:29pm
Carmichael:

Bet Amanda wishes she could rock like Chrissy.
  3:30pm
v k:

listening to radio all my life, i thought Pretenders only had 3 songs - now i know they have at least 4 - thanks Irwin!
  3:30pm
postmanpaul:

MySpace graphics, simply put, are juvenile and cluttered Irwin.
Oz Magazine graphics were got-up like dogs dinners too...
But that was different!
  3:31pm
Savory c:

oh darling, i emptied your viagra bottle into little timmy's froot loop bowl.
  3:32pm
G:

Bet Chrissy wishes she could rock like Amanda
  3:33pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

the magic flute of one Herbie Mann...love this guy.
  3:33pm
glenn:

hey, i just realiized the guitar riff from up the neck is the same as public image by p.i.l. huh. how 'bout that?
  3:35pm
Matt from Springfield:

Amanda and Friends could include duets with those who probably influenced her (and those who now wish they could perform like Amanda!)

Chrissy Hynde, Patti Smith, Janis Joplin (Natalie Cole style), Joan Jett, what other vocalists would be good for this?
  3:35pm
Peanut Gallery:

From the liner notes of the reissued album with "Up the Neck": But what were songs such as "Kid" and "Brass in Pocket" actually about MOJO magazine asked The Pretenders' leader in 2006. "Oh, the usual stuff," said Hynde. "A bit of prostitution, a little scamming, a hustle here and a hustle there..."
  3:36pm
Carmichael:

@Matt: definitely Louis Armstrong and Bob Goldthwaite.
  3:38pm
Matt from Springfield:

@v k: I'm guessing the 3 songs you're thinking of are "I went back to Ohio and my city was gone", "Back on the chain gang" and "Middle of the road". Have you not heard their take on "Have yourself a Merry little Christmas" in December?
  3:40pm
Carmichael:

Isn't Christmas about scamming and a little hustle here and there? I have kids, so it's mostly here.
  3:41pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

I used to be in a band that tried to cover a Pretender's song--not one of those mentioned above--and it was harder than it would seem. They were a tricky little band, they were.
  3:42pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Carmichael: In the more oldies vein, she could sing with Dolly Parton (what a contrast! marvelous!), Dean Martin, Bobby Darin, and Connie Francis. In a modern vein she could sing with Adele, Debbie Harry, John Mayer (but I still might not listen to that one), who else?
  3:43pm
Peanut Gallery:

Irwin, is this Moondog chaconne "Viking I" or "Heimdall Fanfare"? Thanks!
  3:45pm
Carmichael:

@Matt: Hmmm, Kid Rock, the Beastie Boyz, the Cranberries (for the Irish yodel), the Ramones, Commander Cody, The Manhattan Transfer, and I'm envisioning a lovely duet with Wild Man Fischer.
  3:46pm
v k:

@Matt - i boycott xmas tunes not sung by Alvin and the Chipmunks
  3:47pm
Mike East:

Uh...Lady Gaga?
  3:49pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Carmichael: Lovely choices, especially the Cranberries! Lady Gaga we already covered a few weeks ago, Mike.
@v k: But remember, the Chipmunks are just a record speed (or Audacity setting) away!
  3:50pm
glenn:

cartman covering pokerface!!! sublemon. just like everything south park does.
  3:52pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

me no want dance
  3:54pm
aaron in chicago:

nice 3pm pick me up
  3:54pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

me can't help but dance
  3:55pm
Mike East:

yeah, it seemed pretty obvious
  3:56pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

heat my feet
  3:59pm
frenchee:

I'm dancing at my desk
  4:00pm
Bill:

Did you hear that the Lady Gaga Halloween costumes have bedbugs?
  4:01pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

no, it's syphillis
  4:01pm
Really?:

i thought they came with crabs.
  4:01pm
Matt from Springfield:

@DCE: Any other songs you remember your band playing? I know, some songs are a lot more complex then they sound. Beatles and other songs have just weird chords sometimes, like Gm13 or stuff you wouldn't know offhand.
  4:02pm
Cheri Pi:

Lady Gaga's bedbugs are dressing up for Halloween, it's so pretentious!
  4:03pm
atrrs:

Yikes. People are reporting incidents of bedbugs and lady gaga halloween costumes on this map. It looks like an epidemic. Pandemic. Epic.
http://www.artmaps.info
  4:04pm
drewo:

Mighty mighty Fall. Thanks.
  4:05pm
frenchee:

what drew said
  4:05pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

@Matt--the songs I picked were cool, the songs the rest of that band picked...I regret
  4:12pm
Carmichael:

Wow, Michele sounds like Jane Siberry.
  4:17pm
We Can Spot The Difference:

THEY LIVE. WE SLEEP.
  4:21pm
RD:

HI Irwin. I'm listening. What filler!
Reno D
  4:21pm
Matt from Springfield:

Wow, first time I heard of the song or person Reno Dakota (looked up on wiki, couple mentions of his film "American Fabulous"). Thank you Irwin.
  4:24pm
Matt from Springfield:

(sniff) Did "Better Things" remind anyone else of Neil Young's "Birds"?
  4:26pm
RD:

Hey Matt, they were giving away American Fabulous dvds on the last WFMU pledge drive. Probably next time too.
  4:27pm
Matt from Springfield:

@RD: Hey, glad to meet you! I can't find much online presence on you though. Do you have an Official website?
  4:28pm
RD:

But of course! americanfabulous.com as well as American Fabulous Worldwide Fanclub on facebook.
  4:29pm
Matt from Springfield:

Thanks Reno! I'll pay attention for any pledge premiums that have your works next March, Reno! How about Damnation? I just read the summary of that!
  4:32pm
PMD:

@atrrs - I like that Chad had an incident. o
  4:33pm
oops:

oops
  4:33pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

when you pack a banana in your lunch, everything tastes like banana.
  4:33pm
Laura L:

Rick Meyerowitz says hello. We're not listening to your show right now, we're working!
  4:33pm
RD:

Damnation! No finer screenplay has ever been written. At least by me, anyway. Hopefully you're a deep pockets production backer searching for an exciting and raunchy new production.
  4:35pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

aw sweet my favorite prog rockers!
  4:35pm
PMD:

@DCE - there are some people who won't believe you. 'how can that be?' they say in astonishment. yet the evil molecules infest everything around, just like bedbugs in lady gaga's costume.
  4:36pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

I wonder what happens when you pack a banana in your pants
  4:37pm
Carmichael:

Keith Emerson rules all the keys, black or white.
  4:37pm
PMD:

banana-smelling farts (I decided on a PG answer)
  4:37pm
Dude with Lighter Aloft:

Karn Evil 9!!!!!!
  4:38pm
Carmichael:

Everything tastes like pants.
  4:39pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

oh, here it comes! the big synth solo!! whooo!
  4:39pm
still b/p:

If the beat bobbed a bit more loosely, would a good portion of this sound like a Dead jam?
  4:40pm
Matt from Springfield:

@RD: Not a deep-pocketed backer, but I'm nuts enough to enjoy a raunchy new production! I'll take a look at AF--seems like a beautiful production.
  4:41pm
Detroit Mac:

I remember walking to the Korvettes in Downtown Brooklyn to get this album... And walking home to find it was scratched. Walked back and got another copy and back home. It was scratched, too. Went back a 3rd time and went through 15 copies to find one without the defect. Sort of hard to listen to it without thinking...
  4:42pm
Matt from Springfield:

@DCE: I could try it with a cucumber in my pants, protected by a layer of aluminum foil.
Some of ELPs tracks are rather long and pretentious, but "Tank" is a good example of their skilled, rocking tracks!
  4:42pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

...and that's why vinyl is making a comeback
  4:43pm
glenn:

saw e.l.p. (technically, fell asleep to) in 1975. exhibition stadium, toronto. you should play tank by the stranglers. way better song.
  4:43pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

screw that cucumber, go butternut SQARSH!!
  4:45pm
Cheri Pi:

I think Amanda should do a postmortem duet with Chef from Southpark, like Natalie Cole did with her dad.
  4:46pm
Matt from Springfield:

Yes! "Love Gravy Cookies"!
  4:48pm
Cheri Pi:

I was thinking "salty chocolate balls"
  4:49pm
jan:

Can you play the NICE, since you were playing ELP, you could play the predecessor -just E? that would be interesting to revisit.
  4:50pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Cheri: I did too, at first. But another great one could be "Kathie Lee - Mimi Cookie", it would be kind of like our Amanda/Mark Turns dream mash-up!
  4:52pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

hey Bo Diddley
  4:52pm
Bad Ronald:

Yeah Jan - "Diamond Hard Blue apples of the Moon"!
  4:52pm
Carmichael:

"I'm Your Boogieman, that's what I am ..."
  4:52pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

I'm your what now?
  4:53pm
still b/p:

Apparently Ho' Diddley?
  4:53pm
Cheri Pi:

Matt-I like the mash-up idea, it's very classy too.Someone get Amanda's agent on the line-STAT!
  4:53pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

I think Irwin is Amanda's agent now
  4:55pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

Chusid Talent Scouting "Choosy talent chooses Chusid!"
  4:59pm

This is an Irwin-approved comment board, apparently.
  4:59pm

  5:03pm
Jandek Fans:

He's so damn happy to have all those Cds and mailers out of his office.
  5:06pm
Peanut Gallery:

Re these kinds of cats: http://drop.io/tpm5lz3
  5:06pm
Carmichael:

Corwood Industries??
  5:18pm
Matt from Springfield:

Sorry, got called away. Yes, I'm pretty sure Irwin is her record company exec, Jody would remain her music producer and personal manager.

Chusid Artists, Inc.
  5:19pm
Matt from Springfield:

Nice motto DCE.
@Cheri: Actually any mash-up with Amanda would be excellent. Something else besides Third Stone from Cookieland.
  5:22pm
Carmichael:

Oh, Mojo Nixon is another singer with whom she could duet.
  5:25pm
G:

An Amanda-free setlist so far, and an Amanda-permeated comments board. Do I sense the suspense level rising?
  5:26pm
Matt from Springfield:

The AMANDATE must stand!
At least one Amanda every show, at least until ALL her material has been played!

  5:41pm
glenn:

this IS and always will be my favourite beatles song
  5:41pm
Matt from Springfield:

Hey, this Guadalcanal Diary is older than I thought--they're from the early 80s Athens scene, I thought this might be newer. Well, always something new to check out, at WFMU!
  5:42pm
Matt from Springfield:

Yes David, they were probably like 9 at that time.
  5:47pm
Carmichael:

I just had a Penelope Houston brain-rush from this song. Qualities of Mercy.
  5:49pm
Matt from Springfield:

Kind of reminds me of Lucinda Williams, maybe Nancy Griffith.
  5:50pm
Listener John:

Hey, this Birdie Busch song "Bordertown" sounds really good. Thanks, Irwin!

  5:58pm
noah:

wow never heard this demo by harry nilsson, he is so good in the raw. he is a force of nature that compells me to like pop music, if only momentarily. it is a moment of bliss
  5:59pm
Matt from Springfield:

But my preferred version of Nilsson's Without You, nonetheless. Much more gritty and emotional this way.

I agree, Carmichael. Great show, Irwin!
  3:17pm
JohnB:

Excellent show, Irwin. There is a fantastic song via the Numero Group series - Elijah and Ebonites "Pure Soul". I'd love it if you can spin that on your show sometime. There is a great streaming/mp3 download Numero Group DJ set on their blog, too. http://numerogroup.wordpress.com/page/5/
