he was a dj at a radio station where he went to school. i knew the station, too, and i think that's how the madness began. he obsessed over that and it got out of hand. then he came in each week to the comments and started to harass trouble with very annoying comments.. so that was the beginning of the visits from george eliot. i used that name to continue to comment, yet avoid more GWW.; hoping to curb his enthusiasm... poor guy..

Cecile, the solution is to get an external hard drive which you can attach to your computer and transfer as much stuff as you can from the internal to the external hard drive - I'm now on to my fifth.

You can save a little cash by buying one with a separate power source; those that are to be plugged directly into the computer and run on computer power tend to be more expensive. Generally, the smaller the drives, the more expensive they are. My latest is a 1 TB drive which was close to $200 at the current exchange rate. But I suspect you can get them cheaper in the US.

Doug, that's a wonderful story.
My husband's dad doesn't talk much about his service, either. He was at the Battle of Coral Sea, a pretty terrifiying event. My brother-in-law found out he had earned a medal for valor as did the whole crew of his ship, not a Silver Star or anything,but he had it sent, and it sits proudly in the foyer of his dad's house.

My Dad is 85 and served in the 101st Airborne. He never said a word about it until I found his uniform. He still doesn't mention it, except for how much fun parachute school was.

My Dad was a Second Lieut. on a naval Destroyer in the Pacific and he never talked much about the war either except to say it wasn't an experience he'd like to repeat. But, he had enlisted. If he were alive he'd be 92. I do have his uniform though and some memorabilia. Enjoyed reading about your Dad, Doug.

Doug, I will share with you a snippet of information my music-fanatic anthropologist friend shared with me: the correct adjective for describing something of/from/to do with Madagascar is malagasy. It's also the name of the language. Useful knowledge in a pub quiz! Or not.

There seems to be a commonality - those who took part in the war are very reluctant to talk about it afterwards - those on the winning side and certainly those on the losing side. It can take decades - if ever ...

The men (and women) who served in WWII had something to show for their efforts: defeating fascism, which has to, somewhere in the deep recesses register as it having been "worth it." But what about the poor souls who saw the horrors in Laos or Basra or Kabul. What the hell can they rationalize their suffering with? (Sorry to get so serious here. These thoughts have been percolating in my head this week.)

I just re-read Slaughterhouse Five last week. It hits home on a lot of points. A good anti-war book, and Apocolypse Now is a good anti-war movie.

Well, in WW2, we knew at least in retrospect what happened so it's possible to make an assessment of "worth". In current war theatres, too much is shrouded in security and secrecy to get an idea about what's actually happening and hence next to impossible to make a judgement of worth. But the words "unwinnable" and "quagmire" come to mind and no exit strategy is in sight ... so ? Recall that the Afgan war has lasted almost as long as WW1 and WW2 put together!

They were a couple of East African bands doing congolese-inspired stuff round about the early 80s. One was Orchestra Super Mazembe from Kenya and the other Orchestra Makassy from Tanzania. Seek 'em out if you can.
