Gato Loco de Bajo

Gato Loco is a NY-based band with three different incarnations. But all three play some variant of Afro-Cuban music filtered through an aggressively improvisational jazz lens, with classical and rock influences in the mix as well. The group recently released a debut CD, "Coconino," featuring its 12-piece psychotic-mambo-band look. Today (August 15) happens to be leader / sax player Stefan Zeniuk's birthday. So Gato Loco - in its "Low End" manifestation, a remarkably unique low frequency take on the music - will honor the occasion by playing live in our studios - before the big-band Gato Loco heads off to the Bowery Poetry Club, 308 Bowery on Wednesday August 18 for a more public celebration.

Super Negro Bantous: One Day Suffer Go Finish Favoriting / Super Negro Bantous / Decca
Nigerian guitar music heavily influenced by Congolese music ("Sweet Mother" by the late Prince Nico Mbarga is the most famous song of this type). Interestingly this music made it to Baranquilla, Colombia in the 70s and influenced the African-inspired champeta genre that emerged there - which has recently had a revival and is now influencing young Colombian bands. The worm turns...

Alick Macheso: Mundikumbuke Favoriting / Alick Macheso & Orchestra Mberikwazvo
